No Amph movement though contested sea zones?

Post by ulver »

Playing against the evil mastermind once again I went for a Weltmach order Vernichtung strategy and sotied the German fleet into the North Sea and the North Atlantic – the plan was to invade behind the lines in France and make the British player so paranoid about a possible 1914 sea lion that he kept the BEF home.

The result is that Both the North Sea and the North Atlantic are contested – both sides have plenty of Amp in the sea zones but in the orders phase neither are allowed any sea transport? Is this intentional? Make sense I supposed but can you confirm it is meant to work like that?

Yes, you have to control the sea zone.

Hmm how is contested versus control determined then ?

I mean will a single German DD on raid mission in the North Sea suffice to prevent Britain form getting control of that sea area possibly denying ferrying BEF to France ?

What if control is "-"?  (ie nobody has ships in the zone)

So just to clarify: You need control for troop transport but contested is sufficient to allow shipping resources or do you need control for that as well? Would be pretty rough on the UK if Germany can cut of her resources with an aggressive cruiser campange in the North Atlantic – I realise that will eventually kill the German fleet but sacrificing it to prevent transport of the BEF for some turns AND badly disrupt the UK economy seems a god trade.

I agree with hjaco, this is proving a problem in our latest game. I've sunk 3 German DN's in the North Sea but because the AI doesn't fire on the little ships (CA, DD) he still has the North Sea contested and I can't move troops to northern France/Belgium.

Why is all the naval combats simultaneous? It seems to be causing some of the problems. If "rounds" of combat were fought and ships hit "retired" to port before the next round started you wouldn't have ships continually targeted even though they have already been sunk and the smaller ships would eventually get targeted and have to flee home. The surviving larger fleet would have a better chance of controlling the sea. As the fights all take place together only a few ships suffer losses and significant losses at that nothing that is going to be repaired in a few months and you end up with small ships contesting a sea area over dreadnaughts? Control means a side has a 3:1 superiority.  And no, 3 DDs don't get superiority against 1 DN.
The points in each sea zone are added based on type.  DN=10, BC=8, PD=5, CA=3, DD=1

If you have a 3:1 superiority you're considered to be in control of the zone and you can carry out amphibious operations.

In the case of no ships from either side being in the zone, you wouldn't count as having control for amphibious purposes
So just to clarify: You need control for troop transport but contested is sufficient to allow shipping resources or do you need control for that as well?

Regular shipping can happen in contested zones, or even zones with no warships at all, as long as the transports themselves aren't sunk.

Sacrificing the German fleet to prevent the BEF being landed in France is certainly an option.

If they're garrisoned then yuo stand a good chance of your invading units being completely wiped out!!

SMK is right, if attacking a garrisoned port there is a high probability of being wiped out.  Dieppe minus the successful parts.
