Damaged Aircraft in CHS
Hey all.
Im in april 42 in a full extended map chs campaign and the fight for Port Moresby is in full swing.
It has a size 5 airfield with 251 planes based there so it should be able to support these. There are loads of engineers and plenty of aviation support.
However, all my fighters are set to 90% cap but only around 10% of the fighters seem to be ready at any time. The rest of the squadrons are always damaged. Losses and damages from air combat and bombing are relatively light. I have tried setting them to 50% cap but the same number seem to stay damaged.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
Exactly how much AV support do you have on the field?
Is the field being bombed/shelled ?
How many supplies doe you have there?.
Is there a lot of air combat taking place?
Remember that planes get damaged from landing on damaged airfields and damaged airfield facilities will greatly increase repair time....

If you are playing the older NIKMOD of CHS, there is a problem with fighters (and some other aircraft) repairing... this was supposed to have been fixed with the newer NIKMOD, but since it was a database change that fixed it, you can't upgrade to it.
RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
One must continue to check pilot morale as important as mechanics.
The local support needs are not just the number of mechanics, ya' know?
Do you have a leader unit(HQ) present?
Are enemy planes coming at an altitude your planes are not set to intercept??

Well, first off 251 planes from a level 5 field means you are overloaded and have problems with that right off. Air commanders admin rating plays a part as well.
And as others have said damage to the field and AV support are also factors. Also keep in mind that some planes are repaired but others may be damaged during the turn (dont assume the combat reports are 100% accurate, they arent) that may equal each other out. Lots of factors involved.

The mod uses Nikmod version 8.0 which is flawed as it raised fighter durability levels too high, as a side effect it greatly increases the number of damaged a/c. No work around so pretty much a game killer i'm afraid to say........

Scenario 157b was supposed to fix this. I see scenario 157c on AB's website now but I do not know what the difference between b and c version is. If you have the original {157} you would have to start over with the new scenario. No way to upgrade a game in progress.
RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
yes that is a bit of a killer.
There is 350 av support. Checked unit leaders, all fine. There are 200 planes based there. It is a level 5 airfield. Plenty of supplies. No runway or service damage. Will try an air HQ there (or will a land HQ help as well??). Looks like it is down to the mod though.

Yep...killed my game about the time the problem was discovered. I'm running 157b now and it is working fine {MAR 1942} but the problems never really showed up till later.

I'm Lyceum's opponent and don't see this problem elsewhere in the game. the air attacks on Port Moresby have been slowly increasing in numbers for some time and raging for at least a week ( lost track of the precise number of days ) I'm using Lae and Rabaul to launch raids, a average of two sometimes three attacks each day, each one of approx 100 aircraft, however sometimes the weather restricts this to one. I'm using cap to escort convoys elsewhere and this "damages" aircraft but a few day's rest works wonders. How long can a squadron keep up a 90% cap ?.

RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
I'm having a similar problem with CHS and Nikmod 9.0b, using scenario 158. Some of my bases (enough supplies and aviation support) are having problems to get ready my aircraft. Some of my squadrons get some damage after doing CAP or training program, without entering in combat.
Here and there some of my squadrons get damage without a clear explanation for that. Buffalos for example and Warhawks get damage very easily only doing a 60% CAP or training missions (without any kind of combat against jap squadrons).
Any idea? It's normal?

I believe that it's operational damage. The planes aren't performing "missions" as far as the game counts them, but they are flying and taking damage from wear.
fair winds,

We encountered the same problem in scenario 159.

RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
I'm playing CHS with Nikmod (map Extended), scenario 158. But I see now that there is a new version of the scenario: 158"c", 2.08"c". What's the difference between 158 and 158"C"? What are the changes in the new version? Could be that in scenario 158 had the problem with the low ENDURANCE aircraft that affected the old Nikmod 8.0 version and the new 158"c" have this problem fixed?.

RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
variable (low) repair rates for certain airgroups has always been present. As of yet there's no explanation why. Nikmod 8.0 version brought it out to a much greater degree than stock. The latest version (scn 158) uses Nikmod 9.0 standards and should restore former playability as seen in pre-8.0 versions. Scn 159 is the experimental CHS version. Loosely based on Nikmod but using different formulae.

RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
So what you're saying is that scenario 158 is fine, isn't it? Or are you saying that only 158 "C" version is fine? We're a lot of people playing version 158 (an old version, no the latest version "C") and would like to know if this is ok or has the problem we're talking in this thread.

RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
The current version of CHS + Nik a2a is fine as it uses 9.0 standards. This version is on Andrew's website for download. These are scen's 157 and 158 2.08c
Earlier versions use the obsolete version of Nikmod a2a and will be more prone to the damaged aircraft bug. (which is intermittant and won't affect all airgroups)
I don't recall how Andrew designated the old version (i assume it was probably 2.08 or 2.08b) You can tell in-game by examining fighter aircraft. If using the old version the DUR values will be double that of stock so a P38 for example will have a value of 100+

RE: Damaged Aircraft in CHS
Hi Nik.
Just a few quick questions if thats ok...
1) Would you recommend the b or standard versions of your mod? I understand japanese industry is altered but im not sure for the better!
2) When does the 42 scenario of your mod exactly start, Coral Sea?
3) Does your mod use Andrew Brown's Extended map and CHS?
4) I have Witp 1.804, would you recommend upgrading to 1.806 or does it not matter?
With my current game looking like it could be fubar due to the posted problems your mod may be a viable alternative, especially the 42 one.
Many thanks,
Tom.
