LCVP Armaments

Post by KG Erwin »

All of the sources I've found show that the LCVP was armed with two .30 cal AAMGs. In the game, they have the deadly .50 cals. This appears to be wrong. It makes the landing craft a bit cheaper, but takes away their capability to destroy some beach defenses.

This is starting to make me wonder -- where are the .50 cals? Some US tanks had them, but I'm beginning to think that they weren't very common on WWII battlefields. We've already replaced them with .30 cals on the 75mm SP halftrack.

To take them away from this ubiquitous landing craft may disappoint some folks (including yours truly), but I think we've been under a long-standing misconception.

The .30 cals were stand-off weapons against attacking enemy aircraft, NOT offensive weapons for direct fire against a defended beach. That's what the later armored amphibious tanks were for (the LVT [A] s). There's where the confusion set in.

Note: the heavier LCMs ( for vehicle transport ) are correct -- they DID have two .50 cals mounted.

The .50cals have been "standard" armament for the US landing craft since I don't know when. I didn't review them for Enhanced as to their accuracy of data; I simply adjusted the names to be more historical, and added a few other varieties. So these have been wrong for a long time.

The only small landing craft I have seen that has the .50cal is the LCM (Landing Craft Mechanized); the others should have the .30cal MGs. However, both MGs are AA models, and are intended for air defense, not attacking beach obstacles. In reality, the craft would fire during the approach at suspected enemy positions, but once the troops or vehicles were unloaded, they would return to the larger ships, and not stick around the beach. In my view, the problem is the decision by players to use them as "mobile MG nests", cruising up and down the beaches pouring MG fire into enemy bunkers. But that's the beauty of the game: people can use the units however they wish to.

Well, I should've caught this error a few years back, but to be honest, I paid closer attention to the ground units, not the ships and landing craft.

It's an easy fix, so I don't know if it warrants you guys issuing another OOB patch.
