Scenarios for beginners

Post by Ograbme »

I just finished the tutorials and find myself enjoying the game more than I thought I would. Which scenarios would be least taxing of my newbie strategic mind?

Og,
Is there a specific theatre of war you have an interest in? If not, just look about this forum and the links provided...there isn't much you won't find. ;)
As a newbie try scenarios first that state they are small and short (most designers will give you a heads up in the scenario bio if its a small battle or a monster)...then move on to some of the short campaigns that are available. These will help get you ready for "The Show" (the mega campaigns) If you didn't buy a MC I suggest you order one at some point...they are terrific when you think the time has come to really take on the enemy!
Anyway, sorry if this seems a bit vague...but it's just that there are so many fine pieces of work out there, it wouldn't serve them all justice to mention just a few! :)

A suggestion is to get Redleg's monthly "Dirty Dozen" at:

http://redleg.homestead.com/

You have a choice of several months now. Many of the scenarios included in the packs are short and sweet - not meaning they are easy by any means. They will give you a broader view of the possibilities of SPWAW.

Once you get a few of these under your belt, I would try one of the traditional campaigns such as Wild Bill's U2R (Utah to the Rhine) - my non-MC favorite. You learn more, I think, about combined arms when you have to choose the core and support forces yourself. You can restart any of the battles with no problem, even back all the way up and choose a different mix of infantry - armor - artillery. I know I learned a lot more about WAW from this one campaign than all of the stand alone scenarios put together.

I just tried the Utah campaign and, well, cripes.
I bought a Mech Inf company(probably a bit much), an M4A1 platoon, 2 Wolverines, and some arty/FO. I beat off the first wave of halftracks/armored cars and got through the first panzer platoon to the north by the skin of my teeth(no losses, but lots of luck was involved). Then some panzers/panthers appear in the south just as some stugs pop out of the woodwork up north. Theres not enough cover down south to get into Sherman range, so the green coffins get brewed up.
So what sould I have bought/done?

As for stand-alone scenarios, I prefer smaller forces, maybe a company or more of infantry and a platoon of tanks.

I finally beat the first Utah/Rhine campaign mission, but I feel so...dirty. I had to crank my tank toughness way up and turn theirs way down. Sherman rounds were bouncing of half tracks, for crying out loud.

I bought jumbos to start off with because of the better gun. I also had some bazooka teams. Once you know where the attack will come from in the north and the south, set-up the ambush for the stugs and panthers. However, keep pressing on the town and be sure to take it before the battle ends.
