WWII Scenario Ideas

Post by kevinkins »

OK given the nature of the game - adjacent hex combat with nice supply and antisupply - what scenarios would you like to see designed?

With all the resourses thrown at Kursk that might be a good one.

That's an interesting question. [:)]

WWI:
The Somme (second battle)
Ypres

WWII:
Kursk would be great.
Stalingrad!
Sealion.
Monte Cassino.
Ardennes.
2nd Lt. George Rice: Looks like you guys are going to be surrounded.
Richard Winters: We're paratroopers, Lieutenant, we're supposed to be surrounded.

The battle for Narvik. Especially the fighting at bjoernefjell. (translation bearmountain. it would be a closer tactical game than the usual strategic level things are at as the whole map would be the mountain instead of just one tile on the map.) I might some day make this scenario if I get the free time. (Yes im Norwegian.)

If I can ever fully learn the editor, what I'd like to convert (board wargame to AT) is:

1) Fortress Europa (AH)
2) Third Reich/Prados' Third Reich (AH/AP)
3) Blitzkrieg (AH) - a true rendition
4) Ardennes '44 (GMT)

And by these, I mean as faithful a recreation as possible, down to each counter and hex by hex representation of the map.

What Gary just said. Especially Blitzkrieg aka Blue vs Red (perhaps it's already been done in PT and can be adopted?) and Ardennes '44 (GMT 2003).

This would work best with the feature suggested a while back by ___ (?? I'll add the thread link later) to define certain Formation Types or Assemblages and have them "locked" by the Scenario Editor. Otherwise you'd have to play using a Gentleman's Agreement or something.

Board wargames I'd like to convert:

SPI's Panzergruppe Guderion
AH Fortress Europa
AH Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

Incidentally converting boardgame maps is easy with the overlay feature. Lay the board game map on the floor and take a picture looking straight down over it. Crop the image as close to the hex borders as possible and then use the overlay feature in the editor to superimpose it over the editor map. I did this for Panzergruppe Guderion's map and it fit almost perfectly.

I'll be the third who wants to convert AH 3rd Reich board game. I've bee thinking about this a lot and believe that with the events and action cards we could do a very true rep. of this game.

Maybe this could be a group project. Each doing a part of it.... more heads and all that.....

Well, porting AH 3R won't be a very advanced use of AT : it is a very simplified game in fact... But I'd like to see a full "War in Europe" scen from '39 to end of war conceived for AT - ie using all the wonderful possibilities of the editor. Look at the Great War scen, it's pretty impressive, and you already have a usable map (hint [:D]).

I agree, When I first strated watching this forum, Third Reich was the game that came to mind. To me it looks like a natural. The problem would be the AI but maybe it could work.

I'm still slowly working on my first hist. scenario to learn the editor. I'm glad Vic and tweber are have wroe up their guides. I'd be lost with some of the details without them.

I had some Ideas, not really ww2 though
korean war, I did this in pt but the editor had limits
vietnam, mostly beacuse of the really cool gunship unit
perhaps a coldwar europe scenario with loads of armour and tactical nukes(might ruin gamlay, that might the reason there hasn't been any (really)major conflicts scince ww2)

I know it's not WWII, but I think this game engine would be perfect for a Vietnam 1965-1975 a la Victory Games' or even the simpler, but fun No Trumpets No Drums. The fog of war and Viet Cong cat and mouse game would be awesome.

I've a particular fondness for Crete'41, since the Air Assault of Crete AH games was one of my first wargame [8D]
Plus it's a real good situation to see combined arms handling !

Air Assault on Crete (AH) was one of my first wargames as well and I'd love to see a scenario for it and possibly for the (hypothetical) Malta invasion as well. In fact, I redrew the Malta map for a VASSAL (online board wargaming) module if anybody wants to use this image as an overlay for a Malta map:

(image was redrawn with permission from Vance Von Borries)

Oh thanks. I guess it's easier for artist now days - I can use Photoshop and pretty closely recreate what they hand painted back in those days. (Edit: and I use the term "artist" as applied to myself very loosly, I just tinker around and draw what I like to see in wargame maps).

I may try and make this map later tonight just to tinker around. One "issue" that I could see is recreating the Valletta area; I guess that AT would make those all a solid land mass since the hexes are adjacent but I suppose some carefully placed rivers/lakes might reproduce that port area well enough for the game.
