Been there and done that. At one point I lost over 120 planes to flak in a 2 day turn.
The Red AAA is brutal but I found that 7,000 feet works better than 6,000. The losses to light AAA are much lesss.

Historiker: Welcome and thank you for the compliment. I try to keep things intresting. Sometimes there isn't much to report and other times quite a lot.
I'am already building up my defensive perimeter for 1944 and 1945 IF I even survive that long. [:)]
The idea why I went for Russia offensive is simple... a) I need some troops elsewhere b) I can overwhelm his airforce much easier now (obsolete Russian aircraft) and I have to fight him sooner or later.
..anyway, thanks for the compliment.
RUPD3658: Welcome! [:)] ...I have been following your clash with KDonovan. Intresting stuff and good later war year information there!
I'am usually bombing +10 000 feet so basically what you are saying I should do the initial strikes around 7 000 feet? Intresting information.
This is CHS though so I do not know whether it differs from Stock game you have ongoing. Need to think this through.. I still have few turns before the storm breaks loose.

Yes, that is in fact also my intention. When you manage to smash the reds, you can send (nearly) all the Manchurian troops into china wich will decide the battle.
After that, the hump awaits the chinese+manchurian troops...

[:D] ...well that is raw sketch of the outcome. I do hope this isn't going end up as my achilles heel.
If I'am succesfull than I will garrison Russian properly. I'am thinking about withdrawing maybe 50% of the troops there.
As for their target.. China maybe (It is already a stalemate since I don't Chuck has supplies to support large scale offensives there) ..than again I might use those elsewhere... I could build the "Pacific Maginot line" (Which naturally will be bypassed by the allies... or I might get an idea to launch few more large scale offensives... [;)]
These are the options but first I need kick some Russian butt.
I will post an screenshot from the front once the turn arrives.
KB is ready.. BB Yamamoto's TF will sail out next turn... Ominato is build up nicely for the offensive/defensive action againts Russia/ÙS.

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 6
Japanese max assault: 2324 - adjusted assault: 1038
Allied max defense: 457 - adjusted defense: 1459

Hmmm. Close enough. Next turn an shock assault is ordered. I think I might get 2:1 odds and knock some fort levels down! I want to get this over with as soon as possible.
Other NEWS
Thanks to hints my HI pools are rising rapidly. There is already + 10 000 in reserve... so basically 5000 points in every 2 days.. and I think it will increase more rapidly once my Tankers deliver Oil in some of the major HI cities.

RE: Russia activated... D-Day -1
Damn I send the turn back to Chuck this morning before I went to work.... and it hasn't returned! Now he is being lazy or too scared to do the turn! [:D][:-][:D]
Just a few thoughts about future happenings:
Russia... very intresting days ahead. The initial push needs to be strong. I cannot afford to bog down for months! I expect very heavy losses in the opening few turns. It is quite hard to figure out what kind of arrangements Chuck has done here. Vladivostok however needs to be seized quickly.
I think Chuck will launch an assault both from Burma and againts the Solomons. Way too much activity there.
Also Allies are building up Aleutians island chain. Thus meaning that US troops will enter Northern Theatre in aid for the Russians.
I don't have any idea were his CV force is located. Hell it could be anywhere from South Pacific to North Pacific. Also I don't have any intel were his Battleship fleet is. Those ships were damaged at Pearl Harbour but I think they should be operational just about now.
Economy still worries me quite a lot. This is definately my weakest side in the game.
Those are just few things I would like to have answer for or maybe not....!

You will earny a nice amount of Ressources and Industry in Russia...
How much do you have to cut off the russian Troops east of Manchuria? As I said, I'm planning an invasion into russia in one of my next games. I came to the conclusion, that it is absolutly essential to cut off the southern Russians, as they don't get supplies from north then and can be extreminated without a chance to retreat.
How is your offensive planned?

