On August 1st, 1914, citizens pack themselves into the town squares of capitals across Europe to hear the announcement that war has arrived. Emotions run at a fever pitch in London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna and St Petersburg. Hymns of praise and thanksgiving spontaneously arise from the masses. The chance of a heroic adventure, suppressed by decades of Victorian restraint, entice thousands of young men to enlist on the very first day. The first armies of the War to End All Wars constitute the largest volunteer army to ever fight in a major European conflict.
Each side predicts a swift victory. Every soldier envisages himself home by Christmas.

The lads will be home before the leaves fall, or at the absolute latest....Christmas.
Here's to a quick, decisive war to put the Kaiser in his place.

Liege gets it, Big Bertha blows it away, and then the infantry move in and it falls.
As the Kaiser's forces pour into Belgium artillery duels on the Alsace border.
On the Balkans front Belgrade resists the attempts of Oskar Potiorek to capture it, amazingly. That doesn't happen against the AI. [:D]. Though Scutari falls to the Multinational Empire.
The Russians lean hard on the Austrian border, as is there wont.

RE: Human vs human!
Potiorek begged the Emperor to lead the retributive strike against the Serb assassins after seeing the Archduke and his wife shot next to him! The Emperor has granted him his wish. Justice will be had!
...no doubt at the cost of many millions of lives.
RE: Human vs human!
Brussels and Ostend fall, the Schlieffen Plan is going well so far. British forces sighted in Lille just over the Franco-Belgian border.
Some playing around on the Eastern Front, an attempt to cut off my forces in Konigsberg is brought to naught!
Lodz is surrounded as the Kaiser's units march freely into western Poland. Every hex taken is a good thing, even if its a worthless hex.
The Serbian assassins are being subject to heavy shelling.

Belgian surrenders. A British corps in Lille is swept away by the Kaiser's forces. Will there be a repeat of the Marne or is France fubar?
In the East things are not so rosy, Danzig and Konigsberg fall, though the Kaiser's forces have escaped here with light damage.
Not so on the Western Front, where artillery duels and intensive combat is raging, or on the Balkans Front, where the dying General Putnik is being a pain in Austro-Hungarian arse. Nevertheless Belgrade falls. Serbia is small, and Austria is big (ish)!

Can't give screenies, for reasons of operational security. [:-]
Fog of war is very important to me in this one, its important he doesn't know where my reserves are, or how bruised (or not bruised) my front line is.
As for dates its only September-October 1914 atm!
A good naval phase this time. German battlecruisers and cruisers raid raiding in the North Sea don't find any transports, but they do find a Royal Navy destroyer force without the backing of any capital ships. The destroyers are punished by the big guns of Scheer's battlecruisers.
In the North Atlantic U-boats go to town on British transports, scoring a good half dozen hits.
On the Western Front Dunkirk falls, the extreme northern flank on the Western Front seems to be completely unguarded and German forces advance on Rouen. However, the Schlieffen plan meets its first real setback on the hex NE of Paris, where the latest assault is repelled with some casualties. The advance had outrun its artillery so no artillery support was available (sounds realistic!), though there weren't any French trenches either and the French didnt get away with it unscathed.
Artillery duels continue on the Alsace border. Hard to tell who is coming off worse here but probably me as he has 9 firepower to my 6 in this sector.
Casualties are currently
Triple Entente 909,000
Central Powers 675,000
with I'd guess 80% of those on the Western Front and 20% on the Serbian front.

I've taken some screenies of the situations on the various fronts, when I figure this can be released without any worries about opsec I'll put them up on here.
If France falls you can have my Western Front pic. [:'(]

RE: Human vs human!
The Schlieffen plan grinds on. Multiple German assaults on the Western Front between Rouen and Luxembourg are all successful. Rouen and Epernay falls to the Central Powers, Moltke's armies are the gates of Paris itself.
There's still fighting in Belgrade but the KuK army has almost completely destroyed the Serb army as far as I can tell.
The Russians build up in Danzig rather ominously, the weight of the Russian force seems to be aimed at Prussia. The Austrian border is quiet.
The Ottoman Empire is of course in play too now but the Caucasus Front seems quiet as well.

Last impulse of the September-October turn was very quiet. There was some consolidation by both sides and some fairly minor artillery firing but no offensives.
New strategic phase now, we're into November-December 1914, so both sides have had a chance to refit. Given last turns quiet they've both had a chance to get some readiness back as well, and French reserves seem to be moving up. Battle will no doubt be violently resumed very soon.
On the Western Front trench lines are going up on both sides but only level 1 trenches, so not a big deal. Paris has a bigass fort in it and is anchoring the northern limit of his line, beyond that he's got nothing deployed at all.
On the Eastern Front the Russians have reinforced Lodz which is almost completely surrounded. This does however mean that, while I surround his forces in Lodz, some of my forces are surrounded by his troops in Warsaw as well. [:D] He probed a bit at the Austrian line last turn with cavalry but was rebuffed in all areas. The Austrians on the border have started digging in as well. Not so, the Russians.

