just downloaded, game won't run

Post by augustus »

just got the game on thursday. The game will go through the options screen okay, but after that it will stop during the loading streen and I get a dialog box that says "assertion Failed" and some other stuff. My only options are the old "abort" "retry" "failed".

What's the assertion that failed?

Do you have any other applications running that might be using a lot of memory?

I'm not running any other applications.

The message says
assertion failed!

Program: c:\matrix games\forge of freedom\forge of freedom.exe
file: c:\projects\ACWplato\source\TGeneral.cpp
Line: 213

Expression: pGeneralList.hState<34

This is as I try to start the July 1861 scenario, haven't tried any other yet.

Strange. It's an invalid value in the generals' data file, and so doesn't have anything to do with an out-of-memory error (which is the usual cause of assertion failures on load) as I had suspected.

My guess is that for some reason your game is being prevented from being installed properly. Would you mind checking to see whether you have a Commanders.txt file in the various scenario folders you try to load? Each file should be about 730K in size. Sometimes virus programs prevent our games from installing properly. I'm not sure which virus programs you may be using, but you might try temporarily disabling them while installing.

Wait, are you trying to start the old July, 1861 scenario with a newer version? That one should have been removed by the update. If it's called "July, 1861" - it's obsolete and incompatible, don't start it. Check the readme, the up to date July, 1861 scenario is now called "Coming Fury".

Erik Rutkins was correct. I had missed that in the Read me file. Thank you all for your help!

FYI -- Well, I just bought and downloaded FoF today (12/12/07, ~2pm ET, USA) and the original July 1861 scenario is still in version 1.10.10 and still causes the Assertion Failed error. Of course it was the 1st scenario I picked to give FoF a test go, and ... crash! [:-] [:'(]

Thanks, I know that was supposed to be removed - I'll see how it slipped through and correct that for the future. Every other scenario should work fine.

So I'd be right in assuming I can just delete the July_1861 folder from the scenario folder and it won't effect anything? I like my hard drive to be as tidy as possible.

Yes, delete that folder and you're fine.
