RE: Akita Burns
Nemo I agree - shock horror
All I was saying I need to break the back 1 at a time not that I dont do it.
Saipan is getting the treatment tomorrow - I do need to be a little carefull with BB's I only have 8 of them on station and ltd ammo I would rather use carrier air to clean out saipan harbour and send in the heavies tomorrow night (also I was out of position)
The plan is to use carrier and land based air to try and take out Saipan tomorrow I will follow it up with Tinian if my losses are acceptable and then Guam
In a move I should have ordered weeks ago <kicks himself> 2 Battle Sqns of the Eastern Fleet including several RN Battleships and HMS Renown plus 2 cruiser sqns and 3 CVE's (with FAA Corsairs) set sail from Colombo last night it will take a long time to get them on station and I should have done it weeks ago but better late than never in total 50 ships are transferring to Centpac

RE: Akita Burns
What it does all come down to is breaking Saipan tomorrow it looks like a large chunk of Pauks surface fleet is in the harbour so I ordered the TBM's and Helldivers onto range 2 with orders to naval attack and I ordered most of my fighters to sweep Saipan - this had better work !!!!

RE: Akita Burns
Keep the LBA pressure on in Sumatra and Malaya to force him to keep replacing or rotating his LBA assets. Hopefully, he is running down on his reserves of planes/pilots so he has to chose only one front vs both.

Yup, You need to keep him busy everywhere, this should be the n°1 rule for allied players, force the japanese players to defend several places, rotate Airgroups and incurring lots of op losses in the process, etc..
Adieu Ô Dieu odieux... signé Adam
RE: Akita Burns
Easier said than done Palembang attrits me (P38's) as much as him but I am persisting and he isnt defending anything else.
I watch the damage levels at Chungking VERY closely if it opens even for a day Pauk will suffer....but he is keeping Chungking and Changsa totally closed which stops me hitting him but the more I hurt him elsehwere the greater the chance of them opening I have a veteran/rested P47D group waiting for the opportunity if it arises then Pauks supply of trained uber pilots will dry up dammed quickly

RE: Akita Burns
I would like to hit his training camps hard to stop another crop of elite ground attack 'aces' just give me the opportunity please Pauk 2 more days of not bombing Changsa and I will send in every fighter I can find and you pilot training days are over......
RE: Akita Burns
Pauk hasnt sent me a turn so I dont know how my little attack on Saipan went - was KB in position, did he have more fighters than I realised, are my carriers on the bottom OR did I sink his cruisers and clea out the port....
Being at work is irritating I cannot get on with the important stuff like getting out of the mess I created for myself !!!!

You should start a programm of your own for USN pilots (I know, it's gamey, but it will help to correct things in this game; send some VR groups to China).
About your Saipan invasion: It was a close thing, maybe closer than you realize now. If your opening sweep had worked as planned, things would've played out completely different.
Lesson learned: always order Carrier TF's to move one hex closer to its target than neccessary plane range to make sure that they're in place even if the TF moves one hex less than you think it should; also applies to Invasion TF's (I always move them to a position one hex off their target the turn before the invasion starts).
RE: Akita Burns
I know I may lose because of it but I refuse to perform ground attack training (I just cannot bring myself to do it) If I wanted to do it mandalay would be perfect...
Oh I think you are correct had the B29's not been gutted because my carriers were a hex short then one of the AF's would have been closed and it would have been very different - I am not sure Pauk would have impaled his LBA on my Carriers the way he has if my B29's were closing an AF every day.
But cest la vie I have had my fair share of luck with movement and weather (mostly against PZB and SPrior - Pauk seems to lead a charmed life) so I cannot complain - as nemo would say (correctly) any plan that depends on luck to succeed is not a plan the allies should be following.
I made 4 mistakes.
1. I should have waited for Tico and Bennington
2. I should have despatched 6 or 7 of the 9 BB's currently in Eastern Fleet to CENTPAC weeks ago.
3. I should have saved my B29's until I was sure I was in range
4. I should never have agreed to restrictions on allied PDU (Wildcats -> Hellcats) or even Corsairs on Carriers

RE: Akita Burns
OK Now I am baffled 400+ strike aircraft failed to launch the sweep went off an cleared out the enemy CAP but only 18 bombers launched wtf !!!!
Looks like several heavy ships were in port and uncovered I could howl with frustration
My Strike Aircraft were on double duty Naval followed by AF and they launched against neither....

