Form'n orders bug -- I think

Post by ColinWright »

In the scenario I'm designing, I have event structures to let Brandenburg companies 'assault' coastal batteries via T.O.

If the 'assault' is successful, the coastal batterie goes into garrison (I don't just withdraw the battery because I don't want the Germans to be forced to commit to a major landing without knowing if the battery can fire). The Brandenburg company has a guerilla icon, so it appears near the battery if the 'assault' works.

Anyway, the mechanism works -- in general. However, I just ran a trial, and the assault on 'Fowey' was apparently successful -- the Brandenburg company appeared, and that's keyed off of the event that puts the battery into garrison. Logically, the battery would have to have gone into garrison for the Brandenburg company to have appeared.

But when I went to the British turn -- the battery wasn't in 'garrison.' Went to the editor -- yup, the form'n orders were for the battery to go to garrison.

As it happens, on the previous turn I'd noticed the battery had spontaneously gone into 'reorg.' I wasn't taking enough notes to be sure, but what I suspect happened is this: the form'n orders event happened alright -- but then the program ran a check to see if the battery could come out of re-org -- and apparently decided it could. When it did, this change overrode the 'form'n orders' event.

Could this happen? In this instance, it's not a big deal -- hey, the Brandenburgers took the wrong position and radioed that they'd destroyed their target. Sorry about that, guys...

However, I could see this really screwing up some scenarios. Form'n orders that fail to take effect because the formation happens to come out of re-org on the same turn.

At least try it one time when the battery didn't start out in reorg and see that it does goes to garrison.

I'll keep my eyes open (I'll be running the event quite a few more times), but don't hold your breath. As I said, the appearance of the guerrilla unit is keyed to the form'n orders event. It can't appear unless the form'n orders event fires.

I'm not arguing that action should be taken at this point -- my recollections are too scanty. However, it's certainly a straw in the wind. If others start noticing something similar, it'd be time to set up a test scenario with units prone to go into re-org and see if their form'n orders really can be overridden as I've described.
