The NEW FLEET Command Vs. HCE

Post by ETF »

So what is your opinion between the two?
I have of course purchased both but must admit the HCE graphics still seem lacking. Both seem to be hyper acccuarte in their data. Not sure. Which do you recommend. I have a XMAS present to send to a buddy who loves Naval Tactical games and a limited budget :)

New fleet command ...

Recently, Sonalysts rereleased Fleet Command as part of a bundle: NCP (Naval Combat Pack).

It included 688i, Sub Command, and Fleet Command.

Supposedly (assuming you already has these games), one of the big selling points was that they fixed these games to run smoothly under XP. Hmm, almost reminds you a bit of Matrix's rereleases? :)

Well, I never owned 688i or Fleet Command. But I do play Sub Command and I think if you spend a few minutes, you can make it run under XP. Also, the NCP version of Sub Command is incompatible with SCXIIc/SCU (Sub Command Extreme/Sub Changer Utility). This was a mod that effectively made Sub Command from an average nuke sim to a superb nuke sim; it can be argued that SC with SCXIIc applied rivals or even exceeds the later follow on game of Dangerous Waters with also included the Seawolf, LA, and Akula subs as playables.

Well I find the whole HCE interface to be far superior in its use an flexibility, HCE I find also handles groups and formations much better, which was and is a major frustration for me when playing it.

It has a nice grapical aspect I have to agree, but I dont find that to be very appeasing when the UI and the whole modelling of certain actions could be done so much better. I will admit I do like watching stuff explode lol

This is just my view on it however [:)] everyones entitled to their likes and opinions.

I assume the 'new' Fleet Command must be drastically different from the original, or nobody would even ask the question? The original release was, at best, half 'thinking man's RTS' and half click-fest.

The "new" FC has only simply been updated to be fully compatible with XP, IIRC. I have been playing FC since a little after it came out on and off, with the NWP mod once it was available. Just recently purchased HCE. HCE is head and shoulders better in terms of realism, IMO. I did not like H3, which turned me off from the Harpoon series for a bit, but I am really getting into HCE lately. Great balance of realism and playability.

I play all versions of Computer Harpoon since the beginning and have tested Fleet Command for a while. Bought that Naval Combat Pack half a year ago. Yes, FC is eye candy and nice in the first instant.

But the interface is horrible and there is much more realism into Harpoon IMO. I got lots of crashes in Fleet Command, even after upgrading to the 18.31 mod.

There should be a new update for FC available now, maybe it is better now.

My Resume: FC is nice on a fisrt glimpse, but when it comes to managing units and formations, its a nerve-racking experience. Choose HCE - it rocks!

Yes, my XP still doesn't run Fleet Command that great.  The mod is good but many of the user created scenarios for it haven't been updated and won't play on it.

Besides those couple points I think HCE has more to it and much more of a scenario creating fan base.  Sure, it doesn't have 3D but the 3D graphics are what doesn't run smoothly on WinXP for FC/NWP.

I've never owned Fleet Command (being a Harpoon fanatic, it would be akin to blasphemy, ya know [;)]) and I have an obvious bias, but from what I've heard and been able to glean on my own, HCE (and any version of Harpoon, for that matter) has considerably more 'depth' than Fleet Command.

You may be forgiven as long as you have repented and turned from your evil FC playing ways. [:-] Say ten 'Hail Harpoons' ! [&o]
