EXE Error: VISTA

Post by ruskicanuk »

I'm using windows Vista and have attached the dxDiag for my computer. I've also followed the advice on this forum and made sure that Morgan Stream Switcher codecs isn't on my computer. When I try to start the game by clicking on the exe file called awd, it doesn't load and gives me the error message "AWD executable has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". I've also tried to rename the video and sound folders in the dat subdirectory to by-pass any video and to no avail, same error message. I'm not sure if this is a vista-problem or something else... I've read everything and tried everything and really want to play on Vista (it works find on my other computer which is XP). Please help! Thanks.

I don't have any ideas at the moment. I hope Joel takes a look at the DxDiag, other than looking for Morgan Stream Switcher I don't know what to do with them, to tell the truth.

There are reports of successful operation with Vista: tm.asp?m=1558699

Did you do a fresh install on the Vista machine? If you just copy over then it won't work.

Yea, I read the threads where people say it works fine with Vista. In fact, my other games work fine on it for some reason on my GGWAW AWD doesn't. Too bad because I freaking love this game and whoever of you designed this deserve kisses from Pamela Anderson. Perfect balance between historical realism, strategy and complexity. The AWD turns a great game into an essentially perfect one (with the bombardment changes, naval movement changes, etc). I have definitely got my moneys worth on this one and it made up for the crappier Crown of Glory that I bought from Matrix ;-)

I didn't copy it - I reinstalled my original version (downloaded from matrix games) which works great on XP. I am switching to Vista for other reasons. Anyways, if anyone has any ideas for fixing this so I can get back into the game I would much appreciate it. I have tried everything I can. I can give you my phone number if someone is feeling particularly charitable. Actually, I'm not sure what the support policy is, but @40ish per game I doubt you guys can afford much of it :-) Anyways, let me know if you can think of anything.

According to your DxDiag, you don't actually have any drivers installed for your video card. It's trying to use the "Standard VGA" drivers. I'm pretty sure that's your problem. Grab the latest Vista drivers for your card, install, reboot and see if that works.
