Disappearing Aircraft

I have suspected for a while my a/c have been disappearing out of my air groups, now I am certain. I put in a raid into China with the AVG, numbering 54 planes at the time. I lost 8 but 11 were missing. OK FOW I thought. I transfered to a rear area, leaving a fragment in Yunan which were repairing. Down to 37. Two days later, still pulling the fragment out of Yunan and I am down to 32. That's 14 a/c missing in 3 days.

My AVG still fly P40B's and with a replacement rate of 5 that is 3 months of production disappeared into thin air. How the heck am I meant to rebuild it now [:@].

This problem doesn't seem to be limited to AVG, I am sure it is hitting my other air groups. I have also noted it with by B17's. It always seems to happen when I end up leaving a fragment behind.

I am using 1.806. Is anyone else seeing these problems.

The planes from fragments left behind are really slowly disappering in the same way as excess planes are. Supposed to go back to pool, but I think it is not 100% sure. Sometimes I found them in pool and sometimes not.

I've had that happen also.  rtrapasso believes (or heard) that they go back to the pool.  I too noticed it when there was a fragment left behind.  I'm not sure if the planes go back into the pool or not.

I noticed aircraft missing from squadrons that were freshly upgraded.  Example...
 
1.  Turn 1 - Convert Stranraer squadron to PBYs (so draw 12 PBYs from pool).
2.  Turn 2 - Squdaron would have about 6 active, and 6 damaged PBYs.  Transfer the active PBYs new base.
3.  Turn 3 - Parent squadron has 6 aircraft.  Squdron fragment will have about 3 active and no damaged aircraft (what happened to the other 3?).  When you re-combine the parent and fragment, you're still missing 3 planes (or so).  I ended up having to re-add aircraft to a squadron that had been upgraded (and in the back-field, so no threat of loss to enemy).

I've suspected this before (Gee, that squadron just upgraded, it should be at full strength, where'd they lose the planes?).  But I've only recently been carefully looking for it (PBYs are cheap after-all, but I'm not sure if they pilots are gone as well).  But if I'm losing fighters, that's going to be a problem.

Only planes dissappear. The pilots remains. And it happens only to fragments or excess planes.

Its on the list. The planes ooze out of the fragment. For now (this is just a workaround until it gets fixed) try not to split your airgroups (yes, I know, stop shouting). What I do is move a group by ship or by rail when I have to. Another tactic I use is to move an air unit, then upgrade it (this will draw in all the fragments) then re-upgrade it back to the old type if I need to. If its a plane type that I DO NOT want to lose.

On the plus side, SOME of the airplanes seem to make it back to the pool. Looks to be somewhere near 50%.

Do I understand correctly that upgrading the main air unit group will fill out the unit with the max number of the new type AC, and will dump all of the older type AC, from the main unit and any fragments, back into the pool? What happens to any pilots that are part of the fragments? Do they rejoin the main unit?

Yes, they are magicaly teleported to the main unit. For example you may have 5 pilots in Karachi, 5 Pilots in San Francisco and main unit in Sydney and when you upgrade (or downgrade) it, all those pilots will immedietly join the main unit.

In cases where i've had this happen (it was P-38s with me) - the planes tended to dribble in over a period of days - but i never could be sure if they ALL came back.
