Graphics challenge?

I just bought UFO, installed it and updated it. When I started to play, I noticed that many items don't display. When building base components, the list to the right has slots but no writing. When clicking on intercept, half of the transport shows but none of the fighters are visible. I have similar challenges with equipping troopers, transferring between bases, research, construction, etc.
Is there a fix for this? I have been looking forward to this game for a long time.

I did some playing in the settings menu and turning compressed textures off fixed the problem.
