Increasing the supply of a strategic base?

Post by Dili »

I am faced with a problem in Alexandria/Suez. While at start Alexandria/Suez had not much supply to sustain an Army in mid-late 42 it started to grow to a big hub supplying the reinforced 8th Army, training forces and and even units of USAAF. As far as i know it is impossible to increase the supply of a base. An idea i came up is to make it it appear big uselless 0 knots depot ships with supply there to simulate the increase in level of supply? Good idea? bad?

You can create a base that generates increasing supply by giving it a number of disabled resource centres and oil centres, along with enough HI centres to process all of the output of the resource/oil centres assuming that they are all repaired. The output of the base will slowly increase over time as the disabled centres are repaired.

Note that to allow the disabled centres to repair you will need a lot (10,000?) of supplies at the base, so you need to make that possible as well. The repairs consume a lot of supplies as well - 1,000 - so you should make sure that the base (or nearly bases) generate a large amount of supplies to start with.

You can look at the way I set up US supply (in the bases on the US mainland) in the CHS mod to see how it is done.

This concept - which Andrew not only describes above but invented (I think) - is used big time in RHS - mainly (but not exclusively) in North America. It works very well - and it works regardless of wether humans or AI runs the side. I feel it is safe to endorse its use. But test to be sure you have all the settings and assignments right.

Thanks for that idea but I am more confortable, or i think it is easier to setup, if my idea could work since i can make supply arrive when i want. Now my question is:

1- if the ship coming with full supply gets that supply from the place where(Suez) it arrives which will negate my idea.

2- will get supply from general supply production.

3- will get that supply from outside production system like for example Ki 44 that the game can make arrive before production starts.

Of course i am thinking that ships would be unmoveable depots with 20000t or more and would be called Horn Africa convoy supply 1,2,3 etc.

I believe you can have an LCU arrive with a huge about of supply, it will return it back to the base - kind of like what happens in an invasion - AKs off load tons of supply so the LCUs have 4x the amount they need or more and after the base is taken, the supply ends up back at the base.

With the single wierd exception of the Japanese replenishment TF (TF 2 or 3502 in the location file) - all ships start the game unloaded. IF set to load a UNIT - they will load the unit and cargo from a port IF that port has the specified unit and supplies to load. The TF will even load the unit at sea - if the unit is "swimming" in its start hex! [CHS has or at one time had such a TF/unit combination] In no case does a ship get fictional supplies from the air: all supplies come from a location - and no ship actually starts loaded (although Japanese tankers start with full loads of fuel - which is the opposite problem - they start mid ocean after refueling KB but still have full tanks! to which end RHS removed some of the tankers and lets them show up after they returned to Japan IRL.]

This is not something to start with game start. It will be for late 1941 to 1943 when allies start to get more supply in Alexandria.

Why is it the opposite problem?
Btw this will not only be for supply but also for fuel. I need that after late 1941 start to increasing supply and fuel in Suez. I can use the Andrew Brown idea or have a more controllable way with depots ships arriving if they work.

It is the opposite problem because a force of tankers cannot appear mid ocean with full tanks - particularly after refueling a major task force (more than once). So it is also a problem - one which is only addressed by RHS as far as I know (by holding back the right fraction of cargo capacity in terms of absent tankers).

It does not matter when a ship appears - it appears empty. It does not enter with a cargo. Only at the start of the game may it appear in a TF - there is a code problem if you assign a TF a later date. Ships entering the game are not going to give you more supplies or fuel. But more industry being repaired up - it comes up one point per location per day if there is sufficient supply - WILL do that for you.
