Black Box Explosions

Is it just a vista thing or does anyone else get a black square box over the target when hits occur? This happens 100% of the time for me. What should I be seeing? I do occasionally see a little green asterix like symbol inside the black box. Id imagine im suppose to just see the green thingy over the target and not the black box??

The control that plays the green explosion does not support transparent animations, so we went with a black background to help it blend in better with the rest of the game.

My computer or graphics card must be too fast then or something as I almost never see anything but a black box...
