Finally Won my First Game

Post by Anthropoid »

Finally won my first game as the Union. First Sarge difficulty with most of the advanced rules in place, except I think I left Out of Command off. Learned a lot from this game, primarily the value of taking your time with the Detailed Combats, surrounding enemy units and causing them to surrender.

By Fall of 1864, the Confederate AI had evidently nothing left, and was just launching suicide attacks which I easily repulsed. Sherman and his Army were virtually unstoppable. Won it in about Late Nov 1864. The last half of the game involved my containers fanning out all over the south to besiege cities. I won without even taking on Lynchburg or Richmond.

All in all quite fun.

I've restarted as the CSA, and boy does it seem a lot harder!

Couple sorta 'bug-like' comments observations.

1. If you inadvertently set all your units in detailed combat to 'f' (fortify) there seems to be no way to get out of fast mode.

2. I've now thrown away the .sve, but I started a game as CSA, and got into a fight in Central Missouri. I was routed and after the battle, the Dept of Missouri was in the Potomac! long way to run away [:-]

The wakeup command (e) will unfortify a unit - although I can see that is not much use if you have managed to make all your units inactive and have no time to act. The Missouri teleport does seem very weird.

Congratulations on the win; the advanced rules with detailed battles make for a really great game. The various difficulty levels and tougher scenarios adds to the challenge - and try out random stats at some stage, they make it even more interesting.

Can you post this in the support sub-forum? That's where Eric likes all such reports to go, since he checks there regularly.

What you're reporting is similar to something reported just once before, and months ago at that. It seems that on incredibly rare occasions, an army retreats a bit too far away. Without a save file this will probably be hard to figure out. The good news is that having had this happen just twice out of all of the thousands and thousands of FOF battles that have been fought suggests that it's unlikely to be encountered by you again.

Silly me, it seems I deleted it today during my day-off binge of playing as the CSA.

I'm playing on Sarge difficulty and just absolutely walloping the Union. The date is like June 1862, and pretty sure I've caused about 30 to 40 brigades to surrender! Several battles with casualty ratios that were 12:7 or thereabouts. Amazing they just keep coming at me, trying to take Lexington, KY. I grabbing bck the Illini and Indie provinces I've conquered. I guess this means I've pretty much figured out how to play the game eh!? Now, if I can just keep those Governors happy, maybe we can conquer them Yankee aggressors [:'(]. It'll be interesting to see how much of an ahistorical outcome I manage to accomplish, though sadly, I'm leaving on Saturday, so may not be able to finish this game before then, so finishing it might have to wait till late Jan 2008.
