My opinion

In Hornet Leader PC, you command a squadron of the U.S. Navy’s elite F/A-18 Hornet Strike Fighters! You select the pilots and arm the aircraft based on real-world mission briefings. Once you reach your objective, you evaluate threats, and do what needs to be done to destroy the target!

My opinion

Post by CptWaspLuca »

I must be honest: after some playing I'm not very satisfied about the PC version, too many limits, graphical glitches and bugs and too less features and options... Just my 2 cents. I say this as a Dan fan and supporter, I own the Vassal version and I'm ready to buy or preorder a physical version: I love Hornet Leader.

I see you are still working on this PC version, but at this moment I'm not happy about it.
I remarked some troubles in other threads, but I just find this product is not complete; and as a reviewer I know this happens rather frequently in the latest Matrix games...

Dan is a very talented person and HL a great, great game. The best games I own are from Matrix games. So I'm still hoping... version 1.2 maybe?

We made some concessions and changes, and features additions and cuts based on budget, time and other considerations. Of course, over time (assuming it does ok) we'll continue to add things to it, make requested changes here and there, and fix little glitches. So as it is its a pretty solid game, but it will get even better over time.

I'd even say with the 1.1 patch its quite less buggy than most early versions of strategy games (perhaps including some Matrix games), and is fairly decent with flexibility and options. Is it perfect? Probably not. But that's why we're here and wanting to make it better.

I happen to disagree, but I've also not played the Vassal version.
Obviously a PC Version is a much more difficult endeavor than a Vassal version and as such may always be more limited but with other obvious benefits.
I will say though that you could probably do a better job at trying to explain your reasoning for your statement. The other posts you've made really are mostly all really minor points (Like the lack of more campaign stats being tracked). etc.

Given that I do like Hornet Leader so much, I'd be curious to know what all is missing and/or lacking vs. the Vassal version or in general that would make the game even better..

Thank you for your response, it's a nice (and uncommon) thing to have kind words after a criticism. I understand quite well budget and time constraints (I'm a sw engineer), and I'm sure you will improve the product.
My points are:
- Interface is slow and some very important information (as altitude) is missing
- In game saving is really needed
- Given the type of game I really miss windowed mode
- I was expecting some in game description of the enemy assets, or some colour photo of them
- I disagree with some unrealistic design decisions, not present in the original rules. See the thread tm.asp?m=1585783&mpage=1&key=&#1596863
- There are still some bugs and the game crashed (v. 1.10v2)
- The impact of the campaign track on the mission should be made more evident in the interface; I think the bonuses are already added in the mission selection screen, but this is transparent to the player and not very clear
- Some tedious graphical glitches are present in the pilot selection screen and in the mission screen
- You can't minimize the game during a mission! ALT-TAB give you a chance to open full screen applications but you can't see the desktop...
- Total lack of configurable options: this is the first time I don't have the option to change music or sound effects volume of a game
- I can suggest some interface changes: usability can be really better.

Continue to take in consideration criticisms, you will have a better game and a more happy customer base. I'm still an Hornet Leader fan, and I hope to see a lot of expansions for this game... so it's natural I want it better :D

Keep up the good work

Luca

Just to add some more feedback, I find a couple problems real frustrating in an otherwise enjoyable game.

First - the extremely slow response of the game. This combined witht he queueing up of clicks is _real_ frustrating. I lost an entire round of combat from the slow pilots due to q queued click. I had clicked onthe proceed button to go to the next phase (bandit response or whatever it is called). Nothing happened, so I clicked again. Suddenly I was in the homebound events screen...

Especially frustrating since I needed only 2 more hits on the target to get a win, and my planes easily would have done it. Goes from earning 3 VP to 0 vp. ARGH!

Second - the lack of feedback for what is going on. A lot of times I can select a pilot but nothing happens. Or I can't tell if a supression has worked or failed...

I don't have that old of a computer - especially considering the lack of animation in this game. I can not understand the extreme lag... (I have a 2.6 ghz single core hyper threading pentium cpu - an HP a260n system, upgraded to 1 gb of ram.)

Third - I don't understand why the game isn't moddable. This just cries out to allow mods for user designed campaigns, targets, bogeys, weapons... the list goes on. [&:]

Fourth - some kind of extended campaign and generated pilots (rather than a fixed list) would be _real_ nice [:D]

Just my $0.02 (closing in on 3 cents US now :-)

rl-

You can see the results of suppression attempts on the top right above the weapons loadout section, it only stays there for a couple seconds before the next computer attack is made.  You can also see each weapon's attack roll next to the weapon itself.
