Grognard or n00B ?

...Charles S. Roberts, the founder of Avalon Hill, happened to see a 1959 Life magazine article on Rand Corporation, which featured pictures of some of their games. Noticing the hex grid on some of the maps, Mr. Roberts thought it a good idea. He used to tell the story of the interview about his famous CRT by the government as well, although I am not aware of any evidence supporting that particular story.

1966 - A popular year on this forum. Yes, I remember the CRT.
 
First game was Panzer Leader aound 1978, then Tobruk, Panzer Blitz and Midway. After that pretty much every AH or Victory games title except TLD unitl ASL came out (I never got into that even though I liked the original SL and had the first few expansions).

Longest day, I think is one of the most elegent Monster games I've played, easy to learn hard to master, simulates the battlefield very well. Would make a great computer game!!

It is a computer game. It is called Panzer Campaign: Normandy by HPS Simulations. It is a pretty good game, but could be difficult in PBEM.

I thought that Atomic Games V for Victory series (published by Avalon Hill) did a very nice job on the Normandy landings (Gold, Juno, Sword covered the British/Canadian beaches and another one whose name I forget covered the US beaches - or was it just Utah Beach?).

Skyros, I still have Terrible Swift Sword. What a spectacular game! (Gettysburg on the regiment level).

The Antietam game (Gleam of Bayonets) in that series was good too....it's in my game closet along with about 7 others from that series including Terrible Swift Sword.

I finished Gleam of Bayonets solitare too. Fun little game.

Someone claimed to have played CNA somewhere, once, or at least some turns of it, didn't they? What CNA needed was computerisation of the detail tracking - and then it would be like playing........ WitP!

A friend and I started that darn game. We played 1 turn and 2 op stages (2/3 of a turn) before I moved out of town for college. I still like it. Gonna play it someday if I can find someone crazy enough to play.

Well, I have played it 3 times.

1) With Ted, he only got 2 beacheads and we called that one (Game lasted a couple hours)
1) Second game with Ted, Played until the Allies broke out of Normandy (9 months real time once a week)
3) Played myself both sides until Allies broke out, (3 months real time)

Played War in Europe twice (long game) Found an unpunched copy at a Goodwill store for 5 bucks!
World in Flames (3 times) very fun was a team game with 5 players (5 months)
SPI's Central front series (team game) about a month
GDW's Third World War series (team game) at a game convention in San Luis Obisbo
Avalon hills Russian Front (11 months, Ted as Russians) Most exciting game we ever played
Gamers Guderian's Blitzkreig linked with Enemy at the Gates (long game)

When I worked at Vandenberg AFB had the Central Coast Wargamers over at the house for team games,
My garage was converted to a play room where I had lots of Acrylic covered tables!
Lots of other games but those mentioned above are the Monster games we played.

Ahh, The Gamers games. I have all their operational level, tactical level and RSS with a smattering of the others. Dean Essig has wonderful insight in the development of those systems. I recommend them.

I go back to Tactics II and the old square hex Gettysburg from Avalon Hill. Born in 54. I still play ASL. This is the first year I have missed ASL Octoberfest in a decade.

Let's see if I can remember this.

3 - D moves back
4 - A moves back
5 - D wins
6 - D wins

You think air battles are bloody in WITP. Nothing like losing Moscow on one dice roll....[:D]

Yes, I do know what a CRT is. Born 1956. First wargame was SPI’s Year of the Rat in 1973, about the 1972 Communist offensive in Vietnam. I had subscribed to S&T, but ended up receiving my first issue weeks before I received Napoleon at Waterloo, their introductory game.
