AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/21/41

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Amboina at 39,73

Japanese Ships
AP Yamafuku Maru
AP Daitei Maru, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Allied Ships
BB Prince of Wales
BC Repulse
CL Danae
DD Vampire
DD Vendetta
DD Tenedos
DD Electra
DD Express

Force Z is still causing trouble. Those ships should already looong be sunk as they have been in torp range of dozens of torp bombers so many times it´s just pure luck IMO that they are still afloat. Only Nells/Betties (in small numbers) from level 3 airfields have attacked so far... My transports are surprised and one is sunk by a torp from BC Repulse!! [X(] Repulse carries torps?? No gun fire and the second AP escapes...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First strike that came from Johore Baru at one hex range. 3 Sallies lost so the short range doesn´t help that much... the Brit airforce in Malaya isn´t existing anymore and I expect Swift to evac the remaining undamaged planes...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 4th New Chinese Corps, at 49,37

Japanese aircraft
A5M4 Claude x 32
Ki-27 Nate x 62

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
10 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x Ki-27 Nate bombing at 2000 feet

the Claudes from my baby carriers joined the training attacks at Nanchang. I should have had my baby carriers in the Amboina area to sink Force Z but the attacks of the B-17s that I can´t defend myself from scared my and so the carriers are sitting in Camranh Bay. Will move them out now - far too late though... again something that costs me time, precious time...

sent 3 AKs with supplies to Lunga and an US CV shows up in the Solomons heading North. Nells are on station... very bold move, but Swift is further counting on his luck it seems. Wouldn´t bring a single carrier in range of dozens of Nells at this date, just to hunt some AKs...

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

[8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|]

oh well, two base forces and two small inf units, of which two had to retreat before already, defending Kuala Lumpur. I order a shock attack to pursue the defenders with my tank brigades. Now the shock after looking at the base: Ressource center is 100% damaged!! NO, NOT 100 RESSOURCE POINTS - 100 PERCENT!!!

I know there´s the myth that it could be that shock attacks result in higher damage to captured bases, but I have seen so many shock attacks resulting in no damage at all that I never gave a damn about it. But how unlucky can I be when 600 out of 600 ressource points are damaged?? One of the biggest - and desperately needed - ressource centers on the map is destroyed. Should I already surrender? When the same thing happens to Palembang´s oil fields then it´s game over in mid 44 due to the lack of ressources and oil.. [8|][8|] If I would conquer all of China, then I would still not get as many ressources as I could get from an undamaged Kuala Lumpur...

100% damage... ridicoulos...

while still a pain, the sub attacks are decreasing and Swift already complained that he has to already rearm the subs as well that if I had sunk all the old BBs at Pearl he would trade that for all the subs from Manila that could be going after my shipping. I´m happy with the situation but if I could sink ALL BBs at Pearl then I would trade that for two dozen undamaged subs at Manila! [;)]

Midway is the joke of the year... [:@] while I can accept the outcome so far, this round was pretty much just an idiotic example in what direction the game can go... A couple of heavy bombardments by BBs, CAs... KB launched a full strike on both the port and the ground units... I have landed a unit that has 10 times more assault value than the defenders... I lost already a lot of ships to CD guns and one of my BBs is badly shot up by CD gunfire.

Well, what am I supposed to do? Bring 3 divisions to overcome an atoll that starts out with 16 assault points, that wasn´t reinforced and probably is low on supply also... I don´t know what was needed in real life, but speaking of assault points, then I have a 10:1 advantage... not to talk about all the support from see and air...

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
4 x B5N Kate bombing at 6000 feet

after this attack also the DD Ward is sunk easily with 11 bombs... only DD Tucker escapes. With the two ASW DD-TFs sunk a couple of turns ago, Swift has lost some 15 DDs and 2 CLs in the engagements around Johnston Island. KB loses perhaps 10 bombers in the process... [&o]

Bold, but I can´t understand those moves... perhaps he could have sunk 2 or 3 ships but not stop the invasion, so the danger of losing the whole TF was far to high for what he could gain. He gained nothing and lost (nearly) everything...

one of the sunken CLs:

USS Concord (CL-10), 1923-1947
USS Concord, a 7050-ton Omaha class light cruiser, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Commissioned in November 1923, late in that year and into 1924 she made her shakedown cruise through the Mediterranean Sea and around Africa. For the next several years, Concord mainly served with the Atlantic-based Scouting Fleet, making occasional visits to the Pacific to participate in major U.S. Fleet maneuvers. Her homeport was changed to San Diego in 1932, and she operated mainly in the Pacific after that. As U.S.-Japan tensions increased in 1940, she moved with the Battle Fleet to the advanced base at Pearl Harbor.

When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, Concord was on the West Coast to undergo an overhaul. She served in the southern Pacific beginning in February 1942, escorting reinforcement convoys and patrolling off Central and South America. She was flagship of the explorer Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd in September-November 1943, during his survey of Southeastern Pacific islands. An accidental gasoline explosion during this cruise damaged the ship and took the lives of 22 of her crew.

