Another dumb question........

Post by Deathtreader »

Hi all,

........ that's barely related to COTA.
How do you do the conversion for British artillery from pounds to inches/centimeters??
A 25 pounder fieldpiece equal ?? mm.
An 18 pounder fieldpiece equals ?? mm.
A 60 pounder equals ?? mm.

For somebody wargaming as long as I have been this is embarrassing......

Rob.
So we're at war with the Russkies eh?? I suppose we really ought to invade or something. (Lonnnng pause while studying the map)

Interesting point I read on p38 of the ASL journal #7 with implications for all game designers modelling the so called 3 inch mortar.

It's actually 3.21 inches, like it's German equivalent, 81mm. This is provided in "Infantry Mortars of World War Two" from Osprey Publishing and an ASL team measured the mortar at Warminster. It checks out.

Apparently the British provided a special firing pin for use with captured German and Italian ammo.

So don't short change Commonwealth mortars, they may have had less range but their shells packed as much punch as any other 81mm.

I think the English system literally used the weight of the projectile, or the entire cartridge, not sure which.

Anyway you have the equivalents, but I thought I'd point out that there is no direct relationship.

...because I'm a nerd that's why....
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.
