I would like to get the latest patch/s, scenarios and the best map and ship graphics for WitP before I start playing, but there is so much available it is confusing to a newbie. I have looked at Andrew Brown's site which is intiguing!

I am familiar with the game system as I have been playing WPO for more than a year.

The patch available is the 1.806 (but before installing it you need to intall the 1.804 which is comprehensive).
About maps and mods,....well, there is plenty of them, for all tastes!
I suggest starting with Andrew Brown's ones. These maps can be played along with stock scenarios or with the CHS(combined historical scenarios) which most people are already using.
Then, for the true lovers of witp and realism, there is the RHS, which is a mod (well, actually more than one mod) that uses a foto-realistic kind of map.
 
It's just upon you to chose. Many people argue that the stock scenarios are far from being realistic, so give a try to the CHS or the RHS

If you are going to stick with the stock game for awhile, you might give Subchaser's maps a try. His maps have symbols that represent the different resource items and where they are located. It really let's you see the important areas.

The RHS maps look great!; however, the bases don't appear in the proper land hexes.

Who can tell me what I did wrong or didn't do? Or better yet how fix it? I'm confused about the map versions; RHS spraut v7.791 hex panel, RHS spraut v7.791 non hex panel etc.

Also, a few of the aircraft have the wrong graphic...

Go in the designers forum...there you'll find people who will help you with RHS
