RE: 43 - The Mouse bites back. Rob vs Littlejoe 43+
Douuble update today , as not much major happening.
Well the IWO attack didnt go as i planned, more like as Aztez predicted [;)].
Ground combat at Iwo Jima
Allied Deliberate attack
Attacking force 62696 troops, 721 guns, 102 vehicles, Assault Value = 1592
Defending force 73746 troops, 632 guns, 11 vehicles, Assault Value = 1034
Allied max assault: 1450 - adjusted assault: 958
Japanese max defense: 807 - adjusted defense: 2095
Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 6)
Japanese ground losses:
1014 casualties reported
Guns lost 12
Vehicles lost 1
Allied ground losses:
896 casualties reported
Guns lost 46
Vehicles lost 2
And its still at fort level 6 ? , hope we dont have the sync bug, or else my air attacks havnt been very effective at stopping
the japanese engineers rebuild.
Subs as usual provide the best attacks over the days, japans home islands are really not a safe place for japanese shipping
and we bagged a CL near Kure.
Sub attack near Hiroshima/Kure at 60,41
Japanese Ships
CL Naka, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Suzukaze
DD Fujinami
DD Susuzuki
Allied Ships
SS Darter
And another bite out of the brigade loading/unloading at legaspi
AP Teiun Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
Allied Ships
SS Guavina
Japanese ground losses:
63 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Sub attack near Osaka/Kobe at 63,42
Japanese Ships
MSW Senyu Maru #2, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
Allied Ships
SS Flasher
DD too
Sub attack at 65,45 SE of Tokyo.
Japanese Ships
DD Inazuma, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Harusame
DD Hokaze
DD Akizuki
Allied Ships
SS Paddle, hits 1
Sub attack near Saigon at 31,46
Japanese Ships
AK Nitimei Maru, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
Allied Ships
SS Storm
Haddock took a battering in exchange though. (back to Pearl after the flooding subsides)
Sub attack at 53,43
Japanese Ships
DD Arare
DD Kasasagi
DD Yuzuki
DD Ariake
Allied Ships
SS Haddock, hits 4, on fire
Shortlands fall immediately to a shock attack and with only 2 base forces there we encountered little resisitance.
Time to ship in the seebees [;)]
Ground combat at Shortlands
Allied Shock attack
Attacking force 13408 troops, 152 guns, 54 vehicles, Assault Value = 305
Defending force 480 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2
Allied max assault: 580 - adjusted assault: 254
Japanese max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1
Allied assault odds: 254 to 1 (fort level 0)
Allied forces CAPTURE Shortlands base !!!
Japanese ground losses:
3408 casualties reported
Some disturbing reports off of Iwo Jima on the last day, one jap AK hammered with 10 1000lb bombs sinks rapidly.
But there appears to be a swarm of single ships only 60 miles away from IWO. Unless he has surface forces escorting them
a CA/CL and 3 destroyers peeled off from the Franklins escorts and will hopefully keep the enemy away from landing
next turn. IF he has CV support this could get v v ugly vv fast as the allies only have limited CV's here.
Betties from singapore badly disable another AK returning from Sumatra and allied efforts to close the base seem to have
been less than effective, although there was a nice tally of enemy fighters which our luvverly Mk8 Spitfires ate for lunch.
Day Air attack on Singapore , at 23,50
Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 1
A6M5 Zeke x 4
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 8
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 11

A6M5 Zeke: 1 destroyed
Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 4 destroyed

H8K Emily: 1 destroyed
Japanese ground losses:

Runway hits 55
Downed over 40 yesterday too, but no bombers hit in either raid.
Bye Bye

Ammo is still fine with the exception of DD torpedoes so we will remain on station and send in a Battleship bombardment group
to liven the place up a bit [;)]. With 6 BB's and many CA's on escort duty for CV Groups we can create a hopefully ner endless
stream of heavy shelling TF's to add to the presure.
Singapore gets visited again with similar results. It seems that if i don't send in overwhelming numbers then japan
might still put up a fight. Which i actually want as atrittion is my friend, and i love Spits.

