ITALIAN SAMURAI (CHS 160; Hoepner(J) vs. Cantona2(A))
Hi all,
after a long time i'm back to my origins. I'll lead Japanese conquest of the Pacific against Cantona2.
The first turn has been sent to the evil allies.
Usual and common HRs.
The only remarkable ones are:
Aden and Panama cannot be conquered.
No 4Es below 15,000 ft but allowed above 30,000 ft.
1 port attack at turn 1 allowed.
No jap invasion of Oz before Malaya,SRA, DEI and PI are conquered.
allied ASW restricted to 6 vassels.
On turn one Japan is allowed to invade only on northern Borneo, Malaya, PI and Menado for what concerns DEI and SRA. Free hands in the pacific, as usual.
I've been quite carefull messing up with the production on turn 1. It will take me some time to get comfortable again with japanese economy.
Just swicthed the production of useless planes (Ida,Theresa and so on) and raised the production of zero and Oscars. As usual.
I'll explain later on my strategies for the first months of war....stay tuned

RE: ITALIAN SAMURAI (CHS 160; Hoepner(J) vs. Cantona2(A))
Ok, here we go.
This time i wanted to try a different approach playing as Japan.
I'll go for a normal conservative strategy in the DEI-PI-SRA and Malaya.
PI and Malaya will come first, while only Menado and Ambonia will be invaded at the beginning,in order to estabilish two good air bases covering the southern flank of the PI invasion.
The main difference will be placed in the Pacific. I won't go for PH (the first port attack will be at Manila conduced by Nells and Betties from Formosa). KB will cover early invasion of Johnston, Wake, Palmyra and Christmas Island. I'll soon estabilish airbases in these isles with Zeros and Betties. The presence of the KB in the area should allow me to expand early on eastwards.
Tarawa and Rabaul will be invaded but aren't on my top-list.
The idea is to try to go for a Pacific strategy instead of the Indian one.
Burma won't be invaded in the first months of war. We will try a invasion later on attacking directly Rangoon.....
I do not have enough time to write a good thread right now. In two days i'll have to do the final examination to become a Lawer after 10 years of studies...so i'm a bit busy[:D] Since thursday i'll start a good AAR, promise[:'(]
This is the first Turn report...

I know...it's boring to read the combat report...i swear i'll cut the following reports in order to let u read them easier[:'(]

RE: ITALIAN SAMURAI (CHS 160; Hoepner(J) vs. Cantona2(A))
Good luck with your exam in the short run and your strategy in the long run !
I think your strategy will be interesting to follow. I have had a manila attack done to me as Allied player in a PBEM and feel it was more painful for me than PH attack. I still had the big old BBs, but could not use them very effectively due to the Betties.
I was quite afraid my opponent would do in the Pacific something similar to what you plan, but he did not do so... maybe he will still try it (we are in May 42 now), but now I am a bit prepared. So I am eager to see just how bad a fate passed me...

Yeah, good luck with the exam.

Well, that's that settled then.

No 4Es below 15,000 ft but allowed above 30,000 ft.
and of course 1 port attack, think you concede too much. Dont even let any invincible weapon exist in the game. Its after all only a game, not real history, any such invincible things could only lead to ruin of your game. And what are u doing around Hawaii? Deprived of the right of PH strike and still KB in hawaii to catch some worthless cruiser and junk-collecting ships? You would have a hard time ahead....
And the johnston adventure.... How you suppose to defend it AFTER KB departs.... or u really think your opponent is THAT weak.... Oh I better shut up for now and sit down to watch a good historical play that called "Peloponnesian War ACT II"....[8D]

RE: ITALIAN SAMURAI (CHS 160; Hoepner(J) vs. Cantona2(A))
Hi Trollelite! Welcome back!
My objective here isn't to sink his ships. Not now however. His subs are a pain, but war it's not going to be changed with 10 subs left or sunk. PH strike usually damage few BBs, but this time i decided to go for a pacific strategy, letting at the same time his main pacific fleet undamage.
If my initial plan goes well i'll conquer Palmyra,Christmas isl., Wake and Johnston in the first month. This is going to trouble his plans in the pacific and maybe will force him to attack one of this points early on...As Japan i tend to fix in my mind that the final target is to get the resources i need and expand my defensive perimeter but not hoping to hold it...just to delay his advance and make him pay a bloody price for every island he takes back...
Tomorrow we're gonna attack Brunei and Miri. The first 2 oil centers. Let's see if luck is on my side here and if i can get a pair of good dice and rolls....

Good luck with your final exams GH.
Interesting how your holding KB out of the Opening Day festivities.....looking forward to see how your strategy unfolds.
The air war is a bit different in CHS experimental....the A6M2s lose their bonus so the USN fighters can match up against them pretty well early on but your Nates and Oscars should fare much better against the other Allied fighters. Allied replacement pilots are terrible while Japan can train up her fighter replacement pilots fairly rapidly. AA is deadly against Japan in this scenario......especially against larger Allied bases like Singapore and Pearl. If you find your level bombers taking exorbitant losses to AA over Singapore, even at elevations above 17,000 feet, try bombing at 27,000 feet with your Kates. And dont ever use your divebombers against bases that have even modest defenses.
And remember that your Sally factories will auto upgrade to Helens on 1/1/42 so plan ahead with your Nakajima production.

