In the op report we have Seagulls sighting my subs in the New Caledonia area, so there are at least light cruisers but I guess the heavy Australian cruisers are around also... must have been a high value transport coming to Noumea or Swift is already planning some attacks with his surface forces... Luganville is a level 2 airfield now, built up further, but it will take some time to get it to lev 4 to use it as a long range torp bomber base... then the supply convoys of Noumea will be in trouble as the Zero escort range is 4 hexes further than Noumea... we swept Wuchow as we spotted around 100 enemy aircraft at this airfield and a strike on Canton was flown from this base. We also have 200 bombers at Canton set on airfield attack to Wuchow, but of course "air missions are cancelled"! [:@] I guess after this sweep Swift´s attention will be raised and he will bring out his airforce with my bombers bombing an empty airfield next turn - if the attack will be flown... the sweep was very bloody and all but one of the obsolete Chinese fighters was shot down.

our BB bombardments showed effect and my tank regiment had no problem to take the base... Of course I was dumb enough not to take the unoccupied Dutch base 3 hexes North of Banjarmasin and the Dutch had a retreat path... but now the strange thing that happened: the Dutch had a retreat path to the NORTH to the empty Dutch base but what did they do????? They retreated S O U T H... [8|] and they are now sitting one hex South of my base which means I have to either garrison Banjamarsin or see the Dutch taking the base again in a month or so...

Sian more and more is getting a stalemate. As Swift "complained" in an email about my blitzing on the railway (or better say, he was not happy about it), I didn´t attack with my full power the day when I could have had all my units in Sian. This is turning out to become a problem now as I´m facing more and more units here, as ALL units from the North are moving to Sian and even some are coming from the South on the road now... at least it seems I can take all the bases in the North without a fight... perhaps I should then just retreat from Sian and concentrate my offensive in central or South China as I have taken the whole North due to Swift abandoning all his bases up there... we will see...

I´m really good in guessing where the spotted enemy subs are going. This is the sub that tried to torp an AP - in fact exactly this AP [8|] - at the base North of Kendari. I thought it would go to Kendari to catch some shipping there, so I created two 6 ship ASW TFs at Kendari. Lol, the sub comes in, sinks the AP and nothing else happens... [>:] It´s not hard to guess where the subs are going, they are most times spotted on their direct way to my bases where the most shipping is happening...

First, most of my bombers don´t find the base two hexes away [8|] and then the base is empty as Swift exactly this turn moved out his aircraft after having them there for over a week. Don´t know if it was luck, the airbalance numbers or if he smelt my attack. There was always a aircraft symbol at Canton as I always had aircraft there... oh well... I lose 2 bombers for 3 Chinese fighters destroyed on the ground...

the last Dutch base on Java with all it´s defenders surrendered. Within no time Java was taken. Seems I haven´t lost a lot. A rough guess: 5 ships (a dozen damaged), 5-10 aircraft and 30% of a tank regiment that went down with a torpedoed AK. That´s it I think! [X(] All my ground units are nearly at 100% combat readiness and are looking for further targets.

Again a rough guess of what my opponent has lost during the two weeks of the Java campaign: 25-30 ships. 40-50 aircraft and 25.000 troops. AND not to forget, we took all the oil/ressources nearly undamaged!

What I really could need is a very well working statistic programm included in WITP that gives you exactly the numbers you need, but I think this is not possible to do. And even if it would be very interesting I´m just to lazy to really take notes on everything...

In all cases, the Java campaign was a FULL SUCCESS! [&o] Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!