silent service
We will shock attack the single NLF unit in north Java tomorrow and send in a LOT of engineers who have been sailing up from
the SW Pacific where there are already enough Engineers to last till doomsday.
IWO is proving a tougher nut to crack than anticipated, lets turn up the heat a bit over the next week. As the only HQ i can find
in the centpacific is Cent Pac HQ itself , its going to IWO. while i move out the 2 combat HQ's i'd forgotten about basking

[:D] ..those HQ troops are propably sun burned after living in Canton Island for 2 years! [:D]
At least you found them... IF not we might have another TV series called Lost II! [:(]
As for the game I think you are correct by bringing in reinforcements into iwo Jima. Keep on bombing him daily and you shall prevail sooner than later.

vs the 75 mm of the other CA's , darn penetration threshold , must be some big guns on iwo.

Been a while since update. 2 reasons really 1) been away and 2) not much happening

Seems i forgot to turn off escort bombard but given whats been firing back previously this is very light damage, the DD
will get home fine. Also i 'think' finally iwo is supply low an exploration by the denuded tanks of the 1st USMC amphib
tank unit will probe tomorrow. also have HQ's loaded and on the way (at long last) escorted by BB and CA's should
prevent the last unloading disaster.
Bombers got another 15 odd supply hits over 2 days, this is becoming an average now and must be hurting after weeks of this
sort of attention. In a change of mind i'm thinking of not invading eniwetok as planned as the SW Pac looks a LOT weaker
than originally thought. If i can scrounge up the transports we will invade green island ,hollandia and Wewak . Along
similar lines a speculative invasion of Sansapor in north new guinea is leaving darwin port today. According to recon
flight the base is unoccupied so i'm sending in base forces and engineers with the 30th Aussie infantry brigade.
Batavia is lookng very very weak too, one div and some artllery have arrived to besiege with more on the way the defenders
seem to be 1/3rd of a regiment and the defeated NLF unit that tried to defend earlier. We 'should' take it down pretty quick.
With that in mind and to spook japan the RN CV's will be making a foray into the java sea just in range of Soerbaja (where
there are definately TK's in port) I suspect some japanese CV's are in Balikpapan (s Borneo) so we'll not get too
adventureous. the mossie recons can run a few missions to find out.
Over in China the AVG returned and found the only japanese unit actually flying in theatre as far as i can tell.

another tanker succumbs to torps and shelling off borneo ( this is tanker alley) need to send in more subs here, that said its
a dangerous place for subs as ASW A/C have sunk a few and damaged a heap load (30+) some of which are so badly damaged they
bailed water in darwin and are heading to Sydney for major repair works.

Hmmm. What is the ground combat status at Iwo? I notice you haven't made any assaults for few turns. I would assume you are waiting for the next wave to land.
Really nasty coastal guns there too.
..and I think you are correct. Joe is definately reinforcing Okinawa area which he needs to do. Unfortunately for him losing Iwo spells big time trouble.

i'm waiting for HQ support as you suggested , the cent pac HQ is aboard a BB escorted group and heading to Iwo as we speak . the limited tank attack was a predictable failure. no matter what i have in LR CAP the blasted emily and recently H2K mavis seem to get through.
I'll do a screenie from IWO next turn but its about 1500 (us) vs 1000 (jap) i could just blunder in with 2-3 more divs but this game i am (and so is Joe ) being a nod toward realism (self imposed invasion of 30+ PP's ) and i hate wasting pre prepped points [;)]

Looks like Japan has no supply problems at all [&:], which given i've stopped every ship for 2 months and the heavy bombers along
with high altitude torpedo bombers (on airfield attack) hitting 10-20 supply points a day i'm at a loss to suggest what
else to do.. similarly the BB group did a real number today and by far the best bombardment still had no impact on the
adjusted defence.

Back to safe waters next turn. No air cover at all either [&:], i was at least expecting some defensive fighters and japan
has some far better planes now like the Jack of which i have seen virtually no sign at all.
also Batavia is woefully underdefended. ATTACK ! .. IF the rest of Jave is this empty we will be celebrating come christmas [;)]
Palembang is still a tough nut but i've now destroyed pretty much all the resources after a lenghty bombing campaign and soon
to switch the heavies and B25's onto ground attack duties (some will remain on airfield attacks to disrupt building and
possibly hurt supply levels. 2 more brit brigades are being sent up too. (BFF and another i cant remember).