Ok, back to war:
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/08/41
As i tried to explain in the previous posts, I'm going to try a traditional approach towards malaya-PI and SRA in general this time, while i'll try to be very aggressive in the central pacific. The idea is to let him feel confortable with his pacific fleet intact so that a "decisive battle" may come earlier than usual, when KB will still have some advantages....
I'm concentrating my units on Malaya and PI. These are the strategies for these 2 major first objectives:
Malaya: Kotha Baru and Singora are the two entry-points for my units. Nothing special. At singora i've already based fighters and dive bombers, so that the Malacca straits will be almost closed to his fleeing ships, while my subs will hunt the other two approaches on the Indian Ocean (North and south of Java).
He's doing a Sir Robin here (at least that's what it seems from these first moves), fleeing his ships not to Sosarbaja for a final defence but going to save themself towards India or Perth.
I'll concentrate on Malaya also the 15th Burma army, in order to get Singapore faster. Burma won't be invaded for now. I'll push him back from Mandalay when the SRA-DEI campaign will be over.
PI: here the trick will be to force him to divide his forces. I'm concentrating the two armies involved here at Lyngayen and Naga, so he will have to face two different main vectors. He will have to chose rather to defend Manila or Clark-Bataan. I hope i can manage to place my units in Manila and Clark at the same time, so any retreats to a single fortified base will be forbidden to him. I'll try to estabilish an AF at Lyngayen, in order to start pounding his units asap.
At the same time i've invaded Jolo, Menado, Brunei,Miri and Kuching. Ambonia will be invaded in the next week.
Brunei fell today along with Miri and Kuching. Unluckly At Brunei i got 23 oil facilities damaged while 40 were damaged at Miri[:o] Hope i don't get this bad luck with Palembang....
CVL Ruijo is supporting the Invasion at Menado and Ambonia, while CV Kaga, along with 2 CVEs in in the PI sea, looking for fleeing units from Manila (lots of his subs escaped from the Manila-day-of-infamy[:-]).
In the pacific i've already placed the first planes at Johnston Isl.
Wake and Palmyra will be invaded in the next 3/4 days, with KB in support.
In Rabaul Japan found a stiff resistance...let's see if tomorrow i'll manage to take the place, otherwise i'll have to move more assets to this area...
mmmm...what else? well...there would be a lot to tell and explain...i'll try to more specific as the war goes on.

With Trollelite i'm playing exactly the same scen but as allies.
I can tell that the CHS exp. is really the most balanced scenario i've played. AA is deadly, but at the same time A2A seems to work more properly towards the allies, as it should be. I can efford to lose planes due to AA, as long as i can produce more of them and train them in China. I'm usually very bloody with japanese air assets...[:)]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/09/41
mmmm...my opening move wasn't probably the best one. I'm already losing the grip on the momentum in DEI-SRA and in the pacific, where the lack of zeros (of which production has been raised but it takes forever to convert all those claudes daitais..) is making me feel a bit out of Balance.
He has already started to bomb Johnston island with his 4Es from PH...would be a pain to hold that base[:'(]
However, war goes on and we finally managed to conquer Lyngayen at Luzon and Kota Baru in Malaya. Planes are flowing in in order to estabilish the air-superiority in these two areas.
I got really unluky this turn. a SCTF composed by 3 CLs passed near Bataan (60miles far from it) and one shell fired from the CD there hit CL OI...the only one with Radar along with Kikitami...result is that the CL is now struggling his way through Formosa, with fire and floating damage around 50s...[:o]

mmmm...my opening move wasn't probably the best one.
Two more DDs that hit Tarakan today got badly hit by CD guns and will probably sink...[:(]

Cap Johnson's Island. 27 Zero's will keep him from gaining any experience and he will lose bombers. Get 20,000+ supply there for reinforcements.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/10/41
Thanks Okami.....i tried to LRCAP Johsnton today, with my crack zero daitais from KB...1 hex away...the result was that none of the 4Es has been shot down and i've lost 5 zeros in the process (1 to A2A, 4 more due to op causes after being damaged by counter-fire...)...It seems that i must ask Trollelite the secret for shooting down the 4Es cause i cannot find the clue here...[:(] Once i was a better jap player...
However, The allies are fighting back everywhere they can! Another CL of mine got clobbered...this time at Rabaul...suddenly CL Adelaide came out from the fog and started to pound my transport fleet there (at Rabaul we're still trying to take the base from the stiff Australian defence). CL Kirishima tried to save the fleet and engaged a fierce fight against the Aus ship...but the result is poor...Adelaide got away with some fire aboard but she'll probably reach a safe port, while Kirishima will probably go beneath the waves before reaching Kavieng...[:o]
For the rest, Boise have been lucky again! CVL Ruijo launched a Torpedo attack after spotting here near Makassar...17 Kates didn't manage to hit a single score, while the AA boys of the Boise did their job pretty well....[:'(]
Tomorrow we'll invade Ambonia...a Tranport TF, reinforced with a CL and 8 DDs will try to land there 100 AVs...let's see if i can get a bit of luck with a landing without losing some major ships...
Nothing much to report. 14th Army is moving towards Clark Fields, while the 16th is advancing from Naga towards Manila. Tomorrow should fall Alor Star in Malaya and hopefully Rabaul...we'll also try to smash HK's defences with the help of our BBs....let's see...

RE: ITALIAN SAMURAI (CHS 160; Hoepner(J) vs. Cantona2(A))
I'd suggest sending in an Oscar daitai also, as he will just move to high-alt bombing when you cap it with zeroes permanently. 27 zeroes, 27 oscars provides a nice mix.
Surface combat TF fanboy
RE: ITALIAN SAMURAI (CHS 160; Hoepner(J) vs. Cantona2(A))
The secret is cap not Lrcap. 2 fighters for every bomber flown should get you the results you are looking for. Also less ops loses than Lrcap. So in that last attack you had 4to1 it that had been cap you would have at least damaged all the bombers with a good chance of shooting one down.
