I'm further along(4/1/43), but my 23rd FG and 24th FG have more than 400 kills between them. Then again they are flying P-38s and have been for at least 4 months. In my game the AVG is still flying P-40 Bs, do to a genearl lack of fighter availability and thus has been off the front line for 6 months.

That's pretty much exactly right. Well, at least the Port Moresby battles won the war by themselves. There were some American level bombers there too that played a big part.

At first it was the Japanese attacking Port Moresby with everything they had in an attempt to take it, and it was pretty touch and go then. I had to keep rotating fresh fighter groups in and out, and at times brought up some carriers to help out when things got really bad.

They kept rotating in fresh Zero and Betty squadrons too, but as the Aussies got good it started taking a heavy toll on them. I'm not sure if they kept attacking because they were hopelessly still trying to take Moresby, of if they were just trying to suppress the Moresby airfield so they could resupply their bases in northeast New Guinea.

Thats where the Americans came in. There was a group of Marauders that got really good at naval attack, along with some other help. The Marauders eventually got into the habit of dropping 2000 pound bombs and hitting their target. The computer kept stubbornly sending more cargo ships down, and every turn a few more of them got sunk. I also had my short range subs there which took a toll as well, as did subs in other places.

But due to my being somewhat reckless with my carriers early, they were either sunk or being repaired so I didn't have enough of them to go on the offensive. So month after month the Port Moresby battle went on. Eventually I started seeing more APs than AKs, which initially worried me before I came to the conclusion that Japan was running out of AKs. After the APs got sunk, now I mostly see barges. And the Japanese naval land based air forced were chewed up so much they were no real threat anywhere but around Singapore.

So essentially, the whole war was won right there. Except for the fact that I'm still pretty inept on the offensive. I'll have to work on that part.

Saved this grab - not the top ace but most impressive performance - all kills vs KB.

7 Kills in a Sea Gladiator...most impressive.

Well this was what I thought too, until I realize the next pilot in line was a FAA Fulmar jockey with 7 kills too [:D]

I must be doing something screwy then, because in my first game I'm getting a lot more kills that that. I'm sure it's mostly because I'm playing against the AI, and they are stubbornly stupid. And I have it set on historical strength, while I'm sure most of you have it set much more difficult. I'm also running what I think is an older version, Version 1.60, so that might also have something to do with it. But here what I had as of 9/6/43:

Image

How it happened was essentially all Port Moresby. The Aussies in their Kittyhawks were there, and every day another air battle ensued. Some of the battle were at Gili Gili too, as I transferred the Kittyhawks there when things got hot. I'm not sure about the Spitfires. I know I had some of them at Lunga, which also was pretty active, but I might have had them at Port Moresby as well. I don't remember.

I remember looking at one time and the Japanese had over 2000 Bettys shot down. How many Bettys could they possible have had? I'd have thought that was more than their total production.

Edit: I lust looked at that more closely. The top guy, Poole, had 78 kills in only 66 missions. That's almost 1.2 kills a mission. None of the other screens posted are averaging anything remotely close to that rate, which really makes me think I did something screwy with this game. I shouldn't be that far off from everyone else. Are the old versions of the game far more deadly to pilots?

You're not the only one. I too set Port Moresby as a pivotal location during my defence of the Solomons and (although this cap is from much later on - the kill totals by the Aussie Kittyhawk pilots were all done in 1942) no one has come close to what my Aussie and USN pilots acheived then.

This only tells half the story though as my carriers based out of Port Moresby took out 4 CVs and 4 BBs for the loss of one CA and 5 DD.

I don't know man. I'm running historical also 42a. Your guys missions are high, kills are high, and fatigue is very low. All experiance seem to be around 98 to 99. That seems odd.

I was just checking through my pilot lists in my campaign against Paul Layne.  We are in late-Sept 1944.  This campaign began on Dec 7th and we have played one day turns.  ANYWAY...I have an army pilot who is now flying a Frank with 25 kills.  My highest scoring navy pilot is attached to IJN Hiryu and in Zero M5 with 24 kills.

Have about 20 pilots in the high teens as well.

In my Big B 1.2 PBEM I have an AVG pilot on 20 and many thereabouts. I miss how stupid the AI gets in stock. Air groups keep getting filled with inexperienced pilots and are not rotated out, so once you go through the pain of breaking them you run up enormous scores. Port Moresby was always very good to be against the AI in stock. I even had P-39 pilots in the 30s!

In CHS and Iron Storm PBEMS I am not doing nearly so well. Especially in Iron Storm. The large Jap starting pool and plenty of Tojo's early on are making it quite nasty...

My missions are are lot less than sbq's for whatever reason. As for the fatigue, that's easy to explain. There is no longer any action at all in that area. Those guys have been playing cards for 6 months.

But hey, I admit is seemed funny. That's why I said I must be doing something wrong in my first post. This is the first game I've played so I don't know what it is. Might the fact that I'm running an older version (1.60) cause higher air-to-air kills?

Best non-fighter are 2 B24D pilots with 3 kills each. Out of PM or Gaudalcanal not sure which group it is right off.

I don't see MIA and KIA in my list. Can I reactivate this somehow?

IIRC, it only shows MIA and KIA for aces. It will show WIA for any pilots with one or more kills, so probably you have no WIAs at this time...

So Rick, does this mean you are back now? Are you ready to do your part of the turns? [8D]
