Bombur vs Lee, playtesting Bombur mod v0.5

Post by Bombur »

-Hopefully this will work now...why to play Bombur mod with so many versions of Nik mod v9.x....CHS+Nik mod and others??????[:D] Version 0.4 in the end was a much worsened version of NM 5.3....

Bombur mod

-This mod is built over Nik mod v5.3, without Nik´s work and the dramatic improvement he achieved in the WiTP engine, this mod wouldn´t be possible.
-This mod is to be played with PDU on.
Changes v0.3
1-Speed (both maximum and cruise) halved for all aircraft, in relation to stock values (not Nik mod values).
2-Mvr values halved for all aircraft, in relation to Nik mod v5.3 values
Purpose: preliminary testing suggests that it will decrease both A2A bloodiness, increase figther vs bomber effectiveness, and also result in a relative equalization between fighters. Zeroes are still better than Buffaloes and Corsair better than Zeroes but kill rates will decrease (hopefully)
3-Endurance doubled to restore normal range values
4-The Ki-61 now arrives at 01/43
5-The D4Y (both versions) now carries two 250kg bomb. The D4Y now is the D4Y2 and appears in 04/44. Both the D4Y1 and the Val will upgrade to this model.
11-Production of the B6N starts in 06/43
12-A new version for the D4Y was created. The D4Y1 uses slot 14, is rated as fighter bomber (as the plane was unfit for dive bombing), has no armor and 20% decreased dur (in an attempt to simulate the unreliable engines). It´s possible to upgrade the land based Vals to D4Y1 but it´s probably not a good idea. D4Y production starts in 01/43.
13-PT boats were significantly downgraded (for all nationalities). They have only one torpedo mount and only one torpedo anmo. While they are still lethal against barges, effectiveness against warship will be decreased. This should allow them to be used freely withouth house rules
15-Accuracy and effect for all AA weapons decreased by 20%, as the reduced mvr and speed make bombers too vulnerable to AA fire
Changes v0.4
1-Hong Kong fort level decreased to 2
2-Fortifications in Burma decreased to 0
3-Fortifications in Malaya decreased to 0
4-Fortifications in Phillipines decreased to 0
Purpose: In NM v5.x it´s possible to delay the Japanese advance for a long time, making their historical expansion very hard to achieve. We hope to fix this by decreasing forts in these critical areas.
5-D4Y2 now is the D4Y3, speed and endurance somewhat increased. Uses Mitsubishi engines instead of Aichi ones. The D4Y1 is again a dive bomber but the decrease in durability remains and it only appears in 05/43. It´s still impossible to upgrade CV squadrons to the D4Y before 04/44. The idea is to have two planes representing the inline versions of the D4Y and the much more reliable radial engine versions. To accomplish this I “deleted” the D4Y2 (a somewhat better version than the D4Y1 but still with the troublesome engines) and made the D4Y3 to appear earlier to allow some upgrade before 06/44 (historically the D4Y3 only appeared in the 2nd half of 1944). I´m uncertain to what extent this is a good solution, but it´s probable better than the one version in the stock scenario.
Changes v0.5
1-Hong Kong fort level increased again to 6
2-Accuracy levels for AA fire increased again to NM 5.3 levels (=stock). Effect levels are still 20% above NM 9.0 and 20% below NM 9.1. AA fire acc decrease gave disastrous results, as AA lethality decreased to almost zero
3-Durability for all dive bombers and torpedo bombers increased by 20%, as the decreased mvr makes AA fire too lethal for them even with the reduced accuracy of v0.4
4-Bataan forts increased to 4

First turn and the scenario seems to be working better. Attack on PH resulted in almost no damage to enemy ships. Few planes were lost (less than 10) but lots of Vals (78) and Kates (45) were damaged. A2A combat resulted in 31 enemy aircraft lost, against 5 Zeroes shot down over PH and Clark field. Three Japanese level bombers were lost, but, surprisingly, two enemy B-17´s were also shot down by ship based AA fire (do not remember how high they were flying-Nik noticed that cruising speed makes a lot of diference in AA vulnerability, and B-17´s have a pretty slow cruising speed). Wake didn´t fall...

Notice:

AA guns from slots 272 to 277 and 398 to 415 weren´t changed from NM 5.3
This implies some devices are still too lethal. In other words, I changed only effect for ship based flak. All land based flak has the normal NM 5.3 values, which is probably too lethal as speed for bombers decreased. Further playtesting will define to what extent these devices will need changes. It´s not completely bad to have two models of flak, as we could compare relative effects from both.