RE: Akita Burns
Well, as you know there's a problem with dual-duty missions. Probably its best to just split them, half naval and half airfield attack.
As to the rest just stay the course and close the first base then the second and so on. Right now you must both be at the end of your logistical tethers and whoever stays the course and has the greatest willpower will win. Just keep at it.

RE: Akita Burns
I actually didnt know there was an issue with dual missions [:D][:D]
I tend not to use them ah well I have 100 more hellcats at Wake one carrier TF (whichever has the lowest number of fighters) will withdraw to rearm I only need to move it one day east and it will be in range of wake so it wont leave me to exposed.
Tomorrow I will clear Tinian bomb the base and send in 1 x BB TF to bombard leaving two with the fleet for follow on I want to maintain one TF with ammo with the fleet at all times for an emergancy bombardment.
A TF with 11th Airborne Div and a lot of supplies left SF last night
Andy
B29's will keep Saipan supressed

RE: Akita Burns
OK just reviewed the turn my losses were heavy but acceptable
USS Lexington has departed the fleet to take on replacement Hellcats I have about 100 at Wake in 2 Replenishment Groups and lots of Wildcat Sqns I will start to pass them through the carriers back to the fleet
I have ordered an effort strike on Tinian if KB comes in I will defeat them until they do I will finish off the AF's.
I am holding the BB's back I wantr to save their ammo as it will take 4 days to rearm and return - I am watching all the AF's like a hawk 1st sign of a massive air reinforcement to any of them and the heavies will go in en masse and toast the place.
Basically I have decided that the BB's are better kept as a threat to stop Pauk coming in with more LBA.
B29's and Carrier Air will try to close down the other AF's
Also when my troops have recovered from the failed shock attack and I have raised my detection level I will send in all three TF's to crucify Tinian.

RE: Akita Burns
Hmm, the only problems with that plan are that:
1. It loses the shock effect of simultaneity - closing multiple bases at once.
2. It loses the shock effect of Mass - you are sending in less force than you could to attack the bases you will attack.
3. You speak of Tinian all the time when my reading of the results shows that the reason Tinian etc held was LRCAP from the other two islands covering it, not the fighters from Tinian itself.
4. While BBs being used as a "threat" are certainly effective in terms of deterring LBA basing what is MUCH more effective is actually 100% service and 100% runway damage following a naval bombardment.
Threat etc is nice but given that this is a must win battle I just question the fact that you aren't hitting him as hard, as quickly or as often as you could. If this is must win then it seems to me that it would be important to hit as hard as you can, as often as you can, as quickly as you can as opposed to being full of finesse and going down the less certain path of "deterrence".
If I were Pauk and saw this happening I would simply base small Chutai of Bettys at the airfields. As they are small they won't effect the air balance number and also they won't be as prone to being killed by UeberCAP. They wouldn't do much but they might lame a few ships here and there. In the meantime I would keep an eye out for your reinforcement convoy and as it approached I would sortie my surface combat fleet ( sprinting it in to one of the non-Tinian islands --- which I would cover with a hellacious number of fighters ) and being ready to push LBA into the airfield on Day 2 after my fighter CAP destroyed your carrier air's strength.
If you sent in the bombardment fleet I would also win as my surface combat TFs would get to fight your surface combat TFs and I'd get to write down your forces some more- making bombardments in this invasion and the next less effective. Even if your surface combat TFs won the naval combats and bombarded the field you'd kill mostly planes not pilots and since Pauk has lots of planes - his bottleneck will be pilots - you STILL won't have achieved anything decisive.
On the other hand if the airfields are all closed when the reinforcement convoy is spotted Pauk is NOT going to send his precious surface combat TFs and KB in to contest the reinforcement as they'll get slaughtered.
Don't get me wrong, if you keep your nerve you will still succeed in this invasion so long as you keep pouring men and material in but the more you give in to the temptation to go for half measures and rely on "deterrence" as opposed to runway and service damage of 100% then the more losses you are going to suffer and the more your timeline is going to be screwed. This isn't criticism really just disquiet at seeing you draw back from committing and going for what look like safer half-measures but are, in the end, likely to be far more costly.