Historiker: True. Those resources would come in good use. I don't have an oppurtunity to take an screenshot but here how I try to play this out.
Hope to read about it when you start your Northern adventure. [:)]
Russian Offensive plan
* Large scale LBA bombing raids around the Russia. (Vladivostok, Borzya, Suchan, Iman, Blagovyeschenk) . The elite fighter squadrons are NOT in Russian front since I do expect an allied counterstrikes elsewhere.
Also Russian squadrons aren't modern fighters so I think I can overwhelm him.
I do expect heavy losses for both sides though. Actually this campaign might be very decisive on how the rest of the war plays out.
* Army Group A gathered at Mutanchiang will start to push towards Vladivostok. Initially some 5500 assault points.
* KB will hit either Vladivostok or Suchan. (Not decieded yet)
* 1 BB TF + 2 Cruiser TF will bombard either Vladivostok or Suchan. (Not decieded yet)
* 1 IJA division will push further South towards Vladivostok and link up with Army Group A.
* Small scale amphibitous landings are made at Okha. Seizing this base immediately.
Phase 2
* Army Group B (at Mishan), Army Group C (at Heiho) and Army Group D (at Hailar) are used flexible way. Each of these contain between 1200 - 2000 assault points. If Chuck moves his troops towards South than I can easily cut off him... and if he doesn't than Army Group A has easier days ahead too.
Basically at first these are used defensively and the main idea is tie down Russian infantry units in North and Central areas. Also, these armies will prevent anykind of counterstrikes made up by Russians.
* Army Group A continues its fighting towards Vladivostok.
* KB will remain in the area. (Mini KB covers other theatres among with top LBA squadrons)
* I have enough PP in reserve so I can release 2-3 IJA divisions from China to be used at Russia. This ofcourse depends on the initial results of the campaign.
* LBA's (Fighters, Bombers, Torpedo and Dive bombers) are stationed at Northern Japan. I do expect Chuck to come along with US Fleet. KB + LBA's should make any intervention attempt very costly indeed.
Phase 3
* (This hasn't been decieded or confirmed) ..it all depends on the outcomes of the initial battle.
* I can bring in more fighters and bombers if needed but I should be ok with the ones already in place. (At least I hope so)
That is basically it. Thoughts appreciated ofcourse. One thing for certain it is going to be a lot fun.

RE: Russia activated... D-Day -1
Do not forget to immediately close all airfields, that he can't bring allied 4es in.
But don't you want to try cutting off the southern units? If I understood your plan, you don't intend that! My thinking was about only covering the south and the main push in the north to cut them off. The southern units are already entrenched very heavy, so it shouldn't be needed to go in there immediately. When pushing in the north, I expect cutting them off from supplies which begins to weaken them while I'm not even in combat there. if you leave enough in the north to maintain the blockade, you can wipe the southern units completly out, while they could regroup otherwise...
Do you have enough ASW TFs there, to sink allied subs? If I were attacked, I would try to evacuate fragments to the US. If Russia gets conquered, the fragments will soon get big units again, with 300 Soviet Squads per month... You should also carry out ASW flights, if you can spare the planes.
Moreover: Are you shure to leave the Mini-KB at the front? It's no match for 6-7 allied CVs, so why risk it then? I would carry out airstrikes for 2-5 days with the KB, but after that I would send the KB back to the south. If you pull the mini-kb forward, you can perhaps maintain the illusion it's still there by putting i.e. only kates on some of the carriers. When striking on land bases then, you send to much kates for the Mini-KB - your opponent might think.
If he strikes then in the south, you don't just put your CVEs and CVLs onto an ambos ready for the falling Hammer formed by US and RN CVs, you can be the hammer, then!
I don't really expect a handful of allied CVs enter the inland sea in this stage of war, as you can easily form a CAP of several hundreds LB-Fighters and some hundreds bombers nearby...

RE: Russia activated... D-Day -1
Historiker: Good points.
The idea is to shutdown bulk of his airfields and thus destroy his airforce soon. I don't he can bring in 4E bombers too quickly. We an houserule regarding this and he needs to ship those planes and supporting troops via convoys! This makes it more likely that those convoys are escorted by US Carriers. He cannot just sail into Russia without proper cover. This is why KB is at Northern Pacific.
(And Chuck will come with US forces.. he has never played againts Russia so he more than excited about this prospect..)
Absolutely. I would love to cut his Southern Army off. I looked the CHS setup regarding Russia and it was very diffrent from stock. Russians actually do have sizeable forces in Central and Northern Russia. These units must be tied down in there... that is why I have 4 separate Army groups.
If he moves towards South than I will cut him off and If he tries to flank me than I repulse these efforts. (That is the idea at least) ..but I do like your plan/idea very much. I think that I would need few more divisions though.
I doubt Chuck will pick up fragments for US. He is very conservative player with honour on historical aspects. So, If I wipe out Russia than that will be it.
That is good point about the Mini KB. I do not intend to fight it out with full US CV force but if he comes with lets say British ones than battle is on... or if he has divided his carriers into Southern and Northern TF's.
Oh, and I need to refit and repair KB for a moment once it is finished its duty in Norhern seas.