HERE WE GO!!!! [X(][X(]

A couple of turns ago we spotted more and more TFs at Noumea (including CAs, but no CVs) so I decided to send KB on full speed from Canton Island towards Noumea to catch some shipping. With one time refuelling it took us 5 or 6 turns to get in position this turn. As Lexington was spotted and unsuccesfully attacked by a sub last turn we knew about the presence of at least one US CV and I was sure Swift was going after my supply convoy to Luganville where supply is desperately needed to further build up the base (reached af lev 3 this turn) and to have enough supply for my bombers that will be flown in. So we tried to be in a good position for our strike on the enemy carrier(s). BUT, weather was bad in the morning and even though we spotted AND the enemy carrier(s) reacted towards us, no strike was launched. Also the 54 Zeroes with 80+ Nells/Betties from Lunga didn´t launch even though weather was perfect over Lunga and the range was only 8 hexes... (why am I not surprised that my bombers don´t attack?? [>:]).

The weather cleared in the afternoon...

and the expected second carrier - CV Enterprise - launches a full strike from only 2 hexes away:

Our ships are hit by 1000 lb bombs with the two on Kirishima not penetrating or destroying anything. No follow up explosions on Soryu but the expected damage by a 1000lb bomb was high! Nevertheless we came away in a good condition. The enemy bombers proved to be very hard to down but we still manage to take more than half of the attacking bombers down with our fighters.

now CV Lexington sends a full strike but our Cap is again doing a good job (speaking about Nikmod - in stock not a single plane would have come through the cap). Interesting side note is the fact that a dozen Dauntless just turned around due to low morale! [X(] That was good to see but again one and a half dozen bombers are coming in for a bombing run. Range was 4 hexes and all bombers dropped 500lb bombs. A Dauntless manages to score a 500lb bomb hit on Kaga, but with no follow on explosions I haven´t feared a bigger damage than 10-15 sys points... more about that later on...

then we launch a perfectly coordinated strike (in this case it´s a shame that we launch ONE coordinated strike). The high experienced KB pilots of the first dive bombers that went in immediately put some bombs into CV Enterprise to make it easy for follow on waves to knock out the ship. We also sink (confirmed) two heavy cruisers and heavily damage a DD! [&o] Most people would be happy with this result (well, perhaps I´m kind of happy too) but you know me, to rant a bit, this turn could have been a complete disaster for the Allied too, so IMO Swift came away very good!

No bad weather in the morning and KB would have launched at least twice - probably against both carriers. No single coordinated strike and - probably - we could have seen two US carriers sunk (damaged). I think at least 50% of my big strike against the Enterprise TF failed to find the target during the replay because Enterprise and the CAs were already sunk, so it was a complete overkill. The most disturbing fact - again - are my land based Betty/Nell daitais. High experience, high morale, 8 hexes to target, target has only a small cap, we have 54 escorts, a lev 4 airfield not overstacked, enough supplies, perfect weather, the enemy spotted several times in the morning and afternoon... and 80+ bombers just stay home, sitting at the airfield and once again let an US CV get away - just like at Johnston recently... [8|]

Ship status:

I was not amused to see a 1000lb bomb going through Soryu´s flight deck, but with no further explosions I thought the damage could be even a bit higher than it actually is. Seeing a 500lb bomb hitting Kaga but no follow on explosions I thought she would take 15 sys points max but just look at the pitiful state Kaga is now! [X(][X(] What die roll must I have hit that a single 500lb bomb hit does such a high damage (probably 50+ after fires are put out). Again, there was NO follow on explosion!

This once again proves my feeling that I usually don´t want to engage ANY enemy carriers. Even though we had a clear advantage, I just would have preferred to kill some cruisers, DDs and a dozen cargoes at Noumea (as it was planned with my move towards New Caledonia) than having two CVs of KB out of action now. We can include our 3 CVLs into KB but they are not in the area at the moment. This would give us some 100 aircraft, so we have then 30 aircraft less than before our fleet carriers were hit, not to mention the fact that the CVL pilots are 15-25 points of experience lower than the high exp. KB pilots. It will take time and I would have needed KB to cover some more of my invasions, so I´m not happy with the moment this fight happened.

The USS Enterprise was sunk near New Caledonia by superior Japanese forces! Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!

