Well Sid there is or was an Allied plane in RHS that has bombs and torpedoes both in its basic load-out. I and I think one other player saw combat reports where that plane used both in the same attack, so we know it works. This was a few versions ago - I think you modified it since then so that now some squadrons have bombs and some torpedoes, but none have both at the same time. I think its the B-26A.

Was it a single unit attack?

I must admit I did not test for this possibility - because a G4M could not carry any bombs if it had a torpedo in the bay - covering - using actually - the bomb mounting points. Nor can I think of any aircraft ever to use both at the same time.
But it may be revealing what is happening. This is very confusing to try to work out - but I guess I just assumed if it ignored the number of torpedoes it was ignoring the loadout. Maybe a torpedo attack is hard wired at one - but that does not prevent looking at other weapons?

We could test and figure that out - but to what end? What plane should be using bombs and torpedoes at the same time?

Nope. All units. Its not confusing to work out at all. Some modders have been adding bomb devices to aircraft that carry a torpedo as it's main armament. I assume the reasoning behind it was to allow the bomber to be able to attack land bases with a more effective and/or historical bomb loadout than the hard coded routine allows when the default weapon is a torpedo. It was probably assumed/hoped that the routine would differentiate between loadouts when set to Naval attack and Port/Airfield/Ground attack. It doesn't where naval attack is concerned. The modified bomber will attack naval targets with all the devices listed in it's loadout.

As I mentioned, this has already been seen to work in game.

If your intention is to have the bomber drop both torpedoes and bombs on a ship in the same attack run, then yes, it "works". However I don't think thats the original intention. A 2E or 1E is usually equipped with either a clutch of bombs or a torpedo (or two torpedoes in rare cases) The attack routines can only resolve 1 air attack run per aircraft so if you equip a 2E for example with both a bomb and a torpedo you are in effect, creating a super-bomber within the game framework.

I tend to agree with Nik - I am very concerned this is a super bomber not modeling anything IRL. On the other hand, if the concern was for the way code substitutes bombs for torpedoes for land targets - I think it is somewhat legitimate. I believe the RHS alternate loadout scheme is a better solution: players may assign a unit with GP bombs for a land target - and AP bombs or torpedoes for a naval target. I don't like this very much - because obviously a unit can switch loads - but there are so many units - and in RHS we try to give you squadrons - to insure you get lots of deployment options.

While the B-26A does not have both bombs and torpedoes in RHS - it carries 500 pound bombs normally and some units carry a torpedo instead (which defaults to 500 pound bombs - just not enough of them - for land targets) -

there is a Japanese plane that has both! Only found in EOS and AIO - this is the G5N4 - not in its standard form - which only has 250 kg bombs - but in its TORP form - some units carry a torpedo and two 800 kg bombs for anti-shipping work to normal range - or two 250 kg bombs and 1 800 kg bomb to extended range (if code works as I think it does).

Yes, of course. I thought you were actually asking 'does it use both if you give it both?', so that's what I answered.

1) Can a Fighter Bomber be given a Torpedo and then use it (like a level bomber will), or will it simply swoop/dive bomb using the default 500lb/250KG bombs?

I did not see a positive answer to this.

Yes. My F7Fs attack with torpedoes.

I had the impression (that is I assumed) only level bombers and torpedo bombers would use torpedoes - but I never tested fighters. I do know that patrol planes NEVER use them - which is why I took them off in RHS. I prefer the CHS way - with torpedoes - but they never work. But it may be the fighter type was included specifically for the F7F case. I think we did test dive bombers - and they don't use em.

I ran a couple of more tests.

It appears that fighters will not attack with torpedoes. If armed with torpedoes they will attack with bombs. It looks as if my first tests did not include fighters.

Fighter bombers will attack with torpedoes.

Dive bombers will attack with torpedoes. I found this out a long time ago when I added the AD to my scenario. I tried it as a torpedo bomber, dive bomber and level bomber. I ended up making it a level bomber.
