Maps in SPWAW

Post by Wild Bill »

You'll find at least 75 maps in SPWAW version 4.0.

More than 50 of them are historical. Then there are another 30+ specifically designed as generic maps, or maps you can use in your custom battles.

Now you have options to set the start lines objectives hexes before loading the map. THe game won't change them. Or you can have the standard method or you can ask the computer to randomize these settings for you, either start lines or victory hexes or both.

Being able to set these parts of the map in so many ways is a new feature in Steel Panthers, something you could never do before.

Its a whole new world of SP coming your way.

Thanks WB. What will you guys add next Image Maybe you could set it up so SPWaW version 7 (yeah, right) will balance my cheque book & let the cat out while I'm tied up looking for those snipers that are out to get you.;p OK, so I joke.

I can't think of anything to add to the game, as descibed, that would add significantly to the game play. They say the last 10% takes 90% of the effort, but with games, it seems, there is no LAST 10%, just the next 10%. I think it'll be a while before we need that next 10%.

So, For this last 10% (or does V3 & V4 make 20%), and for all the nasty, sneaky, underhanded & vicious things you've done to us with your scenarios and campaigns over the years, I thank you.

I'm looking forward to that one!! will you be doing one for Juno beach? we Canucks just gotta play ourselves from time to time. 8)

Second question. Do you mind if I put a link to your web page from mine? I've started a site to support "Dreadnaught" once it gets rolling. In the mean time I'm aiming any lost souls to the SPWaW sites.

By all means, Robert! I'd be honored. I tried to get to yours but I keep getting "Page cannot be displayed." I'd love to visit your web site. Can't imagine what the problem is.

Send me the URL or post it here again so I can be sure I'm trying the right one.

Juno...as a matter of fact, that is the map Drake is working on currently. So it should be the next one on my list.

I've noticed on the maps of Juno Beach a little island or land spit just outside of St Aubin. Is that correct? What is it, a tiny island or a piece of the ocean that gets exposed at low tide?

Did you know Frank Donati is a fellow Canuck, as well as Stuart Millis (SPWAW Beta team)...Let me know please about your site URL..Wild Bill

I think I missed a final forslash (/) in my signature file this should work.
http://dreadnaught.home.icq.com/

I did a search and found this:

To the west of Sword Beach, the 3d Canadian Division stormed ashore along the five miles of coast between La Riviére and St.-Aubin-sur-Mer. Neptune planners
had timed the assault on Juno Beach so that the tide would be high enough to cover the offshore reef. Here, as elsewhere, both British and American bombers made
their strikes too far inland to have much effect on the beach defenses. That left it to the navy to save the day. Fire support from the battleships Warspite and
Ramilles, the monitor Roberts, and a host of lesser ships proved decisive.

Rough seas played havoc with the boats of the first assault waves. DD tanks and the other specialized armor arrived late on many parts of the beach, but with their
help both the Regina Rifles and the Royal Winnipeg Rifles of the 7th Canadian Brigade quickly broke through the crust of German defenses. Nevertheless, Company
B of the RWR suffered heavy losses when it landed ahead of its supporting armor. A similar situation developed on Nan sector when the tide swept the LCA's,
carrying Company B of the Queen's Own Rifles two hundred yards from its assigned landing area. Company B lost sixty-five men on the sand between the water
and the protective sea wall. D Day casualties among the Canadians numbered a thousand. Yet that seems light when compared with the destruction of the 2d
Canadian Division at Dieppe two years before. On that disastrous August day, the Canadians lost some 3,000 men (killed or taken prisoner) out of a landing force
of around 5,000.

By dark, the Canadians had pushed to within three miles of Caen, withstood a counterattack from the 12th SS Panzers, and made contact with units of the 50th
British Division moving in from Gold Beach.

Yes it was. It is part of an offshore reef. Now I understand the map. I thought that was what it represented but was not sure. Thanks, Bonzo!

Your site is looking good. Stop by for a visit fellas, give old Bonzo a little support here.

A quick click will do it!

Bonzo,

I was wondering if you knew of any good online resources rearding the battle of Dieppe. My great grandfather was captured on that beach and I've always wanted to find out more about what he went through.

Thanks

This quote from The Official History of the Canadian Army in the Second World War -
"The Canadian attack was to be made on a two-brigade front, through sectors known as "Mike" (right) and "Nan" (left), including the villages of Courseulles-sur-Mer, Bernieres-sur-Mer and the western outskirts of St. Aubin-sur-Mer. The sea approach was complicated by a series of rocky ledges which, in the case of Les Iles de Bernieres, extended for more than a mile parallel to the shore. These rocks would be covered at high tide, but they were considered sufficiently dangerous to warrant a particularly close adjustment of H Hour for the Canadian attack."

This book also has some excellent maps of Juno beach detailing the layout of the German 716th Infantry Div. as well as the planned attack routes of the various Cdn. Regts. If you like, Bill, I can scan them and send them to you along with any other info which could you could use.

Sincerely,

Please! I would be extremely grateful if you would. I know it is a lot of trouble, but it sure would help to do the battle right. Send a copy to Drake also, just cc to him what you send me.

If you would go to the bother, it would be much appreciated by both of us...

Bonzo, WBW,

First off, thanks for the info. I'm bookmarking those sites now.

Second, sorry about the weird screen name. Its a holdover from my starwars days. Its pronounced Tusken Raider, the "official" name for the sand people of tattoine.

Again, Thanks

A little OT story for you Tusken.

When my youngest son was three, Star Wars hit the scenes. I took him to see the movie in 1978. You can imagine his reaction...a Star Wars fan to the death.

20 years later, now at nearly 23, I get a call from him.

"Dad, get ready, my turn." He took me to see Star Wars I. Funny how that works Image