Following repairs, Concord was transferred to the northern Pacific, where she spent the rest of World War II patrolling, interdicting enemy shipping and conducting bombardments of facilities in the Kuril islands area. During September 1945, just after the end of the fighting, she supported the occupation of northern Japan. Concord passed through the Panama Canal in October 1945 and was decommissioned late in the year at Philadelphia. She was sold for scrapping in January 1947

the same goes for flying in those aircraft... while it was a good idea, he should have moved them out last turn, when he knew my invasion will happen this turn with a follow on shock attack. With the disaster of Midway in mind I also unloaded a regiment with the nav guard unit tasked to take Johnston. The nav guard would have been easily enough against 2 adjusted assault... I think this is the 5th or 6th heavy bombardment of Midway... another BB bombardment next turn... Hi Castor.  Something that may clear up the reductions in AV you are seeing: defensive bonuses (like the x2 for jungle or adjustments for forts) are applied as a reduction to the attacker rather than a multiplier to the defender.  Also HQ's only help in attacks on bases for which they are prepared (no effect in non-base hexes).  Priobably doesn't explain all the results, there are likely some bad rolls in there as well, but in most battles the attacker will find his AV adjusted downwards as there are many opportunities for defensive bonuses and few for the attacker.

yes, but the attack occured in a clear hex, so no multiplier. Also there can´t be any forts as the brigades have just recently crossed the river. Oh well, while I can´t understand many things it´s still good to see you can´t just count up your assault points and be sure to kick your enemy around if you have xy assault points... [:D]

well, what can I say... the game goes super duper, all Allied soldiers are like superman... I think I had enough "preparation" before the second landing... the best thing to describe what I think about this is:

TF 158 encounters mine field at Singapore (23,50)

an ASW TF... instead of going after the spotted subs that just sit there they lose a ship due to the already looong spotted minefield that even is swept away at the end of the turn...

Japanese ground losses:

Allied ground losses:

all the BS that we post day after day on the forum on what you should and what you should not is really making me tired... there´s no sense in putting heavy nav units into an invasion TF... I did it all the time and the only result I get is a sunk CA due to mine hits...

I once again have to say: "THE DO NOT UNLOAD ORDER IS THE SAME BS AND ONLY WORKING FROM TIME TO TIME JUST LIKE THE FOLLOW UNIT ORDER"!! I really would like to see those bugs fixed...

I was 100% sure that I have set this TF to do not unload and when I checked it it was still on do not unload. I ordered it to Palmyra to completely unload next turn, but instead obeying orders the f***ing game decides to unload at the end of the day... such bugs can end in disasters, just think about 3 divs coming ashore at an atoll against a strong defender and then you see your troops unloading at the end of the day although you have set your TF to do not unload... I have a lot of artillery units here but 2000 casualties are really high. But those are 95% of the HQ units in the lead of the Chinese stack in Sian, so the assault value won´t really be hurt by those bombardments. 2000+ assault points seem to much to try a direct assault. We have ordered a couple of units (including tanks) to surround the city. Perhaps we will take Sian also without a fight if Swift sees our units spreading out... Though it won´t boost our oil supply as in Nikmod Sian has neither oil nor ressources nor HI...

a good day regarding ground combat. Mersing is captured but it seems I only ordered 2 divs and a brigade for an attack as we had only 1000 of the 2000 assault points attacking. With luck we achieve a 2:1 which is enough to see 15.000 Allied troops surrender. 800+ points in ground losses today, now at 3400. Japanese ground losses at 27! [8D]

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

The Dutch defenders from Palembang have been shock attacked back to Teleokbang (sp??). Paras will take the base in the base next to it and then the couple of small units will have to surrender.

as a side note: no troops were unloaded at Palmyra today... [8|] Originally the TF was set to do not unload but last turn they unloaded. I checked the TF and it was still at do not unload, I forgot to set it to unload and voilà: NO TROOPS UNLOADED THIS TURN!!!

Allied ground losses:

Still high casualties but not to compare with the 2000+ we started with. But I´m sure most of the casualties are within the HQs in the lead. With "only" twice the number of troops I´m not sure I want to attack as a 0:1 can easily cost us 5.000-10.000 troops disabled/destroyed and all units start out at 85/100 or lower anyway. So we will try to encircle Sian and then finish the Chinese off at all cost.

Swift isn´t happy with the Blitzkrieg in China and I understand him! I face the same problems against Hortlund when many of my units are still somewhere in the jungle or on mountain hexes off the road. IMO ground warfare should be not included in WITP but it is as it is and I can´t change it. Wouldn´t I face a ground war in Burma, Malaya, Thailand and China later on I wouldn´t go on a big style offensive in China. But I WILL face an Allied counter attack on the ground in 1,5 years at the latest I think and therefore I will try to knock out China! Not completely but I will do my best to really take ground in China to be prepared for the defense later on...

So far the Blitzkrieg in China was the Chinese abanding their bases (Sian and Yenen), retreating on the railroad and we were following them on the railroad at the same speed. I´m really massing units but compared to the Chinese we "only" have a 2:1 advantage and I think 2:1 is expected to be the min. when being on the offense. We will see what will happen in the coming YEAR...

we are attacking two Allied brigades on the railroad in Malaya. Unfortunately they don´t have a base left and it will take forever to see them surrender with us getting lots of squads disabled until then. Will move in some fighters for ground attacks also to speed the process of surrendering a bit.

a bombardment TF goes in to Batavia and even with escorts do not bombard, a DD hits a mine. Will be a gamble if it will make it to the next port... those Allied mines really have a punch...

even though we reconned Batavia a couple of days, the damage to the base isn´t satisfying at all. No CD counterfire though and not a single aircraft at the base either. Half a dozen bases on Java show the aircraft symbol so it will be hard to knock the Dutch airforce out with a couple of hard strikes...