RE: Akita Burns
You might be right Nemo I will think on it before tomorrows turn. My subs put a torp into Chitose today and I sent the airforce back into attacking Chinese bases and Palembang lets see if Pauk tries another ambush
Tinian was hit hard today as my strike aircraft launched on the AF but the superforts set to attack Saipan failed to launch so I will send in one TF to bombard Saipan tomorrow while the Superforts will target it again assuming they launch that should mean 2 of the 4 AF's shut.
The Carrier air will hit Guam probably thus all three will have been hit hard. (I suspect that Pauk used the downgrade/upgrade trick to pull his LBA out of Saipan which means I have 2 or 3 days before he can attempt to refight over the islands.
I want to keep one bombard TF available but I will use the other two (I will probably reserve the slow RN TF and use the two fast USN ones as they will rearm quicker and be back on station
Lexington will have re armed so I should have another 90 fighters on CAP tomorrow with more to follow.
At no time will I allow more than 1 Carrier to be away from the fleet.
Barnes was a carrier operating in the middle of the air gap its irritating she took a torp I will have another CVE take her place tomorrow.

RE: Akita Burns
I am trying to force him into defending more bases so my longer range air will hit other bases while breaking through in Burma would be nice it is going to happen eventually so I think my air in Burma and Sumatra is better used hitting Pauk in as many areas as possible to keep him occupied.
If the need for B29's was not so critical over the Marianas I would be tempted to send 1 BG back to VP to re commence operations against Tarakan/Brunei etc.
I think this will be a valuable use for a single sqn again it forces Pauk to disperse and if he doensnt then I will hit Oil Oil Oil....

RE: Akita Burns
Its a balancing act 1 is now definitly closed I need to try and hit the others as well to close them and keep Tinian Closed.
I am thinking 2 Sqns on B29's from now on on Tinian. A BB TF and the other 2 BG's of 29's on Saipan and use my carrier air on Guam tomorrow but with more on naval attack as I suspect Pauk may return.
Lexington will bring my fighter strength back up to 400 so I should be safe enough from KB

RE: Akita Burns
Andy, sounds good. I think the most striking thing in your CRs is the completely lack of air defence in the other theatres. It looks to me like he has staked everything on Marianas. Commit here, break his back and then keep it broken by forcing him to spread thinly everywhere else ( and keeping that 200 fighter ambush ready to shuttle into Chungking at the least opportunity - once his pilot training breaks his air force breaks ). Congrats.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.
Well, that's that settled then.
RE: Akita Burns
Congrats is premature until Guam and Saipan are decisively shut AND at least one more carrier has fully replenished its fighters I wont feel 100% safe.
I just need the Superforts to do their job I messed up at the start and got them badly crippled I need to keep it up.

RE: Akita Burns
OK reviewed the turn and thought a little...
Lexington only moved 5 hexes grrrr so is out of range of Wake for resupply of Hellcats annoying as she had full ops and was ordered to move 12 hexes...
Anyway South Dakota TG will bombard Tinian tonight. I assume this will close Tinian.
I have split the B29's into three forces with orders to attack each of the bases my reasons for this if Wake is clouded so be it but if Wake is open I dont want all of the B29's to sit on the runway by splitting them to attack all three at least some will fly.
Carrier air is hitting Guam as primary with a secondary on Tinian again its the same logic Pauk has not sent fighters this turn into the base and I dont for a second think KB will come in alone so for another turn I have a free hand and I am going to use it..
My goals is to have all three closed ASAP.
Tinian will be 100% shut tomorrow Guam I hope about 50% and I think Saipan about 40%.