RE: Human vs human!
All quiet on the Western Front.
I hope I'm not making a mistake here but its gone very quiet on the West. German troops are poised one hex from Paris, but in my estimation the winds augur badly at present so there have been no more assaults. Still, calm before the storm, I am sure. [:D]
The Eastern Front has gone kinda quiet too. His forces in Lodz have now been completely cut off, they must be out of supply. He holds Danzig with very large forces, I guess he's making a beeline for Berlin, but I suspect the lack of HQ activations is holding him up. My German units here continue to dance around him, and continue to snatch the odd Polish hex where they can, but are not really managing to stem the flood.
Still fighting in Belgrade! Long battle. But the Serbs are down to the last few... the KuK army will get redeployed from the Balkans fairly soon I feel. [:D]

Oo, I think I delayed too long.
Big strikes hit Paris and Epernay. The two sides are about equal, so needless to say no progress is made. Both sides are handled quite roughly. The French defence has certainly stiffened here.
On the Alsace border I decide to make a nudge forward and this is more successful - shame its less important, really!
In the East static warfare reigns still.

RE: Human vs human!
We're into March 1915 now.
The interesting part is still the Western Front.
A new surprise is broken out for the pleasure of the Entente. Chlorine gas is released on the defenders of Paris, and along with a pounding from siege artillery, the city falls to the Kaiser! Losses were significant even with the gas and the artillery. The situation for France is far from over though. British forces are beginning to arrive in reasonable numbers now and are propping up the French northern flank.
Rouen has been bloodlessly trading hands back and forth, as Paris falls Rouen falls to me as well.
Aerial reconnaissance reveals many French corps have been mauled quite badly and are in some cases well below maximum strength at the beginning of a strategic turn - France is feeling the pressure alright! Morale remains Good, however.
Another issue for me is that Italy will be joining the war on the Entente side very soon. Fortunately the last Serb city fell to me this turn so thats not so bad.

You can read a much more detailed AAR, with screenies and my secret thoughts, here :-

Blackhorse agreed not to look at that one.
Anyway, theres still fighting in Paris but I'm winning. Verdun resisted an attack backed by gas but suffered terrible losses in doing so, the attacking Germans barely lost anything on the other hand, so thats really a loss for the French. Epernay and Rouen now have considerable garrisons and so are now much more firmly mine.
Still pockets of resistance in Serbia, I'm preparing to eliminate them though and finally knock the Serbs out of the war.
Ottoman forces enter Egypt.
On the Eastern Front the Russian juggernaut is at the gates of Posen now.

RE: Human vs human!
The game is getting /really/ tense.
France is clinging on by a fingernail. Everything from Rouen to Dijon is now in the hands of the Central Powers - except Paris.
And Paris has fallen at least once (might have been twice!). There have been at least four huge battles there now which have devoured vast numbes of lives.
The BEF are starting to show up in force though. I have no idea if France is going to fall or not.
Meanwhile on the Eastern Front the Russian steamroller is getting near Berlin. In a strange turnabout from the usual state of affairs the Austrians are going on the offensive, pushing up from Galicia towards Lodz and eastwards, straightening the front line in Austrian territory itself.
Trent falls to the Italians to my great surprise - they managed to take the town despite having less firepower than me. A lucky roll, I guess.

RE: Human vs human!
Wow ! The last thing you need now is a broken front in the Alps although the Brits will be in France so Italy will lack some real offensive punch.
What is France's condition ?
Any numbers on casualties ?
Looks like you have a very tense game going there. Will France crumble soon enough for the Kaiser to be able to rail troops to the east to stop the Russian steamroller ?
Send us some pictures please [;)]

RE: Human vs human!
Casualties stand at about 3.5 million for the Central Powers and 4.5 million for the Entente. I'd guess 3.5 million of those are French, but thats only a guess.
Assault after assault hits Paris, that hex has seen combat from April 1915 all the way through to the current date, October. It's switched hands several times but in general the Entente manages to hold it - just. Will France manage to hold? It is crunch time, I've never seen a game so on a knife edge, I really have no idea who will win this.
I'm not only attacking Paris though, two French counters have been cut off near Verdun. Entente assaults to try and break them out have been repulsed so far.
There aren't all that many trenches dug so far on the Western Front, both sides are hurling their forces against each other rather than digging in, but the frontline nevertheless is now static, it wavers from one to the other every so often but neither side is making any real progress.
The Italian Front has gone a bit quiet, I imagine HQ units are being brought up. Its hard to get over the Alps anyway.
On the Eastern Front Posen was surrounded by the Russians trapping a German corps, but a counteroffensive out of Berlin has forced back the encirclers. Galicia is the most heavily entrenched sector of this game, theres no motion there at all, but the Austrians are forcing northwards towards Lodz.

For operational security reasons I'm not showing any up to date pictures here (Blackhorse is reading this board too after all) but here are some early pix of the assaults into France.
Approaching Paris... this is before German attentions turned to the Alsace border. The front line hasnt moved a whole lot since then, the Alsace front has moved two hexes west, and the line has been extended up to the sea through Rouen, thats it.

Prussia was empty with all the Germans on the Western Front...

...but Galicia did not prove to be easy pickings for the Tsar.