USS Enterprise (CV-6, later CVA-6 and CVS-6), 1938-1958
USS Enterprise, a 19,800-ton Yorktown class aircraft carrier, was built at Newport News, Virginia. Commissioned in May 1938, she made a shakedown cruise to South America, then operated in the Caribbean. In April 1939, Enterprise was ordered to the Pacific, where she was to play an unparalleled role in the great sea war that began with Japan's 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

At the time of that raid, Enterprise was at sea. On 10 December, her planes sank a Japanese submarine, the first of many enemy ships that would fall victim to her air group. Later in December, she participated in the abortive Wake Island relief expedition. In February 1942, after escorting convoys to the South Pacific, Enterprise attacked Japanese positions in the Marshalls. During the following three months, she hit Wake and Marcus islands, covered the Doolittle raid on Japan and was en route to the South Pacific when the Battle of the Coral Sea took place in early May.

In June 1942, Enterprise played a vital role in the Battle of Midway, in which her planes sank or helped sink three Japanese aircraft carriers and a cruiser. She was next involved in the Solomons Campaign, including the Guadalcanal landings in early August, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons later in that month and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in October. Badly hit by Japanese bombs in August and October, Enterprise was the only available fleet carrier in the area in November and, despite her damaged condition, launched her air group against enemy ships during the climactic Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. Remaining in the Solomons area into the Spring of 1943, she received the Presidential Unit Citation for her exploits there.

In late 1943 and early 1944 Enterprise participated in the Gilberts and Marshalls invasions and in attacks on Japanese bases in the Central and Southern Pacific. In June and July, she took part in the Marianas operation and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. From August to December, her planes joined in more raids and again engaged enemy ships during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in late October. At the end of 1944 Enterprise received a special night operations air group, with which she took part in the Luzon campaign, strikes in the South China Sea, the Iwo Jima invasion, raids on the Japanese home islands and the Okinawa campaign. She was repaired locally for bomb damage received on 13 March 1945 and Kamikaze damage on 11 April, but had to the return to the U.S. after being badly hit by another Kamikaze on 14 May.

Enterprise's repairs were finished in September 1945, after the Japanese surrender. She helped return servicemen from the war zones and was present for the Fleet Review off New York City in October 1945. Inactive after early 1946, Enterprise decommissioned in February 1947. While laid up, she was redesignated CVA-6 in October 1952 and CVS-6 in August 1953. After the failure of efforts to make her into a memorial, USS Enterprise was sold for scrapping in July 1958.

CA Chester was also a victim of our high experienced bomber pilots!

USS Chester (CA-27, originally CL-27), 1930-1959
USS Chester, a 9200-ton Northampton class light cruiser built at Camden, New Jersey, was commissioned in June 1930. After a shakedown cruise to the Mediterranean Sea, she became flagship of Commander Light Cruiser Divisions, Scouting Fleet. In July 1931, she was reclassified as a heavy cruiser and her hull number was changed from CL-27 to CA-27. Through the 1930s, Chester was active in fleet exercises and special assignments. Among the latter was a voyage to the Philippines in September-December 1935 and a good-will cruise to South America in November-December 1936.

Chester was based at Pearl Harbor beginning in early 1941 and escorted two U.S. Army transports to the Philippines in October and November of that year. She was at sea when Japan began the Pacific War with their 7 December 1941 suprise attack on Pearl Harbor and operated in the Hawaiian area during the weeks that followed that raid. In January 1942, the cruiser took part in the reinforcement of Allied positions in the southern Pacific. On 1 February, she was damaged by a Japanese bomb during a raid on enemy facilities in the Marshall Islands. After repairs, Chester went back to the south Pacific, where in early May she participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Overhauled on the west coast during the Summer of 1942, Chester was next assigned to take part in the Guadalcanal campaign, but had only spent about a month in the area when she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on 20 October and had to return to the U.S. for extensive repairs. She was back in the Pacific war zone in September 1943 and during the next six months participated in the invasions of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands. Sent to the North Pacific in late May 1944, Chester bombarded Japanese-held islands in the Kuriles during June. Moving to the central Pacific, she shelled Wake and Marcus Islands in September and October, then steamed west to participate in the Leyte operation and the resulting Battle of Leyte Gulf.

