It's on their FTP.

Perhaps you should just wait for the announcement, I'm sure it will be posted soon enough.

My initial impression is quite favourable; I love this randomization stuff. Of course, the IJN handed me my @$$ as usual.

Only took a peek at the changes in the editor and I must say it looks much more polished now.

Thanks SSG folks for the patch.

Edit: User made scenarios actually work now! No more crash to desktop! Good Stuff.

I reinstalled the game, patched it to version 1.01, and then fired up the Midway scenario.

Apart from the OBVIOUS problem with the B17D squadron still being included the OOB, things went smoothly enough through about 1400hrs. I had sunk three CV and one CVL during the morning, but had lost the Hornet and Enterprise. And while the Yorktown was undamaged and filled with a/c, I was unsure as to the state of the Hiryu. I ordered an all-out strike against sighting Charlie, and waited. The clock ticked along, and I waited. Eventually, as dusk approached, I checked the carrier-screen, and, sure enough, the strike was stuck in the forming-up box. It never left the Yorktown's hex.

I exited CaW, and uninstalled it. I bought the game so that I could play competitively against friends, something that's simply not a viable option in it's current state. Likewise, I don't much care to spend my time looking for bugs; my playtesting days are over.

I thank SSG for the patch.

I only did some quick testing of v1.01 last night. Two comments:

(1) The problems previously reported about the cloud layer being mouse grabbable and moveable if a zoom level of greater than 5X is used still exist. I believe extensive reports of this can be found in the tech support forum from the first two weeks following the game's release.

(2) I observed that it is possible for the user to get himself into a very confused state with the order pop-ups if one downsizes the games video resolution and had previously locked these pop-ups into place. Basically, if the pop-ups were locked into a location which then becomes beyond the drawable boundaries of the new resolution, then pop-ups become corrupted and inaccessible. It would probably be a good idea in the code to clear locked/pinned pop-up window state whenever the player changes the resolution setting.

This patch seems a good first step and I hope SSG will continue to clean up problems and polish the code base. There is a lot of potential here. However, like most major new coding efforts, it's hard to get everything perfect on the initial released. Well, I hope to see this game realize its full potential. I have recently been looking at Harpoon and this game fills a nice niche between the arcarde and hardcore extremes for naval warfare. A very nice UI with a relatively easy learning curve. So, keep at it, SSG! Thanks.

I think you're being too harsh. Way too harsh. CaW has a couple of bugs; yes; but you can actually PLAY it. Something that was not possible for TWO YEARS with HPS' Point of Attack 2.

Yes, I admit I was one of the suckers who paid $60 for it on release day, and then ended up having to wait two years to get it to a point where it was relatively stable.

Ryan,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears as though one of your principal interests in CaW is as a modder. For you, this game may well be a treasure-trove of possibilities. I understand that, and more power to you.

For me, however, as a competitive gamer, it's worthless in it's present state. Not one of the friends with whom I play is gonna devote a moments time to this game, the outcome of which is routinely determined by a bug, in this case, the already documented "forming-up" bug.

So no, from my perspective, I'm not being harsh at all.

Thanks for you comments, [:)]

I, for one, won't patch/reinstall before let's say 1 or 2 additional patches.

It's interesting to see the different comments about the patch though, and I do notice a different tone, hehe. [:D]

Like MarkShot, adding comments with him even listing things that haven't been addressed yet (or overlooked?), in a polite manner.... *whisper* maybe a bit too polite? [;)] It's not our job to do the Beta/patch test, I'd say.
Wait, I did the retail Beta test for CAW already, silly me..... but I will refrain from testing the patch(es).

Then POE, who frankly says that he uninstalled CAW, for reasons everyone knows... and he sounds a bit pissed off now. hehe

Btw, I wonder when Oleg will jump in..... [8D][;)]

LOL yes I am watching to see if the patch will rekindle the interest in CaW or the people already moved on, as I assume most did. I uninstalled the game couple weeks ago, could not stand the CaW icon staring in my face from the desktop laughing "haha you paid 50 bucks for me m0r0n, and played me for like 4 days or something, haha". Or at least that's what I imagined the icon said. Some people say game icons can't talk but I say don't trust them - CaW icon laughed at me! [:D]

I might reinstall to try 1.01, some improvements seem pretty important, but they might be a buck short and a day late. One might wonder why they weren't included in the original release, as they seem pretty much obvious to anyone who played CaW for couple hours.

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been learning H3 both the 3.8.0 ANW (Matrix version) and 3.6.3 AGSI (last pre-Matrix version). A very complex game/system with a UI only a software engineering historian could love.

I had once criticized CCAW/CAW for lacking depth. Well, H3 is the total opposite end of the spectrum. I have yet to play an actual game; still learning.

Both CAW's window interface and CCAW's DOS interface are much more intuitive than H3. Both only took me a day or so to get going with. I really like the concept and would just like to see a little more meat (technical depth). I think with a little more modeling of real world complexities there would also come the depth and richness of strategy that would make the game more rewarding to play.

As a final comment, I try to always be polite (even if I didn't have a relationship with Matrix or wasn't myself in the software field; it would be thus). What is there to be gained by being hostile or insulting? As others have aptly pointed out, simply not spending future entainment dollars on this developer or this publisher will do infinitely more harm than being nasty in what you say or how you say it. So, there is no need to zing it to anyone here even if you are not pleased with the initial game or the patch just released.

My experience may be colored by POA2.

Link to graphic showing how many "patches" there were to Point of Attack 2

And the damn "C++ Exception" bug STILL isn't fixed. [:@] It's mostly been squashed, but every once in a while, I get it when I try to play POA2 with the latest beta patch.

Hiya Ryan,

There are a number of developers and/or publishers from whom I won't purchase a game, among them HPS and Storm Eagle Studios. The (local) management has asked me to leave it alone, so I won't elaborate. The truth is, however, that I'm perilously close to expanding my list of "don't buy at any price" recommendations, rather substantially.

And please don't take my allusions to your creative abilities as any sort of slight or put-down, as it wasn't meant as any such thing. I readily acknowledge that folks can, and will, relate to games such as CaW in completely different manners, depending on their expectations and how they intend to use the software.

Thanks again,

... I had once criticized CCAW/CAW for lacking depth. Well, H3 is the total opposite end of the spectrum. I have yet to play an actual game; still learning ...

Here's the philosophical problem that all software developers have: make the game easy enough to play so as to appeal to a much broader audience -- including the so-called "casual gamer" -- or give it a grognard's depth and hope it holds their attention span long enough to get beyond a steep learning curve.

As I just downloaded the latest C@W patch, I have only tried the Midway scenario; the delayed combat animation display has certainly improved the game -- how the "betas" missed this obvious oversight is still a mystery to me -- but I have yet to go thru the Coral Sea variants, or see what happens when my CVs launch under cloud/storm cover.

I don't seem to have problems launching planes -- possibly because I always use the screen interface -- but now I will check my flight decks more frequently to see what is really going on.

However, it's way too soon to uninstall this game, no matter what the icon is telling you! C@W's AI is still good, and more scenarios -- possibly an Atlantic theater of Ops -- could justify SSG's purchase price.

Have you noticed the new variants and random option in the patch? That significantly extends replayability IMHO.

This will never be a game to play for months on end but the patch looks good and I thank the developers for the suspense option. If a few of the above points are addressed in a future patch the game should provide decent enough entertainment for a month or two I think.

Cheers, Chris

There's a problem w/the TG nominated speed button in all the Coral Sea variants. See my post in the CaW support section topside.
