Corrupt Save Again

Post by FNG »

I just finished the early attack on the Stalin Line, got a DV and a Knight's Cross. Continued straight on to "The Making of a Tiger Ace". As I started the scenario, the error "Unable to load oobxx" appeared. I am running all the latest patches.

I've had this happen before when my machine crashed, which is fair enough. But to have this happen when the game appears to be running fine is extremely frustrating, especially when the game prevents you from saving a "spare copy" unless you create backups externally.

I am a huge SP fan, and I have the utmost respect for the work that Matrix Games have put in on SP and the MCs. BUT, this problem has been around for some time, and each time it has been reported, the response has been "it'll get better in the next patch".

If I didn't regularly check these forums and know about creating backups, I would have been back to square one. Again. I don't want to sound like a whiner, but I believe this issue should have been dealt with as a priority, as it seriously impairs the functionality of what is, after all, a commercial product.

Even if the save mechanism of the megacampaigns became an option rather than the default, it would be a start. I really like the idea of having to live with your results and not going back to re-fight a scenario when you know where the enemy is deployed, but when the software has a known problem like this, I think it is counter-productive.

This is all meant as constructive criticism and I hope it comes over as such.

I have just redone the scenario, got DV and Knight's Cross again, and get exactly the same error when starting "Making of a Tiger Ace".

Any suggestions as to what is going on?

Just to note: all patches installed, steel.prf deleted.

Hi FNG

can you please tell exact node/scenario number of last played scenario before the save game crash (to be found somewhere on the map)? What´s the time stamp of the LostVictories.dat and core.dat file?

You also may send me your last save game for further investigation at: harizan@web.de

Do you have scen136.dat in the Lost Victories folder? The latest patch included an upgrade to this scenario, which is the node "Making of A Tiger Ace"

Yes, I have that upgrade. Strange thing is, using the same backup I tried the Stalin Line Scenario one last time, got a DV again, got the Knight's Cross, and everything worked OK. Continued on to "Making of a Tiger Ace" and finished that too.

The only difference I can think of is that I completed the Stalin Line scenario in less than 20 turns...

Do you suppose this could have any bearing on this issue, or have I just been plagued by an obscure gremlin? I'll have a hunt around, but I think I may have overwritten the save that wasn't functioning properly.

I'm going to try The Stalin Line scen again just for the sake of my sanity and to see if it was an anomalous phenomena.

I'll keep you posted.

DV is less than 20 turns ????

How did you manage that ?

All I am able to achieve is surviving battles AND beria's firing squad.

I repeat my question : How did you manage that ?
