Still getting CTDs!!!

Post by Deputy »

I can't believe this is still a problem and none of the patches releaased (I have all of them installed) has adderessed this issue. I haven't played the sim for a long time, and I figured I would give it a try again. I downloaded all the patches (I have the sim on CD) and went into the African campaign. After the scenarios...BAM!!!...kicked out to the desktop. This is the same thing that was happening when I played it last time. Same thing happens in individual scenarions. I have to save after every turn or I lose everything. And I know it's not drivers or computer power. I have all the updated drivers and plenty of oomph to play this game or any other. As a matter of fact, I recently ordered the Shrapnel Games version of Steel Panthers and both their WW2 version and the Modern battles version work great with NO CTDs at all. So why is SPWAW still having these problems???? [&:]

SPWW2/MBT were completely reworked for Windows, which is why you do not have problems with them.

SPWaW is ancient, so you most likely ARE having driver problems, especially if you updated them. It is designed for older systems. Some players have Win 95/98 systems they use to play the game.

Making it 100% modern would take an extensive rewrite of everything, which is obviously not economical for a free game. Matrix has stopped official support and patches for the game. The most recent patches were to correct OOB issues, and minor glitches.

You may still be able to run the game reasonably trouble free with advice from other players. Some specifics on your machine/OS/hardware would be helpful.

I just found the thread in the tech section with folks having problems similar to mine. I apologize for not posting there. Machine is a HP Pavillion DV9000 laptop, 17 inch screen, NVidia Go 7600 video card (512MB) with newest detonator drivers, 2 gig ram, 2 gig Pent Centrino Duo processor, 2 70 gig hard drives (game is installed on 2nd HD away from OS), Win XP Home with all updates.

Only way I've been able to work around the CTD is to constantly save after every turn. A real PITA, but it works. A shame they never fixed this problem. There are a lot of features of SPWAW that I actually prefer over SPWW2. Oh well...thanks for the help. I don't think I will be rolling back any drivers. [;)]

You have a similar system to mine, as far as cards go (I have 1 gig of RAM, and an NVidia 7600 GT-FOC card, but an Athlon 64 3400+ processor). I have had no problems. That is what is really baffling, is where one person faces CTD's, andf another with a similar system doesn't. Never have understood that one.

It seems to happen more in laptops, but that may be an incorrect observation. Maybe something to do with the Duo processor? Dunno.

Deputy: Don't run anything BUT SPwaw and see if problem reoccurs. The Old girl is a memory hog, no matter how much you got she wants more, and like any other female she wants your undivided attention. (She dosen't like to share you with anything else.)    HTH[8D]

Thanks Chief. I'll try shutting down everything and see if that works.
