Code Breaking?

Post by Scouters »

Is code breaking modeled in UV? I don't think this would be too difficult. Whenever the Japanese player dispatches a task force there could be a slight chance that the US player would be informed of some or all of the following:

1. Composition
2. Time of departure
3. Site of departure
4. Mission
5. Destination

There could a random delay in receiving the information and built-in inaccuracies.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Scouters

Sounds reasonable

Maybe somebody can specify how US codebreaking skills are incorporated in UV.

'Cause not taking US cryptanalysis capability into account in this game would be like failing to take into account the range, reliability and power of the Japanese Long Lance torpedo.

None of Grigsby's previous titles on this subject modeled codebreaking so I wouldn't be surprised if this one didn't take it into account either.

Codebreaking...

Post by Erik Rutins »

It is not modeled in UV. My understanding is that with the frequent Japanese code changes and the instances of errors that misplaced Japanese ships, the net effect was much less than suspected during the key battles in UV. Hence, it was left out.

I also understand that this is going to be included in War in the Pacific, where for the full scope of the war it of course had a much greater effect.

Intel from codebreaking was modeled in Pacwar on a crude basis - you had 5 opportunities a turn to get more info on TFs, bases, etc.

Get Yamamoto!

For further information on the effect that codebreaking had upon the interception of Admiral Yamamoto in April 1943, go to: http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/wwi ... madies.txt

poor Yamamoto

Poor Yamamoto :( , honorable days gone forever. Remember when Napoleon wandered too close within a musket shot to opposing Austrian Army picket, Austrian officer instead of trying to shoot begged Bonaparte to withdraw.

I read the Japanese changed their codes a few days before Midway and it took the a while to break them again. I will check on that.

code

Post by cpt_Venomous »

actually they were supposed to update code by april 1, then it was postponed till may 1st, then untill june 1st,(apparently some ships were too hard to reach to distribute new code) bunch of slackers *sigh*....
Well sinse another PacWar game is coming out after UV, there shouldnt be code decryption in the game (game would lose balance), why dont just jam into game an entire research tree then.
