teleported sherman

Post by Houtje »

L.S.,
had a strange occurrence just now: I fought a battle as USA in Chattanooga (I was attacked while besieging C'ooga). I started in HW, but after a while had it instantly resolved. I lost, fair enough, but after the turn report I saw that my losing army had teleported from Chattanooga area to The Swamps (west of the Mississippi). I suppose that's a bit too far for a normal retreat, isn't it?
Tanks in advance for any help.

(Moving to beta-testing sub-forum.)

We need more information. In particular, what month/year did this happen? And you mention Sherman -- was he in command of this army when this happened? Also, were any other battles fought and lost by the USA that turn?

Thanks for the speedy reply: I saved the game right after it happened. Should I send this to anyone or just post all the details of the situation here?

Hold on to the save files, since we might need them, but first let us know more about the situation.

Also, was I right to assume you were playing with the beta patch?

I forgot to mention, I was playing the 1.9.23 patch. I just installed the 1.10.5, which was a dumb thing to do, since now I can no longer open my saved game. My apologies, and here's what I remember: it was July or August 1862, Sherman was in command of my losing army, he was attacked whilst conducting a siege against C'ooga. I don't think I lost any other battles that turn; I was, however, conducting siege operations against Charleston or the forts protecting Charleston. I was playing the Coming Fury Scenario, (not balanced), First Sergeant Diff., Union power +2.

Huh. Looks like you've stunned Eric and everyone else into silence with this report. Since no one else has ever reported an army being teleported a few provinces away, I'm inclined to chalk this up to some freakish occurrence rather than a bug that should be hunted down over a period of days/weeks/months.

I had asked about the version you were playing because when I first saw your report I thought that possibly it was linked to the new code we've added that specially pertains to Sherman and is meant to simulate his famous "nervous breakdown" (as it's often called). But clearly, whatever this was was something else.

Yeah, I misread this at first too.  I thought it had to do with Sherman but not really.  I have never retreated more than one province myself so no, can't say I've seen this bug.

OK, thank you for the replies; I'm fine with a one-time-weirdness, since I'm now playing the new Beta-patch anyway. I'd like to know what the special Sherman-code is - it sounds very interesting.
Since I'm asking about the new patch anyway: I read about the new patch preventing 'Rebel Hordes' being unleashed upon a Union player in the Southern Steel scenario. Is that also the case in the (unbalanced) Coming Fury scenario? I'm asking because in the 1.9.23 patch, as Union player with a +2 to USA power and at 1st sergeant diff., I encountered a 140,000 man CSA Army near Cairo.

Yes, the change is to the July scenario, or any future scenarios we add, since we're changing the relationship between camps and population levels.

As for Sherman, a Union defeat early in the war will dishearten him and make the high-strung general need some time to collect himself. Regardless of the turn in which he goes on the "critical" list, he always returns in the turn (Jan. or Feb. 1862, I forget just which) when he historically returned to active duty. Our reason for this, in addition to simulating history, is to ensure that the CSA's significant edge in generals at the start at the war isn't offset by the availability of Sherman right away. So this is good for game balance.
