Corps Structure

Post by madgamer2 »

Just for grins lets say that leader X has a corps command limit of 17 and commands corps Y. If I add say 3 1 star leaders to Y corps will it help the command structure and allow more units to be added?
Also As near as I can tell adding some 1 star Gen. to a corps just lets you detach a division sized unit at some point.
So exactly what does adding the 1 star Gen. to a corps do? I mean if I have say three divisions with leaders and I add them to a corps the division structure
goes away and the unit box shows all the leaders and then the units of the corps.

so if someone could shed some light on the problem for an old dude in small words so I can understand it would be great :-).

you are limited to 16 command points unless you add units such as the balloon which can add a bonus of 1 command point.
If as you say you are at 17 command points, adding 1 star generals wont have any effect on this.
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

Thanks that was what i thought. It does beg the question of what do you do with all those 1 star guys? I mean they command 2 units ....... a lot of Brig. are a lot bigger than that.
I generally put some in each corps in case I want to detach someone. I am wondering if the 17 units is always the total number of reg. units? It seems that some of the Brig. count for less than there total number or Reg. in the Brig. and some of the divisions have a larger number of Reg. than what are counted. I just want to know if there is some rule at work here.

thanks again

make divisions with your 1 stars, then you can combine them into corps or just leave them independant.

You answered your own question. You use the one star generals to make what are Divisions. The game will refer to them by the Generals name but not as a Division. Its also possible to add several (like 2?)to each corp to increase the number the corps commander can have. Also adding a baloon will add 1 to the corps commander's number.
If you look in the roster under Divisions the only entry will be the Divisions that start the game (for the North). Remember that the division for the south was about the same size as the corps was for the north, due mostly to better leadership.

The creation of Divisions is explained very well in this thread.

What is not explained very well, or is consitantly passed over is why some one-star generals can only form a brigade (i.e. absorb a single unit, instead of multiple). If this a 'feature' it would be good to differentiate these 'brigade one-stars' from the 'division one-stars' with some type of unit icon.

EDIT: got my answer on this.

This is only a minor nuisance in a very enjoyable and elegant game system.[8D]

Yes the forming of a division in the thread you noted WAS the way it was done before it was changed by the patch. I never played that version so I do not know if you could create Div. that were anywhere near the size of the 4 that the north starts with. I fear not.
What it comes down to is exactly what you said with Brig. Generals and Division Generals. SO the best you can do is use the Brig. to command maybe 2 units and use then for little more than garrison duty. It makes you form armies so you can form corps in order to have a chance against the Rebs.
I found myself with lots of Brigades in Louisville facing a Reb army of 600-700 points sitting in Lexington. I could not attack them because I had no army and no corps. I had the Generals and when Grant got there I formed an army with three corps and because KY had gone to the Yanks the Rebs I believe were surrounded because after about a week of one attack by the North and three attacks by the Rebs the south gave up and the north took a lot of POW's.
In actual use the Brig. General was a Brigade commander and this is the way they are treated in the game. T 2 star General was commander of Divisions. In the game the 2 star will command about eight Regimental unit pts. This is to reflect the situation at the start of the war when the North started building corps with the same 2 star generals as commanders.
So the reason you can't form Divisions with 1 star general in the game is that they were commanders of Brigades. To form a division size unit in the game you use a 2 star general