RE: Russia activated... D-Day -1
Hmm...
In my eyes, one must attack Russia in the North, because of several advantages:
1. You cut the southern forces off - and this should be argument(s) enough [;)]
2. If he reacts in the south, he's digging his own grave! Why? To react, he must move his units, but if he moves them, the units outside bases loose all their entrenchments with no chance to rebuilt within ne next month and the units in bases leave this bases and so their extrem fortesses between 6 and 9.
So if he attacks you into manchuria - let him come! He'll stay under permanent air attacks and gets into areas where you can make manuever warfare. Moreover, he leaves his heavy entrenched bases ungarded which allows you to make amphibious assaults there with reserve divisions - you do have an operational reserve, do you?
If he trys to break the blockade in the north, he must also leave his entrenchments...
So why trying to break through the line of defence? Regard the Schlieffen-Plan! You can also make the Sichelschnitt if he makes counterattacks!
I can't really believe he'll try to brake through with carriers! You have hundres of G3M and G4M together with hundreds of fighters - a breakthrough will be suicide, even if he puts only fighters on the carriers! You shurly won't need the KB there.
As far as I remeber, the first units picked up by subs are the aviation support ones, so he could bring in the support troops by subs...

Historiker: I see your point and cannot argue that they don't make sense...
1) Correct.. as I said I intend to use my forces flexible as possible. If an opportunity rises than I will cut his armies in 3 ways. Unfortunately I do not have enough troops available to start 2 massive assaults simultaneously unless he makes mistakes. [;)]
2) I want him to react to South.. that would be excellent news indeed. But I cannot afford to let him push from North towards South. Because I don't have adequate garrisons in central Manchuko nor that part in China. This would be total disaster if that would happen. Basically my reserves aren't big as I wouild like. [8|]
True. It is not likely if you think in game terms about the US troops arriving in via convoys. BUT he cannot move aircraft since these too need to be shipped via ships.... and he will come believe me.. this is an gut feeling... Chuck is way too excited about Russia so this is big thing for him. Acrually all of my Betty's and Nell's are in Borneo, Solomons, DEI and Burma. (A lot of torpedo planes in Northern part of Japan)

At Bangkok 250 fighters will head and sweep againts Moulmen. Some 200 British/US Fighters are expected. Intel also indicates that there are 200 enemy LBA bombers on the ground.
At Rabaul another 250 fighters will head out and sweep againts Port Moresby. US/OZ fighter CAP expected here with a lot of bombers on the ground.
These operations were not planned but IF he is going think of an offense than I will do. I do hope to suprise Chuck with these. I doubt he is expecting visitors and allied P40E pools cannot not be that high!
Also I don't think these strikes are recommended by veteran Japanese players!!! [:D][:D][:D]

See the screenshot... It speaks volumes! One base that is not on the map is Borzya..It will hit too. [:-]

That concluded IJA business at Java. Now the spearhead turns elsewhere.

Banzai... Russia invaded
No turn back from Chuck this evening. That is not an suprise since I think he has quite a few things to digest now that Russians are at war.
Fingers crossed.. just maybe everything went ok for the Japanese in Russia, Burma and Solomons.
I do estimate that the total losses for both sides in terms of an aircraft are anywhere between 1500-3000 planes in two days.
We will soon find out how off the mark that guess actually is.
Now time to head to bed and get some sleep... [>:][>:]

Both sides lost a lot of planes in the 1st turn but quite a few LBA's were torched on the ground.
The major objective was accomplished though. Vladivostok airfield is shutdown for business!!! [:-] Next turn a large shock assault is scheduled at Voroshilov! (Intel indicates 6 units defending the base)
My intel also reports 20 units at Borzya. I think Chuck might try an counterstrike there.
I'am not going to relieve the pressure. No, I will hit him hard next turn too despite losses that can be expected.
Okha Invasion didn't go as planned. Chuck had moved a fragment of an division there so it is stalled for now.

In Burma US/RAF fighters and bombers torched some 20 Oscars at Tavoy. Too bad that my sweep mission didn't find those planes at Moulmein. Maybe better luck next turn though.

That was a costly onslaught, but at least some of the big airfields are closed. Congrats!
How are your plane pools doing, can you replace your losses or is this something to worry about?

If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

Thanks! It was costly business as you said... at least the main and most important objective was accomplished which was Vladivostok. Now the road is open so to speak.
As for my pools... well... those are far from good shape! [:D][:D] ...basically you don't want to know. I will rotate my squadrons in and out of the frontline action.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
Ok. Some good news and some bad news. The biggest positive thing is the fall of Voroshilov. Those 6 Russian rifle divisions were routed in 1st assault. (Very suprised)
The bad news are that Russian airforce is putting up and tough fight indeed. I wasn't expecting them to be this stubborn. Also, The damage CV Soryu means that she will be out of action for sometime. The torpedo caused +40% system damage to the ship.
Also enemy forces repulsed our landings at Okha.
It hasn't been boring that is for sure too.
