So what is the story of THIS picture?

Post by Hortlund »

I´ve seen this picture around in several places but have never heard of where it came from or how.

I´m thinking it came from some US propaganda film and is staged as there is a Japanese aircraft laying in the dirt. But then it looks like there is an explosion happening in the background so maybe it is the slide in a film of actual combat or something.

I know it looks cartoonish, but the picture quality could have been enhanced by an art studio, and the original image could be real. So Im of different opinions. A very interesting picture either way though.

Anyone know the history behind this picture?

As far as my knowledge is concerned since I have this one in my own collection it is just a propaganda postcard printed in 1942.

Just looks like a cheapo drawing to me. I don't know anybody would think that such a simple narrow drawing would have anything real behind it. I used to draw aerial war fights all the time in school, and I would certainly never do anthing as dim as placing two crashed enemy planes underneath the featured plane, and then not even show the featured plane firing it's guns.

That is quite likely, but it's not even good propaganda given the aforementioned artistic notions.

It's probably staged.

I don't think a combat photographer is going to be standing underneath an aerial dogfight, with planes dropping on his head like autumn leaves.

Notice, too, that the scale of the aircraft change. (Compare the size of the aircraft in the lower left with the size of a similar plane crashing "further in the background".) Probably cropped together from different images.

This is something of a long shot, but during WW II, the Office of War Information (OWI) distributed info on the use of blackout curtains and the like, as well as propaganda films.

I doubt this post card came from a film, but if there was a similar blackout on the West Coast to the one later imposed on the East Coast, the post card may be suggesting that residents along the CA shoreline can help bring down the curtain on Imperial Japan --the "rising sun" -- by using blackout shades at night.

There was one occasion when an IJN sub shelled the the CA coast, and there were rumors of an IJ invasion of CA immediately after PH -- hence Japanese-American internment camps -- but I don't know if that's what this post card is referring to.

Anyone have an exact date for this post card, or is this just a take-off on Ike's photo?

Well it´s good to see some people base their photographic evidence on historical records and not their opinions.

How about this picture...anyone want to tell me where this picture is from and when?

Don't have any proof, but I'm beginning to suspect IKE is a "Steakhouse Moron". He started out asking what seemed to be a straightforward question, but has since lead all discussion towards conflict and name-calling. Sounds like a "moron" to me....

While I have no real proof..., I'm beginning to suspect that IKE is a "Steakhouse Moron". He began with an innocent enough inquiry, but has since turned the post into an endless stream of antagonism and name-calling. That sounds very much like the typical "moron" effort.

[:(]OK , thanks. That leads to a new question...Instead of "what does he want?" , the question now becomes "what do they want?" What exactly are "they" looking for? I know the moderator of that esteemed organization seems to be on a recruiting drive. But the rest? Damned if I can figure it out! [:(][&:]