-Let me explain what I did with AA fire because it destroys my theory that decrease in acc screwed the AA system in v0.4. Such are the dangers of taking decisions based on limited testing.
1-When I halved spd and mvr to decrease A2A bloodiness I got increased AA losses (paralel runnings of Nik9.0 vs the changes I did to Nik 5.3). According to Nik, this happens because cruise speed for aircraft was halved
2-Then I decreased acc and effect for all AA devices. However, I didn´t notice that only ship AA guns were changed. Values for land based AA guns remain the same of Nik v5.3
3-As I had the impression that AA was too week and effect remained above Nik v9.0, I restores acc, again, only to ship flak.
4-As a result, values for land based flak are those of Nik v5.3 while those for ship based flak have effect 20% decreased as compared with Nik 5.3
5-Finally, I increased dur for dive bombers and torpedo bombers
6-I don´t know very well what the results will be....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/10/41

Nothing very exciting. Enemy air forces aren´t attempting any opposition to our disembarks in Malaya and The Phillipines. Some ships from the Asiatic fleet are attemting to flee from the Phillipines. The Ryujo TF is attempting to hunt them, but Ryujo´s small torpedo bomber air wing isn´t helping too much. An attempt to drive our forces back to the sea in Legaspi resulted in heavy losses to Phillipino troops.

-Allied forces are still unable to put significant opposition to naval and air forces from the Empire, but advance in land is slow due to logistical constraints. The allied air force in Phillipines seem to have been destroyed. Two more DD´s sunk in Pearl Harbor. Japanese forces are attempting to hunt enemy tankers fleeing from the Phillipines....even floatplanes are being used for this purpose but no hits were achieved.

Corrections to be made:

1-I was just wondering why my Jakes from the CS´s didn´t attack Lee ships. Trouble is that I halved their endurance instead of doubling it. As result, range decreased to 1...making them useless. I will take a lot of time converting all E13A´s to E7K´s, otherwise, no troubles......

The hunt for fleeing ships from the Asiatic ships going on. A small Japanese surface TF located one of those strange TF´s, including DD´s, PT´s and tranports. A DD was quickly sunk and another AS was sunk latter by the F1M2´s (the E13A1´s are now useless). The AS, however, fought back, inflicting moderate damage to one of our DD´s.....
The enemy air force is still refusing to fight. First base in the Phillipines fall

Honk Kong and Kavieng fell. The Japanese air force found significant air opposition over Manila, which was targeted after the effective neutralization of Clark Field. A raid of 62 Navy bombers escorted by 24 Zeroes was met by 18 P-40´s. One Zero, one G3M and one G4M were lost in exchange for one P-40 shot down and another two destroyed in the ground. However, 5 bombers were lost to A2A fire. Similarly, AA fire over Hong Kong destroyed two Ki-21´s. To some extent these are good news, as the A2A system seems to be working pretty well, kill ratio up to now is 5:1 for Japan (40x8) and 2 level bombers were lost in A2A combat. Still looking at flak losses. It´s possible they are too high, but data is very preliminary. In a few days, Japanese Army bombers will start to attack Singapore and then we will have better results.

IJNAF achieved a big victory today over Manila, as a large number of Zeroes engaged the P-40´s, shooting down 20 of them while the bombers destroyed another 7 in the ground. Three Zeroes were lost in A2A combat. This bloodiness is not unusual in NM v5.3 combats involving 100+ aircraft, but I never saw it in NM v9.x. On the good side, the P-40´s were able to fight back despite outnumbered 5:1 and despite the Zero bonus.

Numerical superiority again gave the victory to IJNAF over Manila. The allied air forces there are being decimated. Three combat rounds resulted in 4 Zeroes and 28 P-40 lost in the air. While these results seem to favor Japan too much it should be noticed that there was a clear relation between relative numbers of fighters and relative number of losses.
Here is the table:
Numbers ratio Kill ratio
Combat 1 1:1 1:1
Combat 2 5:1 6,6:1
Combat 3 5,5:1 7:0

-Two days ago, Japanese soldiers in Legaspi sent a strange message to their headquarters in Palau arguing that the enemy troops seemed to have vanished. The local commander, however, hesitated in ordering a assault before air recon. Air units confirmated the retreat and....Legaspi is ours.....
