First of all, the West need only be static if players, especially the CP, choose not to make that front a priority. For instance. the Germans could do what Schieflin originally wanted and put EVERYTHING through Belgium. By the same token, players can reverse the 1915- 1917 strategy of "Hold Fast and Beat up on the Russians" to move troops west.

Secondly, we should get over the Anglo-French view that the West was THE front. The Germans actually had it on the second burner after the Race to the Sea until 1918.

Good points
It looks ok

I am playing a lot of WITP I assume i will get the feeling of the grand scale without the possible micromanagement ?

the front will only be static if armys of almost equal size with enough reserves clash. this can happen in the west, but it does not have to. especially in the east a lot of different scenarios are possible.

there isn't that much of micromanagement in the game though. I have played only little WITP but the detail level is completely different.

I thought the same thing but took a chance with this game, and so far glad i did.

After playing around a little bit to learn the game, i decided to try the 1914 scenerio as the CP. Its a short 3 turn game and i wanted to see how close to Paris i could get by deception (attack) of the West's southern front with the real goal to launch thru Luxumberg after the AI took the bait. It turned out to be a suspenseful chess game all the way to the last impulse.

To make a long story short, i made it to Paris's boader with one turn to go and my troops were exhausted and low on strenght. I kept the russian advance slowed down by placing more troops to the East in the initial setup phase and it worked. I left Belguim alone, etc. One last push into Paris and my HQ's were out of offensives, the city was destroyed but the French recovered from the deception and at the last impulse reinforced Paris and created a stalemate there. I was on my seat, thinking i made it and would have victory, but NO [:@] i lost by a couple of points. My theater wide losses were too great even though i got to Paris. So, i made it to Paris and i won on my terms[;)]

give it a try.

Each impluse of the turns was deep in thought. Good chess game. There was many decisions to make and i only covered some above.

I too had played mainly WWII games and was concerned about the excitement of "trench" warfare. I have played 2 full campaigns, one from each side. The game is on a very grand scale, without micromanagement, and trenches are but a small aspect. In both campaigns I was able to cut off a number of corp in encirclements and leave them to whither. The many choices and decisions are very engrossing and I find myself saying, "just one more turn..."

Tombo,
Quick note. In case you didn't realize, the 1914 scenario goes all the way to 1919 if you so choose. Simply hit continue when the vitory screen appears at teh end of 1914. It's actually the logest scenario of all. This aplies to all scenarios, btw.
