Will WiF make all other WW2 Grand Strategy games obsolete?

Post by Skeleton »

First off, I have been reading and watching and anticipating this game for so long. I want to tip my hat to Steve for his hard work, his patience and for providing updates that are very informative, very timely and very well thought out.[&o] If this game is what it appears to be, I may not purchase another WW2 game again. Time wise, and as a complete novice to WiF, how are the turns broken down; i.e., game wise (seasons, months?). Estimated in real time, how long would it take for one to play the entire campaign solitaire and pbem (with a regular turn rate, say one a day)? Thank you in advance for any information and keep up the great work.

There are few other games that can match WiF and its certainly one of the best ever designed. (Of course the Slaakman Variant will exceed the current ADG design when I submit the oversights on their part).[:'(][:D]

The game is broken down into 2 month turns (Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr, etc.) Each turn has a number of impulses. The Axis and Allies trade off impulses. The number of impulses is variable depending on what weather is rolled and the time of year. Winter turns are generally much shorter than summer ones.

A solitaire game would (I'm guessing) take anywhere from 8-24 hours depending on how new you are to the game and how much time is put into your decisions. PBEM I think it would depend on how often you have to toss the game back and forth (intercepts and naval interceptions and other reactions).

I don't think it will make other WWII games obsolete but I do think that in terms of grand strategy games it will be the best available. So....when are they converting 7 Ages? :)

yeah really. that has online multi-player written all over it, and I'm looking forward to that cuz I'll never be able to assemble a group to play it where I live.

oh, so your Nomads wiped out my nascent civilization, eh? well well too bad we had a reserve of horsepox in that city you pillaged. another great Harry Rowland game. even more fun than trading three salt for a couple spice or whatever, and I loved that game.

Too funny! Nothing quite as funny as a little Zeppelin allusion! Thank you Xenocide for the information, very helpful.

I believe 8 hours is a drastic underestimate. I suspect even a very fast solitaire game would be at least 25 hours.

We have to remember that traditionally in wargaming, "solitaire" means playing oneself. That is most likely to take longer than playing the AI. Also, MWiF is almost certainly going to be quicker to play than board WiF. Having said that, it's a big, complicated game. It'll be worth investing serious time in though.

My experience :
Playing with 4-5 players, the campaign duration is 150 hours for my group.
Playing the computer version solitaire, all sides without AI, was about 2-3 weeks playing 3-4 hours each day.

The game has 36 2-months turns, each turn having a variable number of impulse as this was already said. From my playing experience, there are about 125 impulse per side for the complete game. Playing with my 4-5 players team, an impulse is between 30 mn and 2 hours, with maybe an average around 1 hour. 2 hours impulses are rare.
