Getting started

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Getting started

Post by jadam12 »

Greetings,
after buying the game several months ago I did not got into it in detail, but now after reading some of the AARs I've decided to go for it and finally read through the entire manual as well as most of the threads here on these boards.
I've checked the details of the new uncommon valor scenario, is there anything else changed from 'total war' I should be aware of? Which one do ppl play?
I assume ppl us advanced supply rules, is that right? I'd eventually like to get into MP so I'd like to play as most of those games are played but could not find description in the AARs about the options used in those games.
Also is it worthwhile playing against the AI or should I switch to PBEM after 1 or 2 campaigns against the AI? Is the AI competent?

I might have additional questions as time passes, and I must admit at first glance after I bought the game I was a bit disappointed/confused back then about the board game style of it, but now I feel entirely differently about it, in fact I start favouring it over the real time strategy games I used to play (such as HoI:DD). It is really surprising how that simple but effective engine can simulate the strategical problems and difficulties of the war without going into too mucn detail and micromanagement. After playing Hoi:DD for years I got tired of the micromanagement one had to do every single campaign at a high rate to be effective, not to mention that I was never able to get into MP as it does not have the wonderful PBEM capability and it always had desync issues for me (and the AI was quite incompetent)...

After checking these boards for over a week now regularly it seems that there are quite few new threads/posts,I hope it is not dead.

Anyway thanks for reading through this post and answering some of my questions :),

Forget about the AI - it is just good for learning the mechanics of the game. After a little exercise you should play by email. It is great fun - but be warned - you might get addicted to it quickly.

Hehe, yeah. Though in my first real game I perform quite badly:(
Eastern germany has been occupied by the WA just before I could take france and create vichy so now I have to repair everything there.
What is the best strategy to deal with france? I went from the low countries but got repulsed at first try so france could take my lightly defended eastern german territory with a lot of supplies... It is strange though that vichy fires even if half of germany is under french control.

Eastern Germany was taken, how? amphibious invasion? Are you sure it wasn't W. Germany taken.

Take the Low Countries in Wi40 and the rest of France in Sp40, that way you have enough forces to protect Germany against a human player, against the AI you can dare taking the LC in Fa39 and France in Wi40

just to answer some of your other queries:

(P)lay (B)y (E)- (M)ail is usually done with;
advanced supply, end date and auto-victory ON, fog of war on.
Try playing the AI on easy, after a game or 2 you should be able to beat the (fairly competent actually) AI. then just post for someone to take on a new player.

By the way, Haudrauf1962's comments above:
play by email. It is great fun - but be warned - you might get addicted to it quickly.

Should be taken seriously. Many AWD players are doing 2+ turns a day, which is a real investment in time (totally worth it, in my opinion!)

Best of luck and have fun ; )
