The difference between small and big bombs

Post by Historiker »

An opponents asks me to change the bombload of some allied bombers from 500lbs to 5x100lbs each.
They get less effective against ships, but what will this change result in city bombing, ground- and airfield bombing?
Without any doubt: I am the spawn of evil - and the Bavarian Beer Monster (BBM)!

Oh yes they will. At least in RHS.

In WITP as designed, it maches nichts - the code does not care a whit if it is 1 x 500 or 5 x 100 - it multiplies them to get a common outcome. But RHS "cheats" and uses soft effects DIFFERENT from the weight of the bomb.

It ALSO matters if you pick AP, HE, or perhaps some other kind of bomb (the example that matters is a biological bomb).

In general, against cities (strategic bombing), land units or small unarmored ships, you want more bombs - because the chances of a hit go way up - and because we put a square root function in there. For HE, a 100 pound bomb has a soft effect value = 10. But a 500 pound bomb has a soft effect value = 22. [AP is less - about 2/3 of these values - but the anti-armor value is greater for AP]

Yet another complication is that RHS gives you different loadouts BY UNIT for the SAME plane. Few players understand this - and they can only tell by cryptic notes in the unit name. [AP means AP bombs for example] I give the same bombers used by JAAF HE weapons INSTEAD of torpedoes or AP bombs which JNAF gets, for example. You will find that "changing" an aircraft to "all HE bombs" may NOT actually change a particular unit - that ALREADY had them! Only careful analysis in the editor will reveal it. Skilled playes can even CHANGE the loadout of a plane in a unit DURING a game! So there isn't too much need to change it - unless someone has a theory that changing it in the editor is somehow "better" - which theory may or may not have much meaning - depending on how much they understand of what they are messing with?
