Newb question

Post by cdbeck »

Without looking like a huge newb, can I ask what the difference between H3:ANW and the unreleased Commander edition is?

This is a very contentious issue to say the least.  We used to be able to say, try both demos, without demos we're back to a very contentious issue.  Anyway, here is a recent thread http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1516772

HCE derives from the original DOS/Amiga computer Harpoon game (often called Harpoon Classic).

ANW derives from Harpoon 2 (why some of us called ANW Harpoon3/H3).

Geez, that is very wierd. So, Harpoon CE is an update of Harpoon Classic 97 (Gamespot.com has a demo still)? Why did the old demos get removed, if I may ask? Anyway, both look very different and I guess I will have to do some reading on this.

ANW is multiplayer. Interface looks very old fashioned but is actually a very complex sim under the skin.

Commanders Edition isn't MP, has a much prettier interface but is simplified "under the skin".

Ah, well simplified is best for me I guess. I managed to rustle up both of the old version demos, so I can try that out. I guess it would be heresy to ask if H:CE will be forthcoming any time soon? [:'(]

I can see you like to pick on sore spots :), HCE is 95% waiting on Matrix, the game is about as done as it is going to be, just swapping manual revisions with Matrix at present. Then I suppose it will take another month for Matrix to press CDs and do all of those other release things they do. So I guess there isn't really any reasonably reliable answer to your question until the manual is finished.

November, november...... [:'(]  .....got a great big plie O tidlywinks riding on it......[:D]

Hey SoM, which is better?   ...... neither....   both can be great and both can really give you the.... you know....  I have owned both versions since dot, same with the paper rules.  For me I find the olden style 'classic' gameplay generalises (for want of a better word) with the detail and lends itself to big games and does it brilliantly with a really easy to use interface.  The latter version, II/3/ANW packs that detail in and gives a fantastic small scale game, very similar in some respects to the paper rules but without the calculator, pity about the old dos-ish interface [8|] .
It had been close on 8 years since I had played the electronic versions of Harpoon and after reacquainting myself afresh, albeit forewarned [;)]  it would seem silly....... no, make that pointless to say that one is better than the other, they do what they do..... apples oranges blonde brunette redhead......? Its all good!

He he he why not get all three for that full Harpoon experience [:D], 3x 3x 3x 3x ........ yeah paper too. Apparently its character building trying to work out how many refuellers are required for a strike on Port Stanly airfield from the ol country, with the correct where and whens, all to finally get to push one model over a mock up airfield at one oclock in the morning, in a drafty ol timey wargamers shed, for a near miss with half a crate of hand grenades[:D]

Classic is a great introduction to Harpoon, I must admit.

My real "intro" was to referee a boardgame (H2 rules, IIRC). Just an OH Perry Vs a Kilo, very simple. The OH P completely failed to spot the sub and the first facility lost was the sonar room... fate and flukey dice rolls!

It took 4 hours of real time and that's when I thought "This would be so much better done on a computer".
