A funny thing happened to me while playing Harpoon

Post by MarkShot »

Perhaps this isn't as odd as it sounds. I often find that my interest tends to move in what on the surface appears to be non-linear paths.

So, I acquired Harpoon3 and began to learn the game and play a few of the basic scenarios. I also got a couple of used strategy guides - the H2 guide by Dille and Basham is truly excellent.

Anyway, I played a little bit of sub warfare in H3. However, I found that it left me a little dissappointed. I wanted more: broadband, narrow band, TMA, ... So, I found myself after many years going back to play Sub Command (also bought a new copy of Dangerous Waters at a great price of $10 USD from NWS).

Well, I still intend to play H3 as there is just so much content there, but once I got started with all those goblin contacts, I just had to be at the tip of the spear in a hands on kind of way.

That ever happen to anyone else?

I have similar things happen. Playing Harpoon has caused me to get my Naval Wargames out again. SOPAC and Sixth Fleet to name a couple. I enjoy setting them up and puching the counters around. I also have the original Harpoon boardgame by GDW.

Actually, the more time I spend time with H3, SC, and DW, the more I feel that the games compliment each other very well. Much of the strategy stuff which I have read for H3 in the manuals or the Dille/Basham book has turned out to be illuminating for SC/DW as well. In the meantime, SC/DW well illustrated many concepts that from an H3 perspective which are left mainly as abstractions such as: active vs passive sensor utilization, the complexities of ocean conditions and sonar performance, time need to develop a solution to target a hostile platform, the need to partition patrol areas for subs, ...

Actually, Harpoon models quite well most of the aspects you are mentioning. (With the possible exception of complex ocean conditions).

Must admit I've been playing more Jane's 688I lately.

So yeah, I guess it does increase the interest.
I don't work here. I just collect the glasses to get a beer quicker.