The SW Pacific lost another island to the paras today too. these are proving invaluable in isolating Rabaul and truk.

Recon is scouting out others and the 1st paras are available should any prove empty. Meanwhile we'll pick up the 3rd paras with
flying boats as i don't think Emirau has an airfield yet.
Speaking of Paras i have 2 large para drop formations in north sumatra all prepped for palembang so we'll soon test the theory
of paras reducing fort levels on suprise drops. As its primarily a SEAC operation we'll use the indian para brigade 1st
and possibly the americans to grab the empty west coast bases to prevent suprises.
First up Aztez the CR for the probe on IWO:-

Much of the same really. And that damned invasion fleet hasn't moved one hex in 4 days now. in frustration ive assigned it to invade Sorong instead of Sansapor .. lets hope it actually moves nest turn. [:@]
As far as the other invasions go no sighting of Japanese patrol a/c and all LRCAP has been assigned for several bases to prevent weather being too much of a factor.

RE: 43 - The Mouse bites back. Rob vs Littlejoe 43+
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/03/44
Busy turn ! the invasion fleets moved faster than anticipated and both wewak and green island were invaded today. Hollandia will
also land tomorrow (fingers crossed).
Lets start with Green island which was a great victory for the allies.
Ground combat at Green Island
Allied Shock attack
Attacking force 23357 troops, 194 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 535
Defending force 11555 troops, 31 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 139
Allied max assault: 476 - adjusted assault: 222
Japanese max defense: 84 - adjusted defense: 42
Allied assault odds: 5 to 1 (fort level 3)
Allied forces CAPTURE Green Island base !!!
Japanese aircraft
no flights
Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 1 destroyed
Japanese ground losses:
819 casualties reported
Guns lost 15
Allied ground losses:
249 casualties reported
Guns lost 15
There were the remains of 2 naval guards here and 2 base units and someone had some nice guns as the invasion flotilla did get a bit battered in the initial landings.
Coastal Guns at Green Island, 63,89, firing at TF 1024
TF 1024 troops unloading over beach at Green Island, 63,89
397 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Allied Ships
DD Meredith
AK William Dawes, Shell hits 10, on fire, heavy damage
DD Heermann
AK Vitus Bering
DD Hale, Shell hits 5
AK Samuel F. Miller, Shell hits 1
AK Nathaniel Bowditch, Shell hits 3
DD Renshaw
AK Jeremiah S. Black, Shell hits 3, on fire
AK Gideon Welles, Shell hits 7, on fire
AK Allioth, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Franks
AK Naos, Shell hits 6, heavy damage
AK Arided, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
Japanese ground losses:
20 casualties reported
Allied ground losses:
1252 casualties reported looks a lot worse than it is.
Guns lost 4
Mine sweeper raids report no mines at either Wewak or hollandia. also no guns fired on the wewak landing forces and we can unload
at leisure here, which is just as well because the initial supplies failed to land and the men need food badly. (at sea).
There seems to be 3 Japanese AP's at paramushiro jima and the PBY's and B24's have failed to attack so 4 DD's sent in at high speed
to see if they are transports.
Well the 'stuck' invasion TF did start to unload at sarong ( v v slowly) and no Japanese response yet suggests few defenders.
even though new recon shows 6000 men there ( and sansapor was empty too [:-])
Over in Java the British will shock attack Bandoeng as only the 2 retreating units are present. then on till we meet some 1/2
decent resistance. the rail lines make this a fast overland attack. Palembang is getting pounded round the clock , so is Iwo
Jima , and the good news there is japanese AV has dropped to 1000, so a deliberate attack will go in tomorrow. just in case though
a 'spare' div is heading from wake to marcus just in vase its needed ( withdrawn from the invasion of Pagan as thats not on the
horizon quite yet)
Rambling back to Java for the last comments, the royal navy is now based in batavia. Unfortunately there was very little fuel in the
post upon capture. Fortunately there are 15 FULL tankers disbanded into the teklobatong (the initial gain) . theye were there
for a similar contingency just in case japan managed to isolate the bridgehead. now they are fortitously 1 hex away with enough
fuel to keep the RN going for quite some time.
Piccis of Java to illustrate the emptyness of the place. [:D]

