Is Desert Fox Compatable with 7.1?

Post by Krotos »

I purchased both Desert Fox and Lost Victories mega campaigns only to discover that Desert Fox is apparantly forces you to install version 5.0 (SPWaW) along with it. I am currently running version 7.1 and don't want two seperate versions of the game on my drive. My questions are therefore:

1) Is Desert Fox 1941 compatable with SPWaW 7.1?

2) If yes, how to I get it to install to 7.1?

If it is not compatable with 7.1, is there a patch that will make it compatable? If there is not patch that will make it compatable, what the heck is the point in owning it? Moreover, why are these compatability and install issues NOT discussed on the web site? If DF 1941 is not compatable (or can not be made compatable) with v7.1, why is this not clearly stated on the DF web site?

Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

Take a chill pill, it works just fine with 7.1.

My installation here is off the mcna disk updated all the way to 7.1. Your problem is that you need the correct installation sequence to get both your mc installed right. Depending on the age of your mcna disk it came with either 5.0x or 5.3, the lv and watchtower mc come with 7.x?

Unfortunately mcna being the first is not multiinstall friendly, so it must be installed first. The others can overlay it, but you still need to patch the whole thing. Along with the correction patches for different battles and the core.dat fixes.

This is a game that you don't just drop it in and fire it up, some work on the web to add to it will pay off in a better game.

Count yourself lucky you are just now getting the game, some of us have been busy with it since v1.0 (some even longer than that) I can't even count all the beta versions I have when I was helping test versions.
thanks, John.

John G hit this one on the head it's just a matter of proper installation sequence. Install MCNA (yes it's going to back date your SPWAW 5.x) don't worry, after installing MCNA intstall LV again Full install, then apply 7.1 patch and the MCNA and LV patches and you'll be back up to date. No worries

Here's a question...

I have LV and DF also. I bought LV first and am half way through it but I would sure like to take a peek at DF. So, can I backup my save files for my LV game, do the install sequence to get updated to 7.1 (with patches) without losing my LV progress?

For that matter, can I start a DF campaign and play both at the same time?

The save feature is a little funny with the MCs, so I hesitate to do anything that will have me restarting LV for the third time.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, copy your Mega saves to a safe place, and follow the sequence you described. It's imperative that get everything back to the way it was, after everything is back the way it was copy your save files back over. Everything must match the way it was, SPWAW ver, OOB's and updated LV *.dat files. Sound are not necessary to make it work, but still recommended. Delete the steel.prf file located in the MatrixGames\SPWAW\SAVE folder before you restart the game after all the updates are performed. When you adjust anything within the preference screen the game will automatically recreate it. If something isn't right, when you try to run your old save your going to get some sort of corruption which will make all your hard work up till then null and void. Corrputed saves are pretty much unrepairable, so it's always advised to make a backup just in case something goes wrong. Good luck. Let me know when you've succeded. Yes you can play both Mega's at the same time just make sure your create a different save file name from the other. Many of us have all 3 going at the same time which gets tricky. I always name mine for the Mega itself, IE: MCNA, MCLV, MCWT I don't play multiple games of the same Mega so this works well for me.

gmenfan, thanks for the instructions, I'll try it tonight (hopefully) and I'll get back to you if it doesn't work. I've been lucky, technically speaking, so far with all of my various versions of SPWAW, so I think it will work.
