the lovely "FORMAT C".
Invalid Drive Specification.
If you think that's good for your PC you can easily do that daily [;)]

I too think "making love" is good... But I don't think I should be doing that 24 times a day... if you know what I mean, eh? [;)]

And one more thing, if you think abusing others is good (YOU did that with me the last time you DID reply one of my posts, you see, I DO have an excellent memory), "you can easily do that daily" too. I think I will be able to survive another of your pathetic "cyber attacks"... arh arr! So go ahead!

Looks like you not only should try to learn something about PC command syntax but a few other things as well. Smileys for instance.
With your splendid memory that should not be that much of a problem.
The correct syntax of the format command is "format c:". Substitute the letter c with the letter of the drive you wish to format. But please note that the colon (":" without the quotes) is required.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes
Rainer

And the question is: "what makes you think I ignore this little thing"? You only needed to read Post #18... Hope this helps [:D]

Where does this wild assumption comes from, I don't know. And hey! I do NOT want to know [;)]

P.S.:
and NO, my message wasn't edited to correct that possible "mistake".

And notice: 9/14/2007 6:46:15 PM (when you wrote your message)

P.P.S.:
I hope this helps too. And if it doesn't, I don't give a rat's ar**...

P.P.P.S.:
also know that I am not interested at all in interacting with you. If I break this rule, you can call me a liar [:D]

P.P.P.P.S:
anyway, it seems I will be forced to break this rule since I don't know (according to your extravagant imagination) the correct syntax. I mean, I guess I will need your help, somehow. No wait, no need to type "Format C:" anymore. Nevermind.

P.P.P.P.P.S:
I almost forgot: sorry for the many bloody "Post Scriptums".

I apologize if you feel offended by my remarks. That was not my intention.
When you said you don't defrag but instead format I read that as a funny remark. Because you forgot (in your second post) the colon, I was trying to follow up that style with pointing out the missing colon. Not very funny, I admit.
Again, I apologize if you feel offended. I do not wish to offend anybody here.
Peace?

Rainer, I felt offended by your remarks of your "other" post (months ago). Not by this one. But enough is enough. That's why I jumped this time (I should have jumped that other time). "Ok, you may bite one time, but I won't allow you a second time". And this was your second time.

I am not here to offend anybody. I try to be always polite and nice (I am not here to make mates either). So, no problem. I appreciate your apologies. I beg your pardon as well. "Peace then" [:)]

I’ve had similar issues with WitP to the OP, I don’t know why but the game would run fine for a while then just slow to a crawl and become really unresponsive.

No idea why it does it, but I did find a work around to it. Alt-tab out to Windows then Alt-tab back into the game, after that it always is back to running at normal speed.

Anyways just thought I'd post that up in the off chance that it's of any use.

Have tried everything, is running a fraction faster I guess, but 3 hours for the AI to complete a turn is just not on.
I have 448 meg of RAM, that should be enough but perhaps I do need a new PC. Anything else I can do to switch of unneeded programmes or processing. How about just disconnecting from the net, would that cause anything to run faster??

xj900uk,

When at the window desktop (I assume you are running XP), "right" click on the clock in the lower left corner and open the task manager. Click on the "Process" tab. Click on the column "CPU" twice. If nothing else is running, you should see that "System Idle Process" is using 99% of the CPU.

There was a "upgrade" from windows back in May that messed up the automatic upgrade feature on some machines. This caused a file called svchost.exe to use 90%+ of the CPU for quite a period of time. If this is the case, your machine will run very slow. Also, make sure you have run a virus scan recently....viruses will also really slow your computer down.

It looks like you have plenty of machine to run WITP. I would suspect that you have something running in the background that is eating a lot of your CPU processing speed.

The best way to clean up your system is to use MSConfig:

I would recommend that a person is computer savie if you are going through msconfig. It would be easy to deactivate a needed program if you are not careful.

Here is a link to some of the descriptions that someone might encounter in msconfig.

From the link I posted:
However, a good rule of thumb is to disable only those programs that you recognize and don't need to have running all the time. When in doubt, leave it on. Or, better still, check out Paul "PacMan" Collins' huge "Startup Applications" list at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php. This list of over 13,000 startup items you may encounter in MSCONFIG tells you which items are absolutely necessary, which items are optional, and which items you should definitely uncheck.

Thanks for the tip, Charboiled. Yes, there is something else running in the background which is making my PC in general go pretty slow, but no idea quite what as I do a weekly Norton virus scan and that always comes up blank.
My family are convinced I have two big anti-virus software packages running the whole time (Spyware and also Norton) that they spend the whole time fighting each other and using up all of the spare memory.
My daughter also downloaded Morpheus some while back to burn music CD's off the net, no problem with that but I noticed ever since she added that software, the PC has never been quite as fast althuogh I can't see any signs of it running at the moment.
Can I, when I do a Task Manager process check, switch off that svchost.exe programme as I notice it is running right now and my PC is pretty slow

The computer need svchost to work correctly. Turn off Windows automatic updates and the problem will stop. Go to "Control Panel"...click on "Security Center"....click on "Automatic Updates"....click on "Turn off Automatic Updates". You will have to check online for any windows updates yourself, but your computer should be back to normal.

Here is a link explaining what is going on:

They might be correct. If both scanners are set to constantly watch your PC, it is very likely that they will conflict with each other, as they both will try to scan files currently at use at the same time. I HIGHLY recommend that you use only 1 virus scanner at a time. Either uninstall the second one (my advice would be to get rid of Norton), or be sure that one is completely shut down. Keep your 'primary' virus scanner updated all the time, though (daily updates).

I don't want to get rid of Norton entirely, as it is very good for detecting and killing viruses - already stopped several that came down the broadband in their tracks.
Perhaps I will switch it off (i do have that option) and also disable the net whilst I am playing, see if that makes a difference.
I have already switched off automatic updates, and if anything it has made my system slower as it is always telling me that I need to switch it back on and download/install them!!! [:@]

My auto-updates are turned off on my computer because of the svchost problem and the only notification I get is at the end of the boot process, a red Norton notification pops up in the lower right telling me I have "issues" and offers to fix them. If I tell it to "fix" the problem, then Norton will turn the auto-updayes back on and I'm back to a slow machine. If I tell it not to fix them, the auto-update stays off and the computer runs fine, but I get the red warning box each time I turn the computer on. Other then that, I never receive any other warning.

What kind of notifications are you getting to turn auto-update back on?