Ouch! Nasty coastal guns at Green island!!! [X(]
...I think it wise to move that spare division to Iwo Jima.. You need that base soon! [;)]
Good luck in the forthcoming battles.. I will stay tuned! [:D]

RE: 43 - The Mouse bites back. Rob vs Littlejoe 43+
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/09/44
This was a very good couple of days all round, plenty of japanese bases fell to overwhelming allied attacks (ok i sent in way too
much in hindsight, maybe the Iwo experience clouded the judgement a tad [;)])
However lets start at the beginning :-
Japanese ASW seems to have woken up and both patrol subs at cahmran and brunei were attacked, Tresspasser needs a few dents hammered
out but the porpoise will just re-position to deeper waters.
ASW attack near Camranh Bay at 34,46
Japanese Ships
DD Karukaya
DD Fuyo
DD Asagao
DD Minekaze
Allied Ships
SS Trespasser, hits 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Brunei at 32,57
Japanese Ships
DD Hatsuzuki
DD Hakaze
DD Hayate
Allied Ships
SS Porpoise
Alied yada yada bombed XYZ .. the usual .
Heres the new plan for china , phase one went off well. This attack (piccie) is a diversion to try and make Joe move the huge army
in the changsah region north so i can at least besiege changsha. 8 chinese corps march east from ichang and appear to want to
besiege Hsingyang (in fact they are stopped one hex away. the retreat leaves just 5 Japanese units in kaifeng (3 of which just got
clobbered)
Ground combat at 50,31
Allied Shock attack
Attacking force 95500 troops, 624 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2950
Defending force 53997 troops, 620 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1135
Allied max assault: 6388 - adjusted assault: 3100
Japanese max defense: 1199 - adjusted defense: 571
Allied assault odds: 5 to 1
Japanese ground losses:
500 casualties reported
Guns lost 35
Allied ground losses:
3960 casualties reported
Guns lost 101
Defeated Japanese Units Retreating! hurrah !

Ground combat at Tjilitjap
Allied Shock attack
Attacking force 38106 troops, 358 guns, 422 vehicles, Assault Value = 917
Defending force 420 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2
Allied max assault: 1554 - adjusted assault: 844
Japanese max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1
Allied assault odds: 844 to 1 (fort level 0)
Allied forces CAPTURE Tjilitjap base !!!
Japanese ground losses:
142 casualties reported
Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!
The british advance in java continues apace with the fall of Tjiljap , also the magical appearance of 4 dutch minesweepers in
Tjiljap port was reported by local officers as a minor miracle since they must have been in hiding since 42 [&:]
Hollandia and Sorong both fell to allied assaults , this just leaves Biak as the only viable japanese level 4 airfield in the entire
new guinea area. Unfortuanately for Joe its just in B24 range of Lae and Darwin [:D]. also recon spotted 24 japanese bombers here
last turn and no fighters . the allied heavies have no escorts but 24 beaufighters will sweep the base from Bulla just in case.
Frankly i don't like using beaus like this but nothing else has the range.
Wewak will fall next turn too. Truk is looking like a tempting target with 20k men and 'pale' red indicator so the hollandia troops
have switched to a truk prep. Now truk is under the b25 envelope from admiralty not much he can do about it without a major
effort. Incidentally the b25s hit Truk port last turn and sank 1 DD and 6 ML's ! happy me
Iwo Jima will remain quiet on the land front as the troops still have horrible disruption 50-60 .. still no rush here now with it
at level 2 forts .. is it worth a rested shock attack? or just wear it down with deliberate .. given 2 day turns i cant see
much advantage to a shock attack.
Thats it for todays update .. 4 more free minesweepers in a bonus and a bit odd too .. oh well never turned down a gift horse before [;)]