In February 1945, Chester's guns supported the invasion of Iwo Jima. During the war's final two months, she operated off Okinawa and China and in the north Pacific, where she assisted in occupation activities in September and October. Her final active assignment was as a transport, bringing service personnel home from the central and western Pacific. Chester moved into the Atlantic in early 1946 and was decommissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in June of that year. Following thirteen years in "mothballs", she was sold for scrapping in August 1959.

The third major US vessel that was sunk during the battle near New Caledonia: USS Salt Lake City!

USS Salt Lake City (CA-25, originally CL-25), 1929-1948
USS Salt Lake City, a 9100-ton Pensacola class heavy cruiser built at Camden, New Jersey, was commissioned in December 1929. Her original hull number, CL-25, was changed to CA-25 in July 1931. The ship's first two years of active service were spent in the Atlantic area. She shifted her base to the U.S. west coast in early 1932 and was thereafter generally in the Pacific, with occasional trips through the Panama Canal for brief operations in the Caribbean and Atlantic. In mid-1941, Salt Lake City crossed the Pacific to visit Australia.

On 7 December 1941, when the United States was brought into World War II by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Salt Lake City was operating with the USS Enterprise task group. She remained in the Hawaiian area for the next two months, then participated in her task force's central Pacific raids during February and March 1942. In April, she was part of the force that executed the Doolittle raid on Japan. During August-October 1942, Salt Lake City was in the south Pacific to support the campaign to seize and hold Guadalcanal. She escorted USS Wasp during the landings of 7-8 August and subsequent operations, and was present when Wasp was sunk by a Japanese submarine on 15 September. On 11-12 October, Salt Lake City helped fight the Battle of Cape Esperance, receiving damage from enemy gunfire.

Following repairs, Salt Lake City was sent to the north Pacific. There, on 26 March 1943 she was the largest U.S. ship present during the Battle of the Komandorski Islands, and was again damaged by Japanese shells. She continued her support of the Aleutian Campaign until September, when she returned to Hawaii to prepare for central Pacific operations. These included the seizure of the Gilbert Islands in November 1943, the invasion of the Marshalls in January and February 1944, and raids on Japanese bases in February-April. The cruiser had a brief north Pacific tour in mid-1944, followed by further central Pacific operations. She took part in carrier operations prior to and during the October 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf.

In 1945, Salt Lake City participated in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. After the fighting ended in August, she supported the Occupation of Japan and "Magic Carpet" operations to transport American servicemen back to the U.S. The now-elderly cruiser was then placed in relatively inactive status until sent to serve as a target during the July 1946 atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Left severely damaged by this experience, USS Salt Lake City was decommissioned a month later. She was sunk as a target for conventional weapons in May 1948.

to my surprise we launch a bigger strike in the afternoon phase, but again this is only half of our bombers. I thought we could achieve some hits, but I was wrong. Only one Nell puts a 250kg AP bomb into Lexington which is now on fire. No further explosions were sighted. I expect the Lexington TF to be out of range next turn, but with one US carrier sunk and another retiring lightly damaged to the East we have now air superiority in the New Caledonia area and our transport convoys should now be a lot safer.

this attack definetely finished Benham! The ship goes down with a JAPANESE captain... [8|] oh this leader bug. At least two dozen Allied ships were sunk when I saw a Japanese captain going down with the ship...

