Help for a would be SPWaWer

Post by Gerry4321 »

Hello All:

Need your help. I play ASL and love it. But I am searching for a computer wargame also. Have tried Combat Mission but still looking.

Downloaded SPWaW. When it's the computer's turn so much is happening that I cannot keep up. Is there a way to pause it or slow it down? What choices do I have for input when the computer is going... As you can see my mind is still somewhat with boardgames. But I am hoping I will like some computer wargame.

How do I know how many shots each unit still has in each turn?

Question: For the tutorial scenarios it says see the text file and follow along. Where are these textfiles and how do I know which one goes with each tutorial scenario

Thanks for you help.

Hi Gerry, and welcome to the game. :)

Don't know what you mean by 'fast' during the AI turn, but you can try to change the "message delay" settings in the Preferences screen. You can make it so slow you get plenty of time to refill coffee between each shot. ;)

In the middle of the status bar at the bottom of the screen, you can clearly see how many shots you've still have left for each weapon slot.

I.e. 4:3:2:0 would mean 4 shots for weapon 1, 3 for weapon 2 and 2 for weapon 3. If you need to know what weapons they are, right-klick the unit to see the unit screen. Remember, if your unit is suppressed, they won't fire as many shots. Rally them with the "R" key.

The manual is located in the install directory of SP:WAW. Flip it up, or search for "manual.pdf". Each tutorial is described in there, except for the bunker busting one. By then you're on your own. :)

Hope it helps!

ASL fan eh...

You will be happy to know we have a very vocal ASL mob in here Gerry (myself being likely obvious).

Depending on your interests with respects to computer games, wander around and check into Close Combat here and there, it has it's merits. It is likely evolving into Close Assualt (under development).

Then check into The Campaign series from Talonsoft also a very ASLer type of game experience. They are also known as East Front II, West front, and Rising Sun.

You miiiiiiight have a chance at getting a copy of WatchTower the Pacific Mega Campaign for Steel Panthers. Don't delay, you might not get a chance tomorrow.
If fate finds you locating the Mega Campaign Lost Victories grab it, you will not be very kind to yourself later if you miss the chance to get one of the remnant supply copies of this one.

There are lots of computer wargames out there, but you are NOT going to find one as good as Steel Panthers, and hey its free!
I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

Thanks Belisarius. I was looking at a manual I had downloaded before the game and it did not have these tutorials. So I used one of them today and it did help. I am obviously just beginning but it seems you can do a few things with one unit, move on to another unit, and then come back and do some more actions with the first unit (if it is still capable).

Thanks Les the Sarge. Where can one buy the Mega Campaigns you mentioned - I am mostly interested in Lost Victories and the Desert campaign. Thanks for your thoughts on the other games.

Take care,

Gerry

Chips and Bits has them according to some. You have to dig it seems.

But you might not be in luck :(

But I think Watchtower is still in supply. I give it two thumbs up easily.

Hi Gerry, and welcome in here; I'm sure you'll get hooked soon, both by the game and this community: both are the best around :)

I'm very surprised to hear you have not the tutorials in your manual:

what version of the game do you have?
and what version of the manual? It should read 5.0.
If you have this one, there is a text at page 3 concerning the first generic tutorial, then from page 81 on, you have texts for the more specific ones: artillery, engineers, etc.

If looking for the megacampaigns, visit the Matrix store first to see if anything's still available, then hit the retailers link and look for the most conveninet for you/your location.

Hello Resisti:

Yes I have V5.0 of the manual now and the tutorials are really helpful. Somehow I previously downloaded a much shorter, and I assume older, version.

Unfortunately I may be hooked!

Take care,

Gerry

SPWAW again

Post by Gerry4321 »

Hello All:

Haven't got my demo anymore. Wondering if most scenarios are large? That is my recollection when I tried it many years ago. Seemed there would be 20+ vehicles, 10+ squads, etc.?

I would want to play historical scenarios; not ones I could generate.

Thanks in advance.

If you play solitaire when you click on the scenario list it usually gives a description of how large the scenario is(somestimes in minutes) and accompanying that is a general descrip of your duties as commander with the historical story at the end .

Welcome aboard
I will see you on the beach!

Hi Gerry
Welcome to the world of Steel Panthers. This game has ruled my computer gaming time on and off now for some twelve years.

As an ex-ASL player myself, the one thing I will say is; once you are familier with the game and comfortable with everything, look at PBeM. Once you start playing against human opponants what is already a damned good game becomes much, much better,

this game has been on my hard drive since the day it came out and i play it at least 3-4 times a week online,  talk about replay value.  What a game.  It has all the things a ww2 gamer would like.

1)  Has all the ww2 units
2)  Can play email , Hotseat or Live  ( the best[:D])
3)  Great support/fan base      easy to get answers to questions and find players/mods/ whatever you need
4)  I can see and understand the graphics/interface     K.I.S.S.
5)  Fexible game system,  i can play darn near anything from a scenario to a quick battle large or small,  mix units in anyway i want.  or even a campaign. i can even set how effective i wish units to be on the battlefield .
6)  Its Turn Based.     enough said here.

there is just so much here for every type of gamer its no wonder it has lasted this long.[&o]
