PTO2
There were many parts of this game I really liked. Production control and the movement. I did not like the combat system or the monthly stratagy sessions (I liked the idea not the system)Originally posted by Zakhal

I was always being stuck with silly mission objectives. (early war American being forced to attack rather then defend-Japan not declaring war on everyone at once or dates that were impossible to work with and then having to ignore the Southern resource area but attacking Dutch Harbour or something) I miss Koei I liked a lot of their games. (Uncharted Waters, Gangis Khan etc) I still have them on my harddrive (I still have a 5 1/4 and 3.5 floppy drives on this machine I built several months ago)

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

Action Stations is still a fun game. One benefit of the current hardware is the turns are practically instantaneous (I can remember running in on 286's where it took up to 15-20 minutes to run some of the turns). With all the bugs (many of which were known) it is fun. I just wish that it would have sold enough to have come out with the 'repaired' (second version) of it. Ah, well.

Memories... PTO2, Battles of the SoPAc and GNB II and III were great games. Actually GNB II was my very first PC game and the only reason why I bought my trusty old 486 back in `94, since there was no Amiga verison of this game. Too bad, GNB series no longer runs on my actual P4 / XP system. I'm so glad there is a tool to get PacWar running on XP. But it is even farther back to the roots: I occasionally use a C64 emulator to play ... yes, Guadalcanal. Oh, and Crusade in Europe, still one of the best ETO games. But I guess all of them will be honorably discharged when UV is on my desk. Well, PAcWar might be called back to duty, I suspect.

Board games
I was a wargame nut in the eighties. I was even in a wargames club. (played rugby and almost made provincials but wasn't serious enough...got a lot of ribbing from my rugby buddies for being a wargame geek but I could drink them under the table , an asset in those circles, and clotheslined them during practice matches so that geek comment was short lived, heehee) Here is a list of a few I enjoyed most. Ironbottom Sound (Quarterdeck Games), Pacific War, a big bastard (Victory Games), Flattop, another big bastard (AH), Bismarck (AH), Star Fleet Battles(Task Force Games), Destroyer Captain (QG), Carrier Strike and Tokyo Express, both excellent solitaire games (VG), Wooden Ships and Iron Men (AH), Squad Leader (AH), Stalingrad (AH), Submarine (AH), Tobruck (AH).
I was also a big Gary Grigsby nut. Lets see...Guadalcanal Campaign, North Atlantic '86, Bomb Alley, War in Russia, Kampfgruppe, Warship, War in the South Pacific (only played for a few months then the floppy failed and could not get a new copy:( ). Also bought PacWar, but never really got into it because it was not user friendly in my mind. Blasphemy!!!:D

Cool, I'm at work doing some mailing stuff and just found out that we have a professor TANAKA at my university. Let's see if there is a Yamamoto, too.
Ah, better quit rambling.

Re: Board games
Ahh, nothing like nostalgia. Ron, if you or anyone else is interested, Streets of Stalingrad is being re-released by a company out of Toronto. I don't have the space right now for a game of this size, but it sure looks interesting.Originally posted by Ron Saueracker

North Atlantic '86 was the first wargame I ever played, I was 12 years old and I played that thing ragged. Its amazing that even without any graphics, many of those games were able to deliver tension and drama just with scrolling text.
Remember the feeling watching the report of a group of AS-6 missiles that had made it past your Tomcat CAP?
AS-6 missiles approaching CV-Kennedy....
AS-6 destroyed::::::
AS-6 jammed))))))

AS-6 HITS CV-KENNEDY!!!!!
Always a nailbiter!

Barticus,
Yeah I remember "Streets". In fact I still have my original.
Speaking of old monsters, what about Drang Nach Osten/Fire in the East or Unentschieden/Scorched Earth. Still got them as well.
Also as great monsters include Vietnam, Campaign for North Africa and the War in the East/War in the West games. Actually played War in the East/War in the West for about five years, great fun.
What was you first wargame? Mine was Gettysburg (AH) first played in 1970.

Many old systems available.

My e-troops don't unload OVER THE BEACH anymore, see:
Amphibious Assault at Kota Bharu
TF 85 troops securing a beachhead at Kota Bharu, 51,75
whew! I still feel better.

Ron,
I would really like the opportunity to take you on in Streets or just about any other game. I travel a lot, so the timing always sucks.
Do you have a copy of ADC, if so these type of games can be played PBM.
BTW ever play at Carleton U in the late 70's early 80's.

The only board games I've left are Pacific War, Panzer Armee Afrika, Star Fleet Battles 1 and 2, Flight Leader, Destroyer Commander. All are bookcase games. My other games I gave to my nephew, along with my old Apple IIe and my Gary Grigsby stash in the hope that he would develop an interest in gaming and I could "hang out" with him online (he is in Moncton, NB). Alas, he likes the silly arcade style first person shooters and fantasy crap. Developed a hint of mint, too, I'm afraid to say. Unless I become family oriented soon, the odds of continuing my surname past his generation are next to nil. Of thirteen nieces and nephews, he is the only one with my last name.
I played at Nepean HS. Never played at Carleton, but between my Machiavelli courses (I was Ottawa U but took courses during the summer at Carleton to speed up my arrival at destination nowhere) I hung out at Roosters and Oliver's, destroying keg after keg of Black Label, playing Euchre and Bridge, and trying everything I could to nail my Bridge partner Cindie (why else would a young guy play Bridge?). Dated her subsequently for a year or so and then she told me she was BISEXUALLY ORIENTED and I knew her best friend well.....UGLY!!! Haven't played Bridge since!;)

Hmmmm, let's see now. My first wargame was Tactics II, then came, in no particular order, Blitzkrieg, Arab/Israeli Wars, Squad Leader and all the gamettes, Panzer Leader, Panzer Blitz and Chainmail.Originally posted by Kadste

Of all of them, I probably played Squad Leader and Arab/Israeli wars the most.

First dose
Bismarck by AH. I was into the advanced game in a few weeks, not for the faint of heart. The gunfire resolution tables reminded me of the TFTs used for artillery applications.
Ahhh...the tractor factory. SL was a great game but the ASL was starting to become a bit much. The dawn of the computer age was upon us and playing them was becoming more enjoyable than leafing through pages upon pages of rules.
