Quick update on schedule

Post by Joel Billings »

I wanted to let you know that UV is within days of being completed. At that time we will go full steam ahead on WitP. We expect 2 months to get it into a testable form (of course it could take longer). I don't want to guess at how long the testing/development cycle will last.

Yeah thats great news, but two months does seem to be a little bit wishful thinking.

Wishful thinking

Post by Ron Saueracker »

I don't know about that. My guess is that most of the game has been researched and designed and the engine tested (thanks to UV). As posted elsewhere, the AI is what is going to make or break this project. I'm looking forward to witnessing the development of a workable AI.

Yeah I hope so too. My expectations are high for a competative AI. Early reports on UVs AI are good, which is promising.

UV's AI is very tuff and gives me a good run for my money. The Jap AI is very sneaky. Wait till they come down to Port Morseby and do a quick naval raid on your supply ships that are unloading there. The little rotters really put me off balance when it did this. :D

Joel: Having read your reply on the UV forum, any chance of having LAN capability for WitP?

Would you really play over a LAN in real time against another player? Entering orders will take quite a bit of time and even if we allowed simultaneous entry of orders, I can't imagine playing a game where my opponent could take 30 minutes to enter his orders on some turns. Just digesting the combat reports on some turns will take quite awhile. Why would you want LAN capability when it's really a PBEM kind of game?

Good points, Joel. I kind of thought of it as a form of hot seat, except I don't have to worry about the cheatin' scum looking over my shoulder. I have LAN both at home and, of course, at the office. Perhaps there isn't any advantage over PBEM.

Just wanted to know if 2003 is true, or if it is(Hopefully) just an error and Winter 2002 is the correct date.

Greetings, soon we can pack up the UV forum except for AAR's and comments and move our tents over here for the dreaming and nagging the development team. (of course it will be much slower for about 6 months while we fight around the clock at UV.
I only plan on peeking in here once or twice a week till Nov-Dec

Our northeastern US based seasonal calander goes -

Winter = Jan, Feb, Mar
Spring = Apr, May, Jun
Summer = July, Aug, Sep
Fall = Oct, Nov, Dec.

So "Winter 2003" means "Jan, Feb, Mar" 2003 (and we have error bars of about one season on these and you can figure odds it would err forward...)

Predicting game dev time is like predicting how long it takes to find golf balls.

Paul, it would be MUCH clearer to say "1st quarter, 2003" than to say "Winter, 2003."

Keep your game development and your balls out of the woods and they'll be easier to find. :)
