State of the Art with H3 ANW?

Post by PaulWRoberts »

I've been away from ANW for a while, but I'm thinking of getting back into it. What is the current state of the game? By this question I mean, How are the bugs these days?

Also, when I last checked in it seemed that most scenarios were incompatible with the latest patch. Is this still true? Are updated scenarios available somewhere, and will they work 100%?

Thanks for any advice towards my potential re-enlistment!

In my opinion its possibly one of the most bugged and unplayable pieces of software out. The potential for it though is staggering and i'd imagine if it was sorted out to work as advertised it really would be a legendary title. Save your money and get the commanders edition of harpoon at the moment, its not as complex but is a far more polished and fully functioning product.

Why don't you D/L the demo and try it out? It is a release candidate, so as I understand it, not exactly the same release as you get with the full software, but I reckon that by this stage, there isn't a massive difference. For me, personally, there have been a few crashes on Vista, but it doesn't happen regularly, and if you save often it isn't a major issue, other than being an annoyance. Other than that, I am quite enjoying it, and plan on getting it for Christmas (if I can hold out that long).

Less than they were... but they are still being worked on.

It is hard for me to be definite without breaking beta-agreement, but I think this sums it up - AGSI are very keen to make sure the next release is as bug-free and enjoyable as possible. It seems that, with one or two major exceptions and quite a few minor niggling problems, we are approaching that stage. A new update was promised Sept 15 but has been kept back to whip as many bugs as possible.

Bit of a chicken and egg situation... some developers are waiting for a reliable DB and scenario editor. Without a compatible database the scenarios cannot be updated.

Others are plowing ahead with the tools at hand.

DB2K Beta 11 is an example of the first (few tested and working scenarios for ANW). The Colonial Database (also from HarpoonHQ) has been released as ANW compatible, but only a few scenarios are are yet released.

The PlayersDB has re-released many scenarios and been updated, but I personally don't like it. Others find it very enjoyable.

WhiteOwl is quite right - the USNI demo is a good gauge of where ANW currently is.
I don't work here. I just collect the glasses to get a beer quicker.
