Campaign History Database

Post by Scouters »

As much as I love playing these wonderful games, I also enjoy re-living them and documenting the exploits (or disasters) of my forces. I once played a campaign in Steel Panthers where my core force was a panzer company. I kept a spreadsheet that had a list of each officer/NCO commanding each tank. After each battle I would add a column documenting how many kills each tank obtained and documented any truly heroic acts or tragic deaths. At the end of the campaign it was great to review the spreadsheet and see the progression of tanks and units. Some officers would arrive as fresh recruits only to become casualties within a short time. A rare few were present through the entire campaign and accumulated impressive scores.

Is it possible to incorporate something similar into WITP? I would love to have a database that documents the exploits of my troops. I’m thinking primarily of ships, but I suppose bases could also be included. I thought that perhaps the easiest way to do it would be to save each discrete battle report from the AAR and then link it to each ship that participated in the battle. So, when you reviewed each ship it would have a hyperlinked list of each battle it participated in. Clicking on the link would bring up a box showing the AAR text of that battle. By the end of the war, each ship would have a list of battles that would capture its role in the campaign. You could throw in addition data in the ships database entry, such as how many hits it obtained on different types of enemy targets (ships, planes, subs, base bombardments, etc.) Other information would include the date the ship entered the theatre, when it was repaired/refitted, and when it was sunk or sent out of the theatre.

I can imagine that, at the end of a long and difficult campaign, many people would love to have a permanent record of the conflict. You could peruse the database and find those few heroic ships that survived against all odds or performed feats of battle beyond expectation. I know that this is superfluous to the actual gameplay (and may not even be feasible), but it would definitely increase my enjoyment.

Thanks,

That would be a really interesting feature. I always wish I could remember what had happened when through the whole game without having to keep a log of my own, slowing down my progression through the game. It should be pretty simple to dump each ship and its location every time it enters port or engages in battle off to some file, and build on it from there.

At a simpler level I always hated that in PacWar you couldn't get a quick list of ships names that had been sunk. How detailed are the planned reporting features that have been worked up or considered?