When searching for DD Benham I have found one that was scrapped in 1935 and the second one is this one. Amazingly it was commissioned December 1943 but in the game it´s available right from the start... [8|]
USS Benham (DD-796), 1943-1960
USS Benham, a 2050-ton modified Fletcher class destroyer built at Staten Island, New York, was commissioned in December 1943. Following shakedown in the western Atlantic, the new destroyer transited the Panama Canal in March 1944 and steamed westwards to join the war against Japan. She entered combat during the Saipan invasion in June, helping to shoot down two enemy aircraft that were attacking her escort carrier task force. In July 1944 Benham participated in the invasion of Tinian and later used her guns to support ground forces in action on Guam. In September and October she escorted the fast aircraft carriers of Task Force 38 during strikes throughout the western Pacific during the Palaus invasion and in preparation for the invasion of Leyte.

Benham was next in combat in November and December 1944, when her task force operated in support of the Leyte campaign and the Mindanao landings. She suffered damage during a severe typhoon in mid-December, but was ready for action late in that month and took part in carrier strikes on Formosa and in the South China sea area in January 1945. During the next two months her task force attacked targets in southern Japan and on Iwo Jima. In March she participated in two inconclusive anti-submarine actions. Benham was off Okinawa during the intense suicide plane attacks of April and May, receiving light damage when a Kamikaze exploded nearby on 17 April. She again took part in raids on the Japanese home islands during June and July 1945 and was present in Tokyo Bay when Japan formally surrendered on 2 September.

Returning to the U.S. later in 1945, Benham stayed on the West Coast until placed out of commission at San Diego, California, in October 1946. She was recommissioned in March 1951, during the defense buildup brought on by the Korean War. She soon steamed to the East Coast for modernization, then became part of the Atlantic Fleet. She deployed twice to European and Mediterranean waters in 1952-1953 and in 1954 made a westward round-the-World cruise that included service with the Seventh Fleet in the Far East. In late 1956 and early 1957 Benham was back in the Mediterranean in the wake of the Suez crisis. The rest of the decade saw her visit South America, northern Europe and the Mediterranean, the latter during the mid-1958 Middle Eastern crisis. In June 1960 USS Benham decommissioned and later in the year was transferred to Peru. Renamed Villar, she was a unit of that Nation's navy until 1980, when she was scrapped.

we take the undefended Kungchang in Norht China. This is the next base to Sian in the North and my first division entered the hex on the road directly next to Sian this turn (there are 3 Chinese units already waiting). With Kungchang fallen and Sian cut off now, the battle for Sian has now entered a new stage. We will begin our real air offensive against the supply depots now and then we will begin deliberate attacks also. We have a good number of troops in reserve at Homan, so we can rotate exhausted troops at Sian out. Average preparation for Sian is around 55 now. More than 20 units with 120.000+ troops will be defending Sian (around 4000 assault points), when the last 4 Chinese corps,that are coming from the North, enter Sian.

As mentioned before, even if we won´t take Sian and see all those Chinese troops surrender, then it will still be a complete success as we have taken the whole North of China due to the retreat of all the Chinese troops to Sian. The major target was Lanchow with it´s oil / HI and ressources! Banzai!

I was really amazed to see that only two Chinese corps (of which one is completely understrenght) and a base force are defending the road hex just West of Sian. Swift saw me coming for weeks now and he attacked several divisions of mine moving at 2 miles a day into this hex. This was not a blitz move on the rail, he had weeks time to respond to my moves! Last turn the first div entered the hex with another one this turn. My units have no problem to repulse this shock attack in a wooden hex, they wouldn´t even had a problem in a clear hex... The Chinese need a LOT more troops to break the kettle!

one hex North of Sian. Perfect example of the follow unit order NOT working!! [:@] My units coming from Kungchang were set to follow this division (it´s the slowest with the most fatigue). Until the last couple of turns all the other units showed more miles travelled than the unit they should follow (something I´m seeing all the time)

and last turn the lead unit entered the hex with ALL following units reverting to DEFEND...

I don´t know how many months (years) it has been when a patch came out that "fixed" [8|] the follow unit order. It then worked some time until it was broken again with another patch... The only thing that saved our div from being kicked out is the fact that those Chinese corps must be very low on supply as they had no supply path...
