Does minimizing the game during AI moves make it go faster?

Post by beserko »

Does minimizing the game during AI moves make it go faster? It seems so to to me. Or maybe its the watched computer doesn't load syndrome. But when I play a large map watching the AI count seems to take forever, but when I minimize the game I just wait for the bugle. Any thoughts?

I think it just seems to go faster because you're not watching it. Agree though, it does seem to go faster when you're doing something else :)

It sure seems to for me. I have Vista (sigh) and I thought it might just be a stupid Vista thing. Microsoft seems to have found a way to make everything a little slower in Vista.

I had an issue with one game (random cities) where the AI never quit. I'd sit there and watch it go up as far as AI Step 500. Now matter how long I watched it, it never seemed to complete it's turn but as soon as I minimized it, I'd hear the bugle and could go on. I've only seen this once and suspect the AI got caught in some sort of loop it couldn't get out of. Don't know why minimizing it would have allowed it to complete but it always would complete just a second or two after I minimized it.

Hey Vic! Do you want to way in on this?  I have been playing a huge map all week. Sometimes I don't minimize and I watch the AI count to over 3000! When I minimize I never wait more then a minute. If this is a "feature" am I makeing the AI dumber?

The thing is i cannot replicate this behaviour on my development system... :(

But Ehmm... i am experimenting a bit.. and next version 1.1 might show some improvement here.

Ohhh.. if could tell me: Your system specs are? Do you maybe got Vista?

I just built a new machine. Q6700 quad 4 gigs of RAM 2 EVGA 8800 GTS ASUS P5N-E-SLI. Moderatly overclocked, in SLI. XP home. I'm thinking of saveing a game, timeing it both ways. I'll get back to you.  Oh by the way, this is the only game I have played since I bought it the 1st day it came out. Great work!
